Increase in Depression During the holidays

Bree96 November 17th, 2016

Does anyone else feel like their depression gets worst through the holidays? What are some things that you feel help during these times?

Personally I play my music a whole lot more during the holidays and read.

Yeah. Everyone is so happy and cheerful, and it just makes you think of how you aren't. And then everyone posts pictures with their perfect families, and you're just left wondering why you don't have such a loving kind family.

A friend of mine is celebrating Thanksgiving as if it was just another Thursday.

The hardest thing for me is my expectations of what the holidays should be. As parents get older they are less supportive of holidays and for them it just seems like another day. Hope to bring some joy to someone this holiday.

For me being online is a help to be with people even if I am not feeling very social. I am going to try to participate in whatever is happening here at 7cups. Maybe with lowering my expectations, there will not be so much disappointment.

Oh well, think I will listen to a mindfulness video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p_yaNFSYao

Hope everyone has a happy Thursday! wink

Yes, yes, yes! I kno a holiday may not be a holiday, but man, do I dread it so freaking much! Yesterday was my "celebration" and I froze and couldn't blow out my candles. Wax dripped onto the cake and I ran off because I felt as if I was about to have a panick attack! I hated that moment and I knew it was going to happen. I've been wallowing all day, embarassed like no tomorrow.

Yes. it happens to me too, i started visiting my good friends, looking at good movies, take classes of something i love and also lay my music a lot,and that helped me much!

@Bree96 Yes because I feel incredibly lonely, and I'm jealous of people with close-knit families. My family is super awkward, dinners are sometimes almost silent, and I struggle with social anxiety at the dinners/parties, so I end up feeling really lonely.

Yes! Oh my God, I love the holidays but HATE my family constantly judging me. I usually do the big jigsaw puzzle we set out to bond with family by myself or read a good book. I also really enjoy taking a a relaxing bath before people show up. Another things is to put on some music that you REALLY like beforehand so it gets stuck in your head and you can sing it in your head when you get sad or stressed.

Only on Valentine's Day. I've been single during every Valentine's Day of my life on the 26 years I've lived on Earth. Each year it gets worse.

The week of Thanksgiving is my birthday week, two weeks after that is when my mother who had ALS passed away suddenly from a pulmonary embolism . Since 2002 when she died my year end holidays including my birthday have really sucked and I cry a lot because I miss her so very much. I have to try and gain gratitude of the things I am blessed with to realize my life has value and I am blessed with many things. Just not the one I often need the most. I love you and I miss you Mom.
