Ageism -"I Can't Get No Respect"   https://text.npr.org/nx-s1-5234649

Ageism — discrimination and prejudice based on someone's age — is so ingrained in society that most of us don't notice it. Yet "we all face the consequences, and we all have a role in fixing it.

Experts say that fighting ageism isn't only important to create an equitable and fair society, it also helps all of us live longer, healthier — even more fulfilling — lives.

Yale professor Becca Levy studies the psychology of aging. Her research found that people who had positive beliefs about aging bounced back more effectively from illnesses and other setbacks than those who had negative perceptions about what it meant to be older.

Participation questions:

  1. What kind of situations do you worry about your age and fitting into the group of people you're with?

  2. How do you respond when people make comments about your age?

If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

  1. What kind of situations do you worry about your age and fitting into the group of people you're with?

I worry when I am among people younger than me because sometimes they are intimidated by me being older and may be judging or preaching to them.

  2. How do you respond when people make comments about your age?

Some people can not believe I am going to be 60 because I do not look my age. To those who make a comment rudely I just imply with you tell me how you feel when your my age

@pamharley003

I hear you about the risk of preaching to younger people. Often older people want to protect the younger ones and let them know what not to do or where it could lead to (feeling guilty for this too). It's better to wait that they actually ask for our opinion and also to understand that they have the right to make their own mistakes.

We should ensure that people who discriminate based on age never get to experience it themselves. 😜💨

  1. What kind of situations do you worry about your age and fitting into the group of people you're with?

I worry of those older than me may disregard what I want to learn, and I worry of those younger than me disregard what I’ve learned.

  2. How do you respond when people make comments about your age?

I try to be mindful that we come from very different segments in our lives. It wasn’t that long ago black-and-white TV was a regular household luxury, now we all have small touchscreen computers that fit in pockets.

There’s not much response I have. Fake a laugh, say I understand, and try to move on from that sentiment. I try not to respond back because times before I’ve been told I sound intimidating. 💔

What kind of situations do you worry about your age and fitting into the group of people you're with?

At 72 and since last year, I feel physically tired and frail. The doctor and I are looking into asthenia. My age is otherwise often an advantage and there is no regret of things I used to do and cannot any longer. This age is even surprising considering the long cancer treatment 10 years ago. My groups are either very young people (teenagers and young immigrants) or folks around my age (choir). When I was looking for a dog to adopt, I faced ageism from the local rescue place, but frankly, they were right! I can't handle a dog that would be too big and excitable.

How do you respond when people make comments about your age?

It depends what they say. Mostly they are respectful or too young to realize that what they just said was awkward. I do not like the tropes about being XX years "young", or being "young at heart". Those seem to have been invented by people who were not old.... yet.

  1. What kind of situations do you worry about your age and fitting into the group of people you're with?

There’s so much worryness or fear, some of it might be warranted, some of it is unnecessarily overdone, that I actually try my best and hardest NOT to worry about things like this. I worried about this all the time throughout my 12 grades of school as as all kids and teens understandably did/do. But after those 12 years, I stopped and saw that as a sign of not only being or progressing into adulthood but also a sign of maturity.

  2. How do you respond when people make comments about your age?

I tell them with age comes wisdom, experience, knowledge that you being younger don’t yet have. Which is true by the way.

Thank you!

While I agree that too much worrying wastes energy, I also believe it’s a normal part of being a human being and living. We all worry about certain things at certain times in our lives.

Some people over worry but while that’s wasting their energy, it is their way of showing they care about someone or something.

I dont know if this post is relevant here and does not answer the questions but I saw the topic discussion and felt to reply because I seem to see the theme of age often mentioned along wth peoples negativity and worries.

Here there are people I have listened to or even read about in the media who seem to have been very negatively affected by ageism and by negative ideas of getting older. Many people seem to feel under pressure to do everything before the age of 30.  One rather sad example of this is here: https://www.agegracefullyamerica.com/getting-past-ageism/

Unfortunately, this highlights the fact that ageism can lead to people giving up their lives quite early, which can be quite literal.  Otherwise it causes emotional problems, shame and lack of self acceptance and people feeling they cant do certain things.

Unfortunately it seems that some people are worrying about age before they reach their thirties- there are those already thinking they are too old to get married and have families, or have some kind of success.

Most of the ideas surrounding age, I believe, are quite out of date.  Nowadays people are living a lot longer than previous generations (so someone at 40 might live another 60 years or more) but it seems that ideas have remained the same and not been updated for people in the modern world.   https://ourworldindata.org/life-expectancy

For these reasons I think it is very helpful for older people to share  their more positive experiences and expectations as well as how they have dealt with or are currently deal with things that do happen. I think it is helpful for younger people to hear about older people living their lives, having good health and getting married or changing and having careers because it can inspire people and helps to get rid of ideas that such things have a deadline and things are "too late" and everything they have will be eroded or disappear with time.

It would be nice to hear about older people looking forward to things in the future - which could be years, days, or decades.  This might help us all feel more positive about a brighter future in older age and also show people that many people are still very capable and able to live and do most things that others do. It is nice to remember the past - the good parts- but also to look to what could be in the future. It might help others not to fear getting older so much.  I wonder if there are older people who feel hopeful for the future - what hopes and dreams might they still have?

In reality, every age has its own value and merits and of course, not all people are the same and people get older differently. I have heard that there are people who become more beautiful as they get older, and some people have better health (they know how to take better care).  I have heard about women being unsuccessful at marriage and families in their twenties and thirties but having a child in their late forties or even fifties.  Such women are often called “geriatric mothers,” which reflects the negative perspective towards people continuing their lives and doing things when society thinks they should stop. However, I think it only demonstrates that a person's own biological clock is personal to them and does not coincide with the opinions of society. Old age is often slapped onto people far too soon.

I feel many of us - of all different ages - are affected by these negative ideas of age and they among the things that prevent us from getting on with life and living the best we can. It also contributes to depression, worry, and general negativity.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. I really appreciate your detailed response to the thread and the links given. Something you mentioned stood out to me and that is

"I wonder if there are older people who feel hopeful for the future - what hopes and dreams might they still have?"

In many societies Old Age means the end, there is nothing to hope for, nothing will change, it's just a waiting period. However, in my opinion this is not true and we as societies should stop seeing old age as such and encourage and help old people to feel active (in whatever way) and as a valuable part of the community.

Thank you for reply. Yes and I agree with you on that and I guess what I meant was that people should still have a hope of a good future whatever age. Some one could be ninety but still have hope of another ten years or so and for achieving something in those years, or it could even be days or months, I guess some ideas could be visiting a place they have not seen, picking up a hobby they left off, writing a book, or catching up with relatives or friends they could not do before.  Obviously this is according to personal choice and abilities.  It would be nice to involve older people in society more - if they want that and are able.  I think the current options are limited especially for healthy people agingwell.  Also to still have the opportunities to do things according to their own abilities if they choose that.
