Welcome to the Faith, Religion, and Spirituality Community on 7 Cups!

GlenM August 31st, 2023

This community has been a lonnnnggggg time coming. People have been requesting a dedicated space to talk about faith, religion and spirituality for quite a while. Apologies for the delay!

There is a significant amount of research that suggests religion and spirituality can be therapeutic. William James (one of our first psychologists) suggested understanding religion is right up there with understanding how people think, feel, and relate to one another. Indeed, there are nearly 8 billion people on the planet and 85% of people are religious or spiritual in one way or another. Any one thing that 85% of humans do suggests it is pretty important!

So, at long last, here is a home for religion and spirituality on 7 Cups. We imagine this as a safe space for people of all faiths to explore and support one another. I think we'll see sub-forums for all of the major world religions, newer faiths, and all sorts of spiritualities. We are starting with a handful of world religions. If you would like to request a category, then please let us know in the comments. All are welcome!

I'll close with this interesting point about religion. Religion comes from the Latin word "religare" which mean to re-ligament, re-connect, re-new or re-bind. It indicates that there is something broken about humanity and that religion might be able to help us reconnect to something healing that we lost along the way.

I, personally, don't get strung up on religion. I believe in God and love my Heavenly Father & his son Jesus. ♡ That's what matters to me. I can get along and respect anyone no matter what their beliefs. Everyone has the right to believe in what they want and I'm happy we have this place where we can connect with others. ♡ I hope that we are all able to accept one another, show respect, form bonds and learn from each other, and draw stronger in our faith. ♡ Xoxo.

This is so nice. May Jesus Christ bless you and your coworkers Glen for doing this at 7Cups. Maybe we can discuss a little bit, maybe give some uplifting words (me from the Bible lol). Yes - man is body, soul and spirit! And for many of us - having peace means being connected in our heart to God. A nice Bibleverse: Psalm 91:11-12 "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone."

I can already see this is one thread I will not be at home in... Obviously it's for religious people. I was raised within a major* religion but did not stay there, though later I did return & try to believe & live by its rules for a while. Didn't work. I'm too much of a skeptic, ask too many inconvenient questions & have learned too much scientific info about the real, physical world to wholeheartedly believe in any mystical doctrine. Re spiritual things/deities/etc., I settled into a considered agnosticism a long time ago. Also, as a result of some scriptural study & reading plenty of history (mainly military & religious), I have certain firm opinions on religion in general & certain religions particularly. You probably wouldn't want to hear them.

*well, not so major. The number of people in my native tradition is dwarfed by the total numbers of Christians & Muslims, globally.

@slowdecline48 You're more than welcome to be here if you want to be! Everyone will just need to come to the "table" with the ability to share their own beliefs while not cutting down anyone elses 🙂

@beck1 re "come to the 'table' with the ability to share their own beliefs while not cutting down anyone elses" Now that's the trick, isn't it?...tbh I don't see a great lifespan for this "community" (subcommunity, actually) because the membership will not be able to pull it off for that long. Surely you know the old rule of thumb "when at work, do not discuss politics & religion"...there's a reason for that. In two major world religions--I don't have to name them; you'll know--spreading the faith & attracting new members is an essential task for all believers. This inevitably involves preaching, as well as laying out arguments as to why one's own religion is the best one & why others are not as good. In certain religious communities/sects, such behavior is ubiquitous.

Also, what if criticism of another religion/faith is a basic part of someone else's position? As an agnostic with a bit more knowledge of past wars & atrocities, imperial expansions & the doctrines behind them than the average John/Jane Doe, it is certainly true in my case. (I've been into milhist & relighist for over a decade now)

I wish I could be more positive, but I just don't see how this subcommunity is going to work out. It's obvious that I'm unsuited....thus I must decline, & wish you & all the members good luck.

@slowdecline48

I similarly think that the new forum is not a place for me. At least not for now. I have found this post a little triggering, due to a past experience. 7 cups is a safe place for me because the subject of religion is not allowed.

However, I understand that some people want to discuss these topics, and I see that it is only fair that they have a space for that. And I look forward to the day that I can visit.

Thanks, as always, for allowing me to be heard.

@slowdecline48

well theres many things we can relate and share whatever you believe in as religion is usually a moral guide. In my case my love for my religion comes from the art and what i believe is the moral it offers that i thought about and agreed with. Im chatolic and i believe in one god who made the big bang happen and now we the human species are re discovering the gods will and way to run the universe. So dont feel discouroage to share your thoughts
