Ageism -"I Can't Get No Respect"
Ageism -"I Can't Get No Respect" https://text.npr.org/nx-s1-5234649
Ageism — discrimination and prejudice based on someone's age — is so ingrained in society that most of us don't notice it. Yet "we all face the consequences, and we all have a role in fixing it.
Experts say that fighting ageism isn't only important to create an equitable and fair society, it also helps all of us live longer, healthier — even more fulfilling — lives.
Yale professor Becca Levy studies the psychology of aging. Her research found that people who had positive beliefs about aging bounced back more effectively from illnesses and other setbacks than those who had negative perceptions about what it meant to be older.

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

What kind of situations do you worry about your age and fitting into the group of people you're with?
I worry when I am among people younger than me because sometimes they are intimidated by me being older and may be judging or preaching to them.
How do you respond when people make comments about your age?
Some people can not believe I am going to be 60 because I do not look my age. To those who make a comment rudely I just imply with you tell me how you feel when your my age
@pamharley003
I hear you about the risk of preaching to younger people. Often older people want to protect the younger ones and let them know what not to do or where it could lead to (feeling guilty for this too). It's better to wait that they actually ask for our opinion and also to understand that they have the right to make their own mistakes.
We should ensure that people who discriminate based on age never get to experience it themselves. 😜💨
What kind of situations do you worry about your age and fitting into the group of people you're with?
I worry of those older than me may disregard what I want to learn, and I worry of those younger than me disregard what I’ve learned.
How do you respond when people make comments about your age?
I try to be mindful that we come from very different segments in our lives. It wasn’t that long ago black-and-white TV was a regular household luxury, now we all have small touchscreen computers that fit in pockets.
There’s not much response I have. Fake a laugh, say I understand, and try to move on from that sentiment. I try not to respond back because times before I’ve been told I sound intimidating. 💔

What kind of situations do you worry about your age and fitting into the group of people you're with?
At 72 and since last year, I feel physically tired and frail. The doctor and I are looking into asthenia. My age is otherwise often an advantage and there is no regret of things I used to do and cannot any longer. This age is even surprising considering the long cancer treatment 10 years ago. My groups are either very young people (teenagers and young immigrants) or folks around my age (choir). When I was looking for a dog to adopt, I faced ageism from the local rescue place, but frankly, they were right! I can't handle a dog that would be too big and excitable.
How do you respond when people make comments about your age?
It depends what they say. Mostly they are respectful or too young to realize that what they just said was awkward. I do not like the tropes about being XX years "young", or being "young at heart". Those seem to have been invented by people who were not old.... yet.
