Here's why Karaoke is the answer to all your problems.

TawkToMe August 14th, 2023

Okay, maybe not every problem, but hear me out.

Karaoke attracts a certain kind of people, generally tolerant and accepting people. Karaoke also repels a certain kind of people, that is, people that are not tolerant and accepting. I've been in a karaoke bar and heard people walk in and say, "Oh crap, there's karaoke", and walk out.

Unlike competitive activities I've been involved in (like billiards for example), karaoke is a cooperative activity. Everybody has a little fear about getting up and singing in front of a group, so, people tend to be gracious towards the singer.

If you want to meet someone, "Hey I really liked your song" is a great way to break the ice.

And before you object, here's the thing: It doesn't matter if you can sing or not. Even if you're the worst singer in the room, you're helping to keep those nasty intolerant people away. At the places I go, it won't matter either, you'll get applause, because just having the nerve to get up there and sing is worthy of respect.

At one of my favorite places, there's a guy that is SOOOO bad, he hasn't the slightest sense of pitch at all. Add to that that he always wants to sing these big dramatic songs (Bohemian Rhapsody, My Way, Stairway to Heaven, etc.). Two different people on two different occasions said to me, "You know, I wasn't going to sing until I heard him sing". So, again, it doesn't matter if you can't sing, you're still doing us all a service.

I used to scoff at karaoke. I thought it was the dumbest thing ever. I got into it about 12 years ago and now like half of my friends are connected somehow through karaoke.

I LOVE Karaoke... Its one of my favorites....

I can see your viewpoints listed, however I also have my own take on some of them....

I guess it would depend on "where" you are at, and what the environment/atmosphere is.....Generally where I've gone or been or have done it, people are in fact tolerant whether you are good or bad (or whatever) etc.... However, I do tend to notice at a few places I've been, that if someone gets up out of the blue and does an EXTRAORDINARY Job at it, that someone else might no longer want to do it because they now fear how or have anxiety about how they sound in comparison. (Even if they've already been up there a few times 'Before' the other person came along)!

So I guess it just depends on the person, the scene, etc... And of course for me (personally).. I definitely will NOT get up there thinking I have the Chops of MARIAH CAREY or whatever haha... For me, I pick songs that are "Fun & engaging" and that I know I have the confidence & the "range" to sing within lol... This way I know it will work for me & that I will most likely sound good singing it because of the confidence I have performing it!

I've been doing it since the mid-90's ..... GO KARAOKE!

Then I must be one of those "nasty intolerant" people you mentioned, since drunks attempting to sing are a sure-fire way to make me vacate the premises.

I used to be more tolerant of tipsy shenanigans in general when I was younger; anything short of fights or deliberate property destruction were funny to watch, & sometimes hilarious. These days I still occasionally find humor in such conduct but it's rare now. With age, I've lost patience for most human foibles. The less time you have left, the less of it you're willing to waste.

For a few years now, I've had a secret hypothesis that as karaoke is a Japanese invention, whoever came up with the idea did so as a means of vengeance for our nuking Hiroshima & Nagasaki...I cannot conclusively prove it either way, but I still believe it to this day.

@slowdecline48 I don't see a lot of 'drunks' singing as you put it. I don't like drunks either.

Again, I've made many friends through karaoke. I don't consider that a waste of time.

That's an interesting theory.

I would never suggest that anyone is 'nasty' because they don't like karaoke. I never even said 'nasty'. I said that intolerant people tend to stay away.

It's not for everybody.

Lol I've been considering trying karaoke to get over my social anxiety/fear of performing. The only problem is I'm actually a trained singer, so I actually do sound really good, so I'd end up making people feel bad. I have legit reasons for wanting to go up there (try to control nerves), but I don't want to take away the fun of the atmosphere.

@HidaYasu people need to deal with their on sensitivites. Most people are going to be thrilled that someone so good is joining their ranks.

Oh my, Do I totally get what you are saying? First-hand experience with that. People will lean more toward the voice that sounds so good, and finding that place of comfort can be hard. Let me say this, my dear: It is not your issue that others can enjoy your gift and use it no matter what others choose to do. You have your reasons why you are singing, and that is no one else's concern. You sing and sing your best. You have this gift to use, and yes, this will help you get over that social issue. It did for me,

I use to shake like a leaf on a tree before I had to perform. You got this so go for the stars🌞
