Self-Harm Recovery Daily Check-In: Tuesday June 9th, 2020
Hey everyone
I hope youre all having a great day :) and if not, I hope youre hanging in there! Maybe this week started off a bit rough, but I hope you manage to fit some self-care in today!
On that note, today I wanted to talk a bit about self-care and what it really is! Self-care is not forcing ourselves to be in a good mood, or making an instant recovery, it is a journey. It takes time and effort. One step at a time, you got this!
Do something that you enjoy, treat yourself!
Draw, watch a movie, talk to a friend, dance to some music, take an impromptu nap, or how about a long bath with some bubbles? Pick up that book youve been putting off, smile at your pet, cook some pasta, take a nice walk, go explore! Or eat that second cupcake (dont worry, I wont snitch )

- to get out of quarantine to spend my birthday with my friends. I can't change it though
- for the school year to end
- to be able to see everyone I missed during lockdown

self care is doing things for yourself that make you happy. Like reading, listening to music, getting some extra sleep, etc.

I love to read and listen to music everyday

I know quarantine has been tough on pretty much all of us. It's upsetting not being able to see people you're used to seeing every day, big, big change! I also wish for the school year to end. How has online school been for you? I'm so sorry you don't get to celebrate your birthday with your friends I wish you a happy birthday, regardless!
I agree that self-care is doing things for yourself that can improve your mood! Reading, getting more sleep, and music are all great ideas. Also, reading and music are the best combo

Reading and Music definitely are the best
You definitely should try some vegan icecream. There is literally any flavor you can think of. My favorites are mocha chocolate cookie, cookie dough, and Caramel cluster.

Lonely, hopeful, distressed, frustrated, annoyed.
2. Tell me three things that you wish you could change in your life right now. Is there a way that you could make these changes?
There are many things that I would change about my life. First would be the way people see me, and their assumptions. I would also wish that I had someone to lean on when I need a shoulder to cry on. The final thing would just to fit into societies expectations for girls my age.
3. Youre trying to explain self-care to someone who has never heard of it before. How do you explain it?
Self care is makign sure that you are taking care of your physical and mental health. You are being aware of your needs and you are trying your best to fulfill them.
4. What is your favourite self-care activity that you practice on a daily basis?
I work out constantly. I make sure that I am in shape.
5. Frozen yogurt or ice cream?
Ice cream. I love all the toppings!

The way people see us can definitely have an impact, I hear you! And assumptions can be so destructive. Needing someone to lean on, and to be there for you is normal and I understand where you're coming from. I hope you manage to find someone who can support you and love you unconditionally. Societal expectations can cause so much distress and anxiety, or just plain old disappointment. Wanting to fit into those expectations makes sense. It can be a real struggle to feel like you aren't right or that you don't belong.
I love your definition of self-care! You said it better than I ever could self-care definitely includes physical and mental health. And I like the part about being aware of our needs and doing our best to fulfill them. It highlights how necessary self-care really is
Working out is great for physical and mental health. I hope you know your limits! (ps: I wouldn't mind a few workout tips!)

Exhausted, frustrated, driven, stressed, lost

a. I wish I could mend the relationships that were ruined by my self-harm addiction.
b. I wish I could feel more positive emotions.
c. I wish I could express myself in words that other people understand.
I'm not sure at this point if there is a way for me to make these changes. I'm still mulling it over in my mind and testing things.

Taking responsibility for all areas of your life, especially the most basic needs of food, water, shelter, exercise, clothing, and sleep.

Self-harm is a really difficult thing to deal with, I hear you. It's a long journey to recovery, I wish you the best! I'm sorry to hear about the relationships that this addiction has affected. Self-harm can be so tough on us, but also those that we love and who love us.
I understand wanting to feel more positive emotions! Sometimes our brains are being meanies, and don't allow that to happen. Sometimes we just have to go an extra step, work twice as hard. And that can be exhausting. Communicating clearly is also something I struggle with, so I can relate! It's so frustrating and disappointing when your thoughts and words come out wrong.
I'm glad you're trying things out, and becoming more aware of it. Sounds like you're making progress!
I love that you put "taking responsibility". It is definitely a responsibility we have, and not a choice! We need to take care of ourselves, and that does, indeed, start with our basic needs such as food, clothing, sleep, etc.
Exercising is great! A workout for the body, a workout for the mind
I've never heard of chocolate flavoured banana nice cream. It sounds cool! I'll need to check that out.

