Cheri’s Connection Corner - How Much Sleep vs Physical & Mental Reset

SunShineAlwaysGrateful August 17th, 2023

Sleep is a vital process for your body and mind to reset and heal.

On average, adults need around 7-9 hours of sleep each night to support overall well-being.

During sleep, your body undergoes essential processes such as tissue repair, memory consolidation, and hormone regulation, which contribute to your physical and mental health.

Prioritizing a consistent sleep schedule can have positive effects on your overall functioning and recovery.

How many hours do YOU need nightly to feel rested? What apps do you use to track your sleep? Do you reduce screen time prior to sleep 😴 💤 ??

i need 6.5 hours with at least one hour of deep sleep 💤 for me to feel rested. 💕

My day starts at 3am... I try to be in bed asleep by 8pm but its hard to do when the weather is nice out in the spring, summer, and fall. I can function with 5.5 to 6 hours, but if I have too many nights in a row of that I need a day with a nap in the afternoon. Anything less than 5 hours sleep I am miserable and unpleasant to be around and definately need to nap that day after work. For me to go a whole work week without a nap, I need 7 hours.

With that said, I suffer from migraines. I have tracked them for some time and know lack of sleep is a trigger so being in bed and asleep by 8pm is big for me.

I feel fine with 8 hours of sleep. If I get less, I feel more and more lacking sleep. If I get more, I feel more and more sluggish. I don't use a sleep app. I watch the news with blue light off on my phone until 30 minutes before I plan to be asleep.

I can function for several days with 7 hours of sleep. It wears on me though. Less than that and I'm tired all day.

@SunShineAlwaysGratefulWhat if "waking up" is the problem? What if you wake up each day and wonder why God is making you keep living?

Sometimes you realize that you have nothing left to offer the world and the world has nothing left to offer you. Maybe you're just existing and going through the motions hoping for some revelation of purpose and it never comes.

Then what?

@JerseyGrizzly

Sounds like this might be a very deep and personal question for you. One that perhaps might be better suited by talking with your local pastor or clergyman that can help give you more insight on a spiritual level that you desire.

Going to your local church to seek one might provide you better comfort and answers. And they are always welcoming to give support and spiritual guidance.

Also, contacting your healthcare provider who can guide you to a “mental health” provider can also help you in seeking even more support where needed.

And Remember we have listeners here at 7cups 24/7 that you can contact for one to one chat support anytime.

Good luck and best wishes on your journey.

I need 8 hours to feel rested and I used to not have sleep issues but something bad happened to my family and I and since then my sleep has been horrible. I use my Fitbit to track my sleep. I also reduce my screen time always, especially before bed.
