An enhanced editor

RarelyCharlie January 9th, 2019

Here are instructions for enhancing the editor we use in forums and feeds: How to: Enhance the editor

This was announced before, but I'm repeating it here because it came up again in connection with creating tables in forum posts.

At present this solution is experimental, and I know some things don't work. Please use this thread or PM me to report issues, even though I can't guarantee I'll be able to fix them all.

Version 0.18, available here as usual, makes a couple of minor changes.

I noticed a while ago that a link containing an equals sign wasn't being converted correctly, so this morning I fixed that.

A URL like this should now be linkified correctly: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=linkify

While I was there, I added a face with medical mask to the emoji Medical mask

What happened to version 0.17? Sorry, I have no idea.

Version 0.19, available here as usual, fixes the title in replies. (This was a regression caused by 7 Cups changing the way the title is coded.)

And it fixes a bug that omitted anything following a # from being included in links.

Users of the enhanced editor will have noticed that some things stopped working recently. I didn't change anything. 7 Cups suddenly banned some formatting.

As far as I know there was no announcement about the ban, and no explanation of why it was needed.

Sadly, 7 Cups has continued breaking things in the forum, and now the enhanced editor doesn't work at all 😬

As far as I can tell, it should be possible to fix it. I'm going to try over the next few days, and I'll report back here when I have some results.

@RarelyCharlie thank you!

@RarelyCharlie

Thank you very much, Charlie!!

That took longer than I had hoped, but now I've published a new version that seems to work. This is version 2.0. As usual, you can upgrade here.

Editing an existing post might not work! I am not able to test it myself, so could someone try it and let me know what happens? There's a test thread here: Test—please ignore

I was able to find workarounds for the borders that 7 Cups disabled in May, so that block quotes and the signature appear as intended again. Some other formatting features are still blocked by 7 Cups.

Subscriptions don't work yet. You have to click the thread's Subscribe or Unsubscribe button yourself. I plan to fix that next.

@RarelyCharlie

Thanks so much Charlie! 💜

I checked forum editing in the test thread and confirmed that it does not currently work. Making any edit to an existing post seems to always trip the censor when trying to save the post. (I see that you also created a meaningful error message for that behavior. 😊)

A new version, 2.1, is now available in the usual place: here

I am grateful for valuable help from @QuietMagic who helped me to hack the code for editing an existing post. I hope I've got it right this time. I also added the selection thing for choosing a reason for editing.

The subscription button should now work in existing threads. I've just noticed there's a problem when creating a new thread, which I'll fix very quickly.

Version 2.2 fixes the bug I just caused in new threads, I hope Grimacing More to come soon…

@RarelyCharlie

Thanks, Charlie. I tested a few different scenarios with the subscription checkbox and it seems to be working for all of them.

I tested post editing and it isn't working.

Version 3.01 supports image uploads (in a basic way), and has a few other tweaks.

Image uploads means—you have an image you made yourself or you downloaded from somewhere, so it's stored on your device. Previously you'd have to put it on Imgur or somewhere like that before you can use it in 7 Cups. Now the editor does that for you. Choose the file and the editor puts it on Imgur for you, then it puts the Imgur copy in the post you're editing.

It looks like 7 Cups maybe plans to provide this in the official editor too, possibly using Amazon Cloudfront instead of Imgur.

Resizing an image still doesn't work (because 7 Cups currently blocks it, weirdly), but there might be a way to make it work, I'm not sure.

If you see an image here, it was uploaded from my computer by the editor:

Version 3.03 makes indented paragraphs work…

…but only to two levels…

…as 7 Cups doesn't seem to allow more.

It also displays an error message when an image upload to Imgur fails.

(Version 3.02 existed only briefly. Its Outdent button didn't work.)

@RarelyCharlie

Thank you!

RarelyCharlie OP September 25th, 2021

Oh no, the indenting isn't visible on mobile devices? 😬 This is all so frustrating!

@RarelyCharlie

I hope you can figure it out (and the site lets you figure it out 😛) 😊 thanks for all the hardwork!

In version 3.04 click on an image to resize it. Either drag the bottom-right corner of the image, or choose a preset size: 100%, 50% or 25% of the post width.
