Show Your Love for Crochet this Valentine's Day by Learning to Make a 3D Crochet Heart!
It’s nearly Valentine’s, why not craft up this simple pattern you may love?
3D Crochet Heart
(Beginner/intermediate)
Materials:
Small crochet hook (3.5mm or less)
Stitch marker
Worsted weight (3) yarn in any colour
Fiberfill stuffing
Yarn needle
(As always, a bit of patience!)
Abbreviations: (US terminology)
st = stitch
sc= single crochet
inc = increase (2 sc into single stitch)
dec =invisible decrease (sc 2 stitches together)
sl st = slip stitch
[.]= total number of stitches in round
Working in continuous rounds with a yarn marker, mark the beginning of each round.
Upper Heart: (Make 2.)
Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring [6]
Rnd 2: inc in each stitch repeat around [12]
Rnd 3: *sc, inc in next st, repeat from * around [18]
Rnd 4: sc around. [18]
For the first upper heart section, cut a long yarn tail and pull the end through the final stitch
For the second upper heart section do not fasten off but continue working as follows in lower heart directions.
Lower Heart: (in this step we'll connect the two upper heart sections together)
Rnd 5: Connect the first upper heart section to the second with a sc. Place your stitch marker in this stitch as it will be the first stitch of the new round. SC in next 15 stitches. Skip the next 2 stitches remaining on the first upper heart section, skip 2 stitches on the second heart section before you continue to sc around. [32] (Yes this will leave a hole for the time being)
Rnd 6: sc around. [32]
Before proceeding with rounds, carefully secure your working end and use the long tail from the first upper heart section to sew the hole closed. Fasten off securely. Pick up your working end and resume working the remaining rounds.
Rnd 7: 6 sc, 2 dec, 12 sc, 2 dec, 6 sc. [28]
Rnd 8: 5 sc, 2 dec, 10 sc, 2 dec, 5 sc. [24]
Rnd 9: 4 sc, 2 dec, 8 sc, 2 dec, 4 sc. [20]
Begin stuffing the heart after round 9 and continue stuffing as needed after each round.
Rnd 10: 3 sc, 2 dec, 6 sc, 2 dec, 3 sc. [16]
Rnd 11: 2 sc, 2 dec, 4 sc, 2 dec, 2 sc. [12]
Rnd 12: 1 sc, 2 dec, 2 sc, 2 dec, 1 sc. [8]
Rnd 13: dec around [4] (This round is entirely optional - it will give a more “pointed’ bottom)
Fasten off leaving a long tail. Sew through the outer loop only of each of the final row of stitches, pull tight to close. Work in the end.

The way I internally squealed and immediately ran to my gallery to find the pics that I had clicked when I had made the hearts
It has rainbow heart too! (Not exactly rainbow but we are gonna see past it xD 🤭) And see past the fact that the rainbow one looks a little blurred as well!
Advanced Happy Valentines everyone! ❤️
(Or should we remove advanced since the valentines week is going on)
@tidyHickory3283
so are we gonna ignore the fact that the light pink hearts in your pic and my pic are 99.99% the same colour 😀
I would say that while it photographed like a baby pink, the pink heart I made is a more rose/medium pink. But I may make a baby pink one as well. I foresee a lot of yarn scraps turning into hearts in my house! 🩷
@EmotionsListener
true but sometimes camera is unable to capture the real colour. In real, my colour is kind of a dull blush pink but the camera made it a bit brighter i g
@tidyHickory3283
Thank you! I'm glad you were able to share your creations with us! I've noticed sometimes multi-coloured yarns don't photograph well, guess they create strange patterns for the camera. It's still great to see your work!
I actually have a few different patterns for hearts, one that even works from the bottom but I like the look and shape of this one best. So was your pattern similar or a different heart method?
As for Valentine's creations I may share more pictures of what goes with these little hearts soon. 😻
Thank you again for sharing your hearts!
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
@EmotionsListener
yeah I remember when I was clicking the photos, I tried hard for the colourful one to look clear as well but it didn’t. What happened with the pink hearts, opposite happened with the colourful one. The colourful one is a bright enhanced colour in real but in picture it’s showing a bit dull (and blurred)
@EmotionsListener
Hearts can be worked up from the bottom as well :0 can you please share the pattern? I would love to try it after my finals.
I made them with the similar pattern. It’s the same I think. Make 2 cups, work around, close the hole between the cups. Same same
I will be waiting for the lost! 😀
@tidyHickory3283
I'll have to type up the bottom first pattern, one thing I like about the bottom first is that the upper sections are made directly onto the piece/connected each other without the hole that you need to sew closed.
I'll try to get it written up sometime today or tomorrow!
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
@EmotionsListener
I will wait for the pattern. No hurry
I can’t crochet till March 12 anyways
@tidyHickory3283
Sorry for the delay, but here is the "bottoms up" heart pattern. 🫠
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Bottoms Up Heart: (Starting at the bottom of the heart)
Rnd 1: 4 sc in a magic ring [4]
Rnd 2: inc in each stitch repeat around [8]
Rnd 3: 1 sc, 2 inc, 2 sc, 2 inc, 1 sc [12]
Rnd 4: 2 sc, 2 inc, 4 sc, 2 inc, 2 sc [16]

Rnd 9: sc around [32]
*Working on one side of the upper heart.*
Rnd 10: chain 2, skip the first 16 stitches (this will connect the chain to the far side of the heart), sc around the remaining 16 stitches and into the 2 chains. [18]
Rnd 11: sc around. [18]
Rnd 12: *sc, dec, repeat from * around. [12]
Rnd 13: dec around [6]
Fasten off leaving a long tail. Sew through the outer loop only of each of the final row of stitches, pull tight to close. Work in the end.
*To complete the other side of the upper heart.*
Rnd 10(part 2): work a slip knot and attach new yarn to the heart using a slip stitch in the first unused chain of rnd 9. sc around the remaining 16 stitches and into the other side of the 2 chains made when separating. [18]
Rnd 11: sc around. [18]
It is now time to stuff your heart!
Rnd 12: *sc, dec, repeat from * around. [12]
Rnd 13: dec around [6]
Fasten off leaving a long tail. Sew through the outer loop only of each of the final row of stitches, pull tight to close. Work in the end.
@EmotionsListener
It's ok! I was busy with exams anyways and wasn't online
Thank you for the pattern! I will definitely try it out!
@EmotionsListener
i don’t celebrate valentine’s but thanks for sharing this crochet pattern/project 🥺 it’s so cute, and i’ll try to remember and make one or perhaps two of them tomorrow
I haven't crochet in a long while, but this is motivating to start again!
Thank you for sharing. ✨
If you are new to crochet, or just starting out, I thought this would be a great time to demonstrate the difference that yarn weight and hook sizes can make in your finished piece.
Below is a picture of 2 hearts made using the pattern above, both using the same number of rounds and stitches. The one on the left is made with a "bulky" weight yarn and a 4mm crochet hook, while the heart on the right is made with a worsted weight yarn and my 1.3mm crochet hook. (You may notice that these hooks are significantly smaller than the typical size hook recommended for each weight - that's one of the ways I get a denser crochet fabric without holes when making amigurumi.)