Have a better self image, it's an on going process, it's already better than some months ago
Have a cat, my aunt, who I live with, is allergic to them so I'll have to wait
Lose some weight, also something that's been set in motion but always feels like it goes too slowly

Any action that contributes to your overall health, mental, physical and emotional. These actions can be big or small.

Going for a bike ride

2. Tell me three things that you wish you could change in your life right now. Is there a way that you could make these changes? Oh three things, that's a lot for me. I wish that my daily routine wouldn't be so tiring, that people would be more interested in me and that the world would be a better place. I could probably do something about my day to day life but honestly I don't have the energy today. I know I can't change other people to how I see fit, so if they don't like me, well that's that. And making the world a better place ? I do what I can to help others.
3. Youre trying to explain self-care to someone who has never heard of it before. How do you explain it? You know all those little intentions that you have for others ? Well it's directing those thoughtful actions to yourself.
4. What is your favourite self-care activity that you practice on a daily basis? Shower time is my favorite time of the day. It's the only consistent self-care activity that I have.
5. Frozen yogurt or ice cream? Ice cream !! Preferably fruity flavours or chocolate :)

Daily routines can take a toll and be tiring, I hear you! It sucks when we feel that people aren't interested in us. I hope you manage to form healthy two-sided relationships and be yourself. Love that you put "so if they don't like me, well that's that" that's an awesome mindset! I understand wanting the world to be a better place! There are so many awful things happening, it can be so overwhelming and disappointing. That's a very selfless thought

Thanks for thinking that I'm interesting ! I would say that I'm creative in my own way (just like everybody else). At the moment I'm into hand lettering and calligraphy. I like to doodle and stuff like that. I also enjoy writing (mostly my own thoughts) and dancing. I'm working on something for my brother's birthday and random doodles based on music I'm listening to.

Further my education, be forgotten, can't do much now or shouldn't.

It can be anything from just keeping a routine or don't anything small or simple that you like or will distract you and of course something big as well.

I normally make myself eat and or some tv or interneting. I don't have anything else anymore now.

@RiverHudson1 Thank you. Those feelings are very normal for me. I'm used to it. I think to be forgotten is one of the more difficult things we can do. Just going about our lives we bump into others and leve a sticky residue that can only be removed by time. And once it is gone then we are finally forgotten.
@Flornhope I hear you we impact each other whether intentionally or unintentionally, whether we like it or not. And we can't take it back. Being forgotten would be the easy path to take, to assume no responsibility, but it is such a difficult to do. As you said, only time can accomplish that. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
@RiverHudson1 I guess it comes down to what it means for the individual. For me it would be to fulfill all obligations, not start any now ones, give or take. Don't have any sort of connection to anyone. Live in a way so no one notices you. Down to not using the same cashier in two weeks. Not having clothes, vehicle or hair ect. that stand out. Don't have conversations or the bare minimum to get by at work and such. Have as close to nothing to do with everyone that you possibly can.

Sleep - Im really nowhere near getting enough of it and I wish I had a way to make it change but bleh, Ive really tried a lot of things and nothing seems to make it better or it does for a bit and then just goes back to being crappy…
Doubting – I wish I wasnt questioning myself so much, questioning what Im doing/not doing for work, doubting my progresses, too often questioning myself on what to do when I should just chill and not overthink everything so much.

Treating yourself like someone you love: showing yourself thoughtful attentions, going easy of yourself, being patient, encouraging and believing in yourself.

Working out! It really makes me feel so much better.

Ive only had frozen yogurt once and didnt really understood the concept lol ice cream forever, the cookie dough one is just genius (or evil considering how quickly it disappears!)

Bodyweight workouts at home ! Theres a lot to do "only" with bodyweight, doing a bit of cardio added with strength training!

So well rounded. I'm doing yoga and walking/hiking now. I was running (but it's so hot now!). And riding horses and doing barn chores whenever I can. I also figure skate....but the rinks are just starting to open. They are too expensive to go yet.
Do you know any good videos online? Or do you just know your workout?

