Warriors! Weekly Check-in
Depression Support / by BlueButterfly4
Last post
June 30th, 2017
...See more Happy Wednesday! Today I give everyone some warrior strength. Use it as needed, to heal, rest, recuperate, say "NO!" when asked to do something, whatever.:-) Today's Topic: Weird Sports! ● Pig racing. Yep. People race *pigs*. Also frogs, roaches, inchworms (?! slowest race ever), tortoises, dogs and horses, and cows. There's also rubber duck races. If you're that bored, then hey, come clean a fibro patient's house:-) ... ● People also compete to see who can carry the most coal on their backs. ● Fireball anyone? You set fire to a soccer ball. And play soccer with it. Pity the goalie, is all I'm sayin'. ● Olympic Tug-of-War. No joke, it was once in the Olympics. From 1900 to 1920, and the UK walked away with five of the available medals in the sport in those times. (Two gold, thus beating out the US and Sweden, which each had one gold in the tug of war events.) If you know math, you know that's not possible... Except that countries could enter more than one "club" (team). Ah-ha! Some people want it to come back just for the fun of it. Gotta say, beats watching archery, if there's mud in the middle... But that's Redneck Olympics. ●Volcano surfing. You surf down a hill of volcanic ash. Presumably, you don't like to get wet. Also, you can "surf" on sand dunes in deserts. Or, y'know, take a nice walk... ●Tazer ball. You taze your opponent to gain possession of the ball. Who wins? The paramedics. I dunno. Takes the childhood game "Hot potato" to new levels. ●So too does "Flaming Tar Barrel Racing". There are two variations. You can carry a barrel full of tar, with the tar on fire, and if you make it to the finish alive and uncharred, you win. Or, you can carry an empty barrel coated in tar, and the tar is set on fire, because that's gonna hurt more. ●Unless it's the "stinging nettle challenge". You don't grab stinging nettle. You hold it in your mouth. To be "extreme". Did I mention that if you're that bored, you can come clean our houses? ●And to round it off? Naked rugby. They play the south island of New Zealand, international matches. Now, rugby is civilized US football, without helmets or pads but also less injuries and more obscure formations. (Sorry, rugby escapes me. I've tried.) Anyway, rugby... naked. This, I suspect, is more about mental strength than physical. May you giggle at least once picturing something I mentioned.

"All or Nothing" Thinking
Depression Support / by BlueButterfly4
Last post

...See more Have you ever said to yourself, "I am completely ruined."? What about, "Nothing good ever happens to me."? Maybe you've even said, "People always let you down."? All-or-nothing thinking can manifest in all sorts of circumstances. People use it to measure their worth as a person, and to make sense of their experiences and the world around them. ◇All or Nothing thinking is found in depressed people all over the World. This is because it is part of the most primitive of human responses: The Fight or Flight Response. ◇When faced with a life-threatening situation, we must make a snap decision and act on it. There is no time for 'maybe this', or 'maybe that. So how do we stop the Ants? (ALL or NOTHING THINKING): First, Spot the Ant words. ● Always ● Never ● Impossible ● Awful ● Disastrous ● Terrible ● Furious ● Ruined ● Perfect Second, separate self-worth from performance. Focus on qualities that are more firmly rooted within. For instance, focus on how youre compassionate and honest, have empathy for others and value your family. Third, use the word "and" instead of "or". ☆ Instead of I had a great week or a terrible week, consider, I had some wonderful things happen this week and some things that were difficult. ☆ Using the word and helps us become less judgmental and more understanding of both ourselves and others. Lastly, focus on all of your positive qualities. ▪ Every night before bed, write down one to three things you did that day. Then write down the positive quality those actions reveal. For instance, you might write: I went to work. This shows youre hardworking and dedicated to your job. ▪The beauty of expanding all-or-nothing thinking is that you dont have to be perfect. You dont have to do something 100 percent of the time. When you think this way, you feel much better about yourself, and you become more energized and motivated.

Myths about Depression

June 23rd, 2017
...See more Hey everyone! Hope you're all doing well and having a good week so far. Today's topic will be about the myths of depression that have been around for years. If you have heard of any other myths I might have missed, I encourage you to share them with us! :) Myth: It's not a real illness. ● Depression is a serious medical condition -- and the top cause of disability in American adults. But it's still confused with ordinary sadness. Myth: Children don't experience mental health problems ● Fact: Even very young children may show early warning signs of mental health concerns. Myth: Antidepressants will change your personality ● Antidepressants are designed to change only certain chemicals in your brain. Myth: Depression only affects mood Depression can be emotional, physical, and cognitive symptoms. Myth: Depression is purely a psychological illness Although the exact cause is unknown, depression is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Myth: Depression stems from a bad childhood Childhood trauma and bad life situations do affect depression in later life in very negative ways, however, there are many other factors that can influence depression. Myth: Depression means violence A mental health disorder does not mean that someone is going to commit a violent act. In fact, a 2014 study found that people with mental health issues are more likely to be victims of violent crimes [https://news.ncsu.edu/2014/02/wms-desmarais-violence2014/] than the ones committing them.

Summer Depression
Depression Support / by BlueButterfly4
Last post
June 20th, 2017
...See more Hello all! Hoping you are all having a good day! Today we are going to be going over the seasonal depression for summertime. If you're not in the U.S. you can relate to this to when it's summer for you. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons. With winter depression, there is at least the small comfort that everyone else is hunkered down in their apartments watching Netflix, too. Summer depression, on the other hand, can feel isolating, like youre missing out on some big party. Theyre hiding in their dark rooms, and they feel like theyre not part of this great pageant thats going on outdoors, in the swimming pools and going for hikes. Did you know the highest number of suicides rates are in the summer? Most would say it was winter. Here's why: First, the increased socializing and contact with that many people do during the holidays may actually keep those suicidal thoughts at bay. The support of family and friends is one thing that keeps people from utter despair. Second, there are plenty of distractions. Some suggest that sunshine triggers suicidal thoughts [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11805594], making self-harm more common in months with longer days. Temperature is also a suspect. Doctors point out that allergens trigger the release of anxiety-producing chemicals [http://www.psy.cmu.edu/~scohen/deverts_cynical_hostility_2010.pdf], and studies have linked the pollen count [http://www.frontiersin.org/publications/21143241] to the number of people killing themselves. If you are someone that does not like heat, sweat, sunlight, or have self-esteem issues or social issues, you might the summer part of SAD. Please be aware of SAD, and if you feel as if you or someone else might have this, know that it CAN be treated. Everyone please stay safe and comfortable this summer.

Blue was my first listener on here, and im so glad she was. She is so sweet and patient. I was so depressed, wouldnt get out of bed, brush my hair, or do anything. Now that I met Blue and got a chance to talk to her about my problems, ive felt so much better. Its like she flicked a light switch in me that i couldnt turn on myself.
