Work Prompt #18: What have been your 3 most fulfilling work experiences?
Welcome back all, I hope you are all taking it easy on yourself at work this week.
Last week we discussed: Have you ever experienced burnout? Thank you to all who participated and shared their thoughts for discussion. I enjoyed them. I hope you all did too. If you didn't share yours, please share them here and I look forward to reading and discussing them with you.
This week's prompt: What have been your 3 most fulfilling work experiences?
@ASilentObserver it's all the small moments for me when I help someone find what they are looking for and I see them so happy. I am also very fulfilled by how our store is one of the few here that encourages human interactions to the max, has a no phone policy and has very pleasant staff who is making sure you got all you need. I'm extremely grateful especially when I look at an unnamed concurent store that is more popular then us but has horrible reviews, about how their staff is mean and can't be bothered to do basic customer service, or when I go to a store with mean assistents I always think back how happy our store makes me. Thanks to the inner workings of our store, we (probably unintentionally) provide people with a more oldschool shopping experience that is so rare nowadays.
For the last thing, I would like to use my smile spreader card despite it not being a job. I love making people happy and design the graphics. There is nothing better then making the post and bringing joy to both the appreciated peer and the appreciator 😊
@sadcat13 I am glad you have found a lot of fulfillment in your work helping others and creating a positive environment at your store. Those moments where you bring happiness to others must be rewarding. How do you feel when you think about the contrast between your store and the other one? Thank you for sharing with us, Cat. @ASilentObserver well. I'm happy we are providing such a good experience, but a bit sad that they are more popular despite how mean their employees are and almost noone knows about us
But a lot of people who come to us tell us we are better and they will come the next time too so very grateful for that
Popularity can be spread by word-of-mouth. So, hopefully your happy customers will spread the word to those they know. If you have regular customers, maybe you could ask them to leave good reviews for the store as a whole. The more customers know about your store, the more it promotes it to the people who are going to other stores with bad customer service. Don't know if it's doable, just a thought.

@Jaeteuk yes we are doing the best we can, and are slowly building a stable base of customers, but it is a bit slower then we would like

As much as how I tell myself that my work does not require other people to acknowledge my efforts, but it does give me a sense of fulfillment when it is recognized. When I work, I feel my principles is to be considerate of other people's (doctors and nurses) work and conveniences. I don't just do the work/task just because it's my job, but I do it in a way, where it is more easily accessed for them, to make "their" job more easier. I find my colleagues, they only do the work because it is their job to do so. Not entirely thinking in their shoes, as to what we can do to help them more easily execute their procedures. Certain tasks at work also fulfills my OCD of being neat and tidy. But it's a bit contradicting. I'm only like that at work, but my working desk at home, I have papers everywhere. But at the same time, I know where everything is when I need it. So, it's like an organized mess.

@Jaeteuk Good to see you Jae and thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. It sounds like you have found some aspects of your work to be fulfilling, such as feeling like you are able to ease others' workload and finding structure in certain tasks. However, you have also noticed differences in how others approach their responsibilities.
Yes.. Sometimes I get the feeling that I'm the only one who actually cares about how our work will impact those using the things we prepare for them.. I try to make my work more meaningful. Here are my thoughts: The tasks I do is to help nurses and Anesthesia doctors do their work more smoothly, which in turn, is like I'm doing it for the patient care that nurses and doctors provide. Whether that be helping the patient ease pain, fix a broken bone, or remove cancer.. My work is like the basic grounds of allowing nurses, anesthesia doctors and surgeons do their procedures with proper supplies and equipment.
That is why I like my job, because in a way, I'm also helping the patient become healthier, even when my work is not seen by them, nor are they up front, almost like behind the scenes. But, without my part, the process of providing patient care will not be doable.
From what I see amongst all the colleagues I've worked with, it seems that they are all just doing the work because it is listed as their tasks. That they are only doing what they are told to do within the job description, and that they chose this type of job because it pays decent. Working as a healthcare and being in a Union, once you have a permanent part-time or full-time position, you're set for a good chunk of money as pension when you retire after at least 25 years of full-time service. I'm pretty sure though, if I ask my colleagues if they actually like the work, like have passion for it, I think they will just say that they chose this job because of the pay, and unlike becoming a nurse, it's lesser years of studying as well, all you need is to complete a Certificate Program. Where the prerequisite for the Program is only graduating from High School.
But it gets tiring sometimes, when I feel I'm the only one that cares and is always thinking ahead. When the others don't have the same trail of thought as I, it will look like I'm doing more things. So to them, it may seem like I'm trying to brag about my efficiency and make them look like slackers. Maybe that's why, some of them don't like me, because I seem to work harder than they do.

I think sometimes people need to find fulfillment in a job well done and small things then being upset if if supervisors or staff does not remember to give you feedback. In my current position i am new but have had a good record of follow-thru and keeping things on time.

@Enthenia I am sorry to hear you are feeling like you have not had many fulfilling work experiences. Would you share more about what makes a moment feel fulfilling to you?
@ASilentObserver I would think a sense of fulfillment would come with a sense of belonging. Where one didn't feel like one was there to just fill a role or to take up space.
