Course 1, Discussion 3: Avoiding Burnout

User Profile: Hope
Hope December 5th, 2022

7 Cups is founded on a community of passionate volunteers who lovingly dedicate their time to providing support.

You may face what is called burnout during your journey. You may have already faced this in your real life. Burnout is very real and must be recognized. You can't help fuel someone else when your tank is empty, after all!

I have completed 5+ steps of the recommended path, it has been incredibly helpful to read through these resources and spend a bit time reflecting on how I structure my volunteering time and how I might do this more effectively in future.

It has also reminded me of how important it is to reach out to the wider 7Cups community when in need of support.

I took 5 steps on the burnout prevention path and learned what burnout is, the causes of burnout, signs & symptoms of burnout, and tried an exercise related to burnout. My exercise was to write down how I can do a better job of communicating my needs. I think it's important for me to first spend some time with myself and understand & recognize my needs. Then, it's important for me to reach out to an appropriate leader and advocate for myself by verbalizing my needs.

I can't find anything on that link "preventing burnout on 7 cups":(

So I can't take 5 steps

I liked the slides and filled the form.  Haven't got my marks yet.

I would love to say that @hope is a very sensible leader here.

@Hope I loved the slides, they were so informative. The quiz was as always very enjoyable, i hope everyone benefits from it the way i did

@Hope

I have completed the  5 steps as I think this is a helpful way not only to address burnout/help others struggling with this issue, but handle different stresses in a similar way. Often times staying calm and taking a break to reevaluate things seems logical, yet is difficult to do when extremely stressed.

@Clairvoyantmercenary You make a really fantastic point about logic being difficult during times of stress, what do you think would make it easier?

Thank you for the kind remark! I guess situational awareness and reminding yourself what your priorities are in the moment. But, to not panic or freeze let say during a traumatic event requires years of practicing logical responses. Unless you have years or at least months of military/police/firefighting/martial arts training , the normal response to a traumatic event without proper experience unfortunately is to freeze or panic. For less stressful events that are not life threatening, I guess yoga and meditation can help.

@HopeI

’ve completed the following 5 steps on the burnout prevention path:

  • Set clear boundaries to avoid overcommitting.
  • Took regular self-care breaks to recharge.
  • Reduced my roles to focus on my most important commitments.
  • Reflected on my emotions and adjusted my workload.
  • Reached out for support when I felt overwhelmed.

@H4RIS

I read the same statements on my path. Reading these feel so simple but are really important to maintain in our daily routine