It definitely got hard to go for runs ! Well I end up drenched in sweat anyway even when I work out at home haha!
I bet barn chores must be a sneaky yet great way to do some strength work! I hope you can get back to figure skating soon, it looks so intense but beautiful!
As for videos, I follow videos from Sissy Mua on youtube but theyre in French so Im not sure it would help you much… But I used to follow the videos made by Darebee before, and Blogilates also does interesting workouts!

Sorry to hear you've been feeling tired and doubting, that must take a toll! Glad to hear you're feeling motivated, interested, and persistent, though! Sounds like you've got a goal and you're not about to give up
Setting and maintaining a regular and healthy sleep schedule is much harder than it seems, I hear you! Sorry to hear that it isn't working for you, even though you're putting in so much effort *sends sleepy vibes and hot tea* *throws pillow and blankies* I hope you manage to get some rest and maybe find something that works for you long-term!
I understand what you mean by doubting yourself sometimes we look back at our progress and our work, and be a bit unsure of if we've accomplished anything. Overthinking can be so tough to avoid! It's this little nagging voice in the back of our mind. Sorry to hear it's been getting a but louder for you. I hope you manage to recognize how far in the journey of life you've come, and how much you accomplish every day! I don't know you too well, but your SHR check-ins definitely help people and make people's day.
That's such a lovely perspective on self-care! It is definitely all of those things. It's being patient, encouraging yourself, believing and trusting in yourself, being kind to your failures, and recognizing your successes! Thank you for sharing this with us

Three things that I wish to change in my life right now would be to open up more to others and to be less distant with my family. The last thing I wish to change is to be more productive because I procrastinate waaay too much :')
3. Youre trying to explain self-care to someone who has never heard of it before. How do you explain it?
I would explain it by saying it's taking time out of your day to do something for yourself. It doesn't need to be something big. It can be as simple as taking a shower or taking 5 minutes and just sitting in silence if that's what you want to do.
4. What is your favourite self-care activity that you practice on a daily basis?
Umm what's practicing self care on a daily basis... oops..
5. Frozen yogurt or ice cream?
Ice cream!! Some people consider frozen yogurt to be ice cream so I can just be one of those people and eat both hehe

Opening up can be so difficult, I hear you! Sometimes we want to, but struggle. I hope you manage to make progress toward that goal. You've got this! I undertand being distant with family. Oh no, procrastination! Being productive can be rough because sometimes finding the energy to take initiative can feel impossible.
Yes! Self-care can be the simplest of things, it totally depends on you. It is definitely doing something where you don't feel a sense of responsibility.

Monotonous, Hopeful, Lonely, Supported (I know those shouldn't be together but they are), Anxious
2. Tell me three things that you wish you could change in your life right now. Is there a way that you could make these changes?
A) To be truly loved by someone/to have a family that cares/boyfriend/just anyone who cares
B) To be able to break free of seeing myself defined by my abuse. By the panic, flashbacks, anxiety, pain, and SH. To be done with all of it and to be able to grow into who I want to be without fear.
C) To find my purpose and find a way to meaningfully serve others
D) To lose a lot of weight really fast and to be fully and physically fit.
3. Youre trying to explain self-care to someone who has never heard of it before. How do you explain it?
Taking the time to rejuvenate and heal physically and mentally by doing something that lets both your body and mind relax, heal, and find peace

Trying to be yoga. Walking/hiking as much as I can. Kitty snuggles

Sorry to hear you've been feeling lonely, a bit dull, and anxious! Those are all such tough feelings *hugs* I'm glad to feel you're supported and love (and it is perfectly okay to feel what you feel. We can definitely feel lonely but also supported, I get it!)
I understand wanting to have someone who cares I know it can be such a struggle to feel like there are people out there who care for you. I hope you manage to find someone and create a healthy relationship. Breaking free of trauma can take so much effort. It's a long journey, and you're here, doing this check-in, so I know you're taking steps forward! I wish you the best on your journey. You've got this!

To have my own safe space, I am working on that. To have my cat back, I still don't know how I'm going to do that. To be debt free, I would like to go back to work part time but that is up to the docs.

A way to nurture and heal yourself. A good way to stay healthy and happy.
