On this Cups-giving Reflection Sunday, I first invite everyone to take some time to engage in some self-reflection. While this cups-giving has been filled with posts and activities that focus on thankfulness and identifying what we are thankful for, today let’s take a moment to reflect.


Self-reflection is an activity where we take time to be present in the moment, focus internally and examine our thoughts, feelings, actions, and motivations with intention. So as we wrap up our week of thankfulness consider the kinds of thoughts that dominate your focus day to day, how do you feel in general? Do your actions reflect your values, thoughts and feelings? What are the motivations that drive you to act in a certain way? Perhaps consider how you experience thankfulness and explore how you might carry thankfulness with you beyond this week? How might you work to create more to be thankful for in your own life and the lives of those around you?


Beyond self reflection, perhaps we can also take time to reflect as a community, consider the experiences and encounters of the previous year, how have they changed or shaped our communities? 


Within the LGBTQ+ community, it can be easy to see a lot of the challenges, get lost in the hate, and struggle to find reasons to be thankful. But I encourage us to also take the time to reflect on the progress that has been made and the opportunities this year has allowed for those of us in the LGBTQ+ community.


So please, take some time to truly reflect and consider, and explore what thankfulness means to you. Reflect upon this past year both as an individual and as a global community. If you are willing, share some of your observations here with us on this Reflection Sunday?

If you need a starting point, here are a few basic self-reflection questions you may want to explore. Consider also how your answers to these questions might influence your ability to be thankful.

  • What are my core values and beliefs?

  • Am I living my life the way I want, or have I settled for something less?

    Actually, some of my answers are scary so I obviously need to do a little more reflection and I hope others will too, as our behavior and actions affect others around us too.

    one of my goals is to get into university!

  • What motivates me to achieve those goals?

    the fact i want to become a psychologist!

    my greatest strength is that i am capable of studying and my weakness is that i procrastinate a lot xD

    that i am smart!

    that i need to find ways to deal with procrastination and remind myself of my goal in order to continue studying daily

    as of now i think i am living the way i want!

    To finish this year and to get my havo diploma, also i wanna look into studying in Korea and hopefully get there next year.

  • What motivates me to achieve those goals?

    My future life goals and that I want to keep improving myself and that I wanna have a new experience and to improve my life.

  • What are my greatest strengths and weaknesses?

    My strenghts are communication, perseverance and ghat I always want to improve and do my best. my weaknesses are that sometimes I have trouble communication my needs with my loved ones.

  • What have I learned from my successes?

    That failure is needed to achieve succes.

  • What have I learned from my failures?

    That me failing is extra motivation to achieve succes and to keep doing my best.

  • Am I living my life the way I want, or have I settled for something less?

    I'm not quite there yet, I still need to keep working on getting the best life that I want

Thank you to everyone who took the time to engage in some serious self-reflection, these questions can indeed be difficult to answer, but hopefully the answers you all found for yourself will help you to learn and grow. 

For myself, here is a small peek at how I would answer those questions:

  • What are my goals?

    I've always thought of myself as having simple goals, wanting enough from life, having a place to call home, enough food to eat, and enough love around me to make a life worth living. I suppose a goal now for me is to take the steps needed to share more of this life with the one I hold dear.

  • What motivates me to achieve those goals?

    I guess the need for emotional balance and a sense of mental wellness underlies the motivation for these particular goals.

  • What are my greatest strengths and weaknesses?

    This is one aspect I often struggle to see, I know doing the character traits test helped me to recognize that my creativity, ability to view the world from multiple perspectives, love of learning, empathy and sense of humor serve me well as strengths. As for weaknesses, I continue to work on my boundaries, maintaining enthusiasm for mundane tasks, and ability to tolerate uncertainty and other's anger.

  • What have I learned from my successes?
    My successes have taught me what is possible, what I am able to achieve.

  • What have I learned from my failures?
    My failures have taught me to recognize when to ask for help, when to go back and learn a new way forward, when to re-evaluate my priorities or take time to reframe my perspective and goals.

  • What are my core values and beliefs?

    I value the idea of enough, a life that has it's ups and downs but enough of each to keep you in balance. So I guess I also value that balance,  balance with yourself, balance with others, and balance with nature/the world. Another of my values would be love in all its forms.

  • Am I living my life the way I want, or have I settled for something less?

    There are times I feel I have settled for less, but other moments I see how the peace I have with where I am in this moment is what allows me to travel the path to where I want to be, so perhaps I've not settled for something less but rather made peace with the journey that is leading me to those things I want and value.

  • Does how I spend my time reflect the things that truly matter to me?

    Sometimes. When it does, I am most fulfilled. When it does not, I feel more tired and long to get back to the space where the time I spend is once again aligned with what matters to me.

  • Do the expectations of others sidetrack me from my own priorities?

    Yes. This is one of my weaknesses. I feel strongly compelled to fulfill the expectations of others, in part out of fear of their anger when I do not. But I work to reaffirm my own priorities and mitigate any distress that results from the reactions of others.

  • How is who I am today a product of my life experiences?

    I would not be who I am, value what I do, or have the goals that I have were it not for the various experiences, obstacles, and opportunities that brought me to this point. So who I am today is a reflection of the life I've lived with the tools and knowledge I have learned along the way.
