Keep fit mentally

amiablePeace77 September 4th

Most people have some sort of fear about ageing and memory loss is a very common one.

Though everyone occasionally experiences brain fog, certain factors - such as stress, ageing, lack of sleep, or an unhealthy lifestyle - can make it more severe.

Exercising your brain can improve mental agility and strengthen its ability to focus and withstand stress. There are many ways to exercise your brain such as engaging in meaningful discussions with others, reading with taking notes, sudoku, and crossword puzzles.

Seeking Help

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

Being able to talk to people in a different language can be very useful! I heard that learning a new language has also several brain benefits. May I ask if your bf is a native speaker?

I mixi up names and forget what I was saying. I open one cupboard instead of the fridge. For the time being, it's often amusing. My grandson faithfully answers no matter if I call him by my dog's name or his uncle's just like the rest of the family adapts to the new me.

Getting old is a privilege. I am entitled to forgetting. Some people are thankful I do...

I really don't do anything extra or special to work my brain as I age other than my normal everyday work and tasks...I do read regularly......I used to do crosswords....this thread has me thinking I should go back to doing something along those lines.....

"Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems"

My question here is.....does the mental stress cause the excessive rumination and worries or does the excessive rumination and worries cause the mental stress?  Or maybe a little of both....I suffer from excessive rumination....was once told it was normal because I am a "critical thinker" and it was a good thing to a point.....but I feel like I'm way past that "critical thinking" point.....I feel that if I learned to control my excessive rumination, my mental stress would decrease tremendously....

@CyclingThroughLife

Being a critical thinker can have many benefits but as everything it needs to be balanced. So sorry that you're suffering from excessive rumination, it must be draining and make it hard to get through the day at time.  Our minds need rest to recharge. Here are 2 video options that I find helpful to calm:

What activities are you currently doing to protect your brain health and keep your mind sharp?

I learn new skills and knowledge and allow myself new beneficial experiences. By that I mean good ones, not bad ones like experiencing robbing or mugging someone. Along with learning, I also practice every skill I know and have learned to keep my brain/mind sharp. I also use my brain to be creative, to plan stuff, to write lyrics to my own songs, to come up with ideas, to create something, or anything else that involves creativity to keep myself as mentally sharp as possible too. I don’t worry about memory loss bc I find that I have good memory to the point where people are amazed by what I’ve remembered and think of me as a human encyclopedia bc of it lol.
