Hello Leadership Crew!
Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In todays discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.
To start, please read this post here  and watch this video.
The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy. A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldnt integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, youd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but itll be the byproduct of eating healthy.
Another example might be education. I dont really care all that much about grades for my kids. I mostly want them to learn and enjoy learning. We talk about what they learn, we draw things, they make their own educational videos, they explain things to me in their own words etc. I want them to have a system of learning and refining their perspective on things. If they have this system, then having good grades will be a natural result of enjoying learning.
This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages. Or, zooming back, think about this leadership development program. We could have an arbitrary goal of training a certain number of new leaders to serve our community; or we can co-create a system - this leadership development program - that helps people become leaders. The natural consequence of the program will be a higher number of trained, competent, and strong leaders that can better support our community. Â

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
The system that i would put in place is one that i already have and working on. It is to Keep a large good in a realistic time frame to work towards with alot of smaller goals to hit along the way.
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
* Work on the small things regardless of how un important they seem
*Do not try to fix everything at once and instead try to fix 1 thing at a time so as to not become overwhelemed
*Keep positive no matter what and be the best you that you can be!
Hey LDP Lovelies :)
So A system that I need to set up - Remembering to take time for myself and not always put others first.
Three ways I could acheive this;
1 - Schedule "me" days do nothing else on these days other than what makes me happy.
2 - Respectfully tell friends and family that I'm not a magician and cant fix every thing 🤣
3 - Be kind yet firm, dont get me wrong I love being there for others, but I need to start thinking of myself more and politely declining things I dont want to do is a must from now on :)
@GlenM
The system would be the to get good grades, the process would be to
create a structured revision timetable
Sticking to the timetable
Having enough resources to support my revision
@GlenM
What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
To build a system, I need 3 things:
1. Pick a direction to go in: start my own non-profit organization
2. Find out how to get there by asking good questions:
How does someone start a non profit organization
What are the requirements
3. Experiment with the answers and readjust
Take a course on starting a non-profitDone: but find my self lacking motivation and lack of time
Adjustments: pick specific times to work on project
Find others to help with tasks, delegate
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
1. Dedicate specific times to working on specific projects/tasks
2. Delegate to others and ask for help with tasks
3. Continue creative thinking, write down all ideas, research new possibilities and ways of doing things different
@GlenM
I really liked the article. When I started reading it, i was feeling neutral but the more I read, the more interesting facts I saw and I really enjoyed the logical parts, real life examples and the difference between a goal and a system which made me realize that I don't put a system but i set a goal that motivates me which I sometimes accomplish and other times leave along the way.
What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
I think I need to start making a time management system to prioritize my studies and my work while giving them both the time that I need to get them done without neglecting any.
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
1. Make a list of things I want to get done each day and for how long and not leaving them for "later"
2. Make studying more fun by discussing it with my friends or watching animated videos to better understand the content
3. Take short breaks by doing any fun activity (like this one!) then go back to what I was doing

@GlenM
What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
For me specifically, a key system that I need set up in my life is one of Self Care. One cannot succeed when they are not feeling their own needs are being met and if they feel they are pouring from a cup that isnt full. This system could intersect with others, but the importance of this system must be focused on the self care needed at any given moment.
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
1) Self-care is about balance. By making balance a priority, touching base with myself moment by moment to be aware of what I need and if I need to do anything else to find that balance and inner serenity each moment and step in my life. Checkins a few times a day can help me in case I lose track of the moment by moment aspect here.
2) Regular sleep is very important for the mind, body, and soul. By making sure I stick to my bedtimes and ensure I get healthy amounts of sleep, my selfcare will start to fall into place as I will be in a good and healthy starting point.
3) Finally, eating healthy foods, drinking enough water, and avoiding unheathy foods in large amounts is important for this self-care system. I already do this, so its more about maintaining it than anything. A healthy and well cared for body is able to not only deal with stresses better, but a healthy body leads to healthy practices and mindsets that can bufffer against chronic and maladaptive behaviours and situations.
@GlenM

I want to create a journal of all the positive things I have done and will continue to do, so when I doubt myself in the future I will be able to look through my journal at all the positivite things I have done in my time here.
