In recovery, whether it's mental illness or substance abuse, it's important to have a phrase or affirmation to help you get through an urge or a symptom.

Three things I tell myself:

  1. Ride the wave
  2. No excuses
  3. It'll pass

What are some affirmations/phrases you use to help yourself?

Yeah man, that's some tough stuff to deal with. I suffer with mild bipolar and I've had some pretty psychotic episodes in my life but but I don't think I have the extreme mental version that's out of control or bipolar. I can only imagine how hard that is to deal with. I can feel your frustration and I really hate that you're going through that.

I think @trueconfidant123 was asking, "what do we tell ourselves?" He tells himself that you do not have to tell yourself that.

35 years ago, but things have been going on years before this, there were three things I told myself that saved my life i think. I already listed them in the comments down below but I didn't have no story behind it so I wanna share it with you.

35 years ago I was so manic that I couldn't even function on my own. I would just go crazy getting wound up on things all these big ideas and oh just crazy stuff. And in my Low's, I would be in depressions for months or several weeks anyway.

I came up with the idea that my life was worthless anyway so why not just act like a robot and do what logic told me that were safe things to do. And I did these things faithfully for about five years and then things started to take their own shape again. I still suffer from bipolar episodes but they're not as crippling and it's not as bad as they had been in the past.

These are the three things I told myself.

DO Every other 1-2 days... Do these in repeating order.

Stay clean. (my person, my living area)..... During my depressions I lived like a slob and lived in a pig- sty.
Rest without guilt...... During my depressions, I couldn't move or do thngs making me more feel super inadaquate and guilty getting more depressed.
Stay generous or charitable by visiting or calling someone...... During my high's, my psychotic way of giving thanks was thinking I could make other people feel good if I visited them and it got me out of the house.

These are my three things, those others we're his things. Maybe none of these resonate with you or can help you along but maybe if other people share what the three things they do, it could help maybe open some doors or ideas.

Are there three things in your own story that you can tell yourself to make things feel better for a moment or longer?

It is really hard to find three positive things when we are suffering so much and there is no easy way out. Mental illness is not a weakness. It's a challenge and there's no promise of a positive outcome but there's the possibility of one.

It's ok for @trueconfident123 to believe, "everything has a reason." we don't have to accept that, but it helps him so no need to change his mind.

In great frustration we scream ---WHYYYY!!!!!!!!! at the top of our lungs and nothing seems to make any sense or have any reason at all! I'm with you on that, I agree.
