Hello Leadership Crew!
Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In todays discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.
To start, please read this post here  and watch this video.
The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy. A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldnt integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, youd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but itll be the byproduct of eating healthy.
Another example might be education. I dont really care all that much about grades for my kids. I mostly want them to learn and enjoy learning. We talk about what they learn, we draw things, they make their own educational videos, they explain things to me in their own words etc. I want them to have a system of learning and refining their perspective on things. If they have this system, then having good grades will be a natural result of enjoying learning.
This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages. Or, zooming back, think about this leadership development program. We could have an arbitrary goal of training a certain number of new leaders to serve our community; or we can co-create a system - this leadership development program - that helps people become leaders. The natural consequence of the program will be a higher number of trained, competent, and strong leaders that can better support our community. Â
What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed? What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.
This post is brought to you by the Leadership Development Program Team, find out more information about the program here.
The 3 systems I would like to commit honestly and fully determined would be
1) Study and practice everyday. Learn something important and new. Practice.
2) Manage my eating habits and walk daily.
3) Relax and rewind and study.
3 behaviors I would like to implement is
1) Staying focused - I easily lose focus and get distracted.
2) Staying motivated - Things require a lot of dedication and motivation to be properly.
3) Managing time
@wonderfulKermitKaTy any general determination of the system where do you want to succeed in your life? that would be helpful, because those you listed feels both as behaviors and as system. TIA
@windSpirit My general determination is to improve myself. I think this is what you were asking :)
What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
Generally, helping others more - It's about being more in volunteering.
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
1. Participate in one community giveaways to homeless
2. Learn how to talk and interact with people in more posive way and practicing it
3. Do donations it the right way - to right communities and deeds and not in a way pushing limits of my resources too much, be balanced in this way.
@GlenM
A key system that I need to set up in my life in order to succeed is that I need to stop putting others' mental healths before my own. I keep helping others even when it drags my own mental health down, and it isn't helping me or them. In order to have this system, three behaviours I need to implement are: I need to recognize when a chat is bringing me down, I need to push myself to take a break when I feel my mental health dropping, and I need to seek help when I'm feeling down.
@TheWonderlandSystem17
Hey I'm glad they you want to start putting your mental health above others! I believe that would really benefit you in the long run and it'd also just be fair for you to prioritize yourself! Hope it's going well for you!
@TheWonderlandSystem17 This sounds like a great system! You are a wonderful person for wanting to put everyone else before you, but like you mentioned, self-care is so important and I'm glad you are working on putting yourself first :)
We become what we think about most of the time, and that's the strangest secret." --Earl Nightingale
A system I should set up for myself is knowing that I am learning new skills every day
In order to ensure that the system works:
I should record my learning activities whenever I can
I should recognize the new skills I gained whenever I can
I should practice gratitude whenever I reach a milestone
@competentParadise6344
learning a new skill is definitely a great system
@GlenM
Thankyou for this discussion, for some reason I am unable to access the video linked ,but the reference post is an amazing read .
A system I'd like to develop is reducing overthinking and increasing gratitude.
Three key steps I can take are-:
● Taking things as they come, focusing on present
● Separating the needs of today and the wants of tomorrow, with the limits of yesterday
● Keeping a gratitude journal and practicing gratitude on a regular basis
@Sunisshiningandsoareyou
I went through your post. I really like the behaviour and key steps you want to implement.
grattitude yeah i missed out. I am keeping note in my diary for that.
@blindHeart12

I went through yours too, and those are great systems and key steps for a healthy living , keep going , You've got this my friend ❤
@Sunisshiningandsoareyou
I love how you structure your sentences, they really seemed like motivating statements that motivated me.
Also, I agree with your idea of having a gratitude journal. I tried writing it and it certainly makes you feel more thankful and positive.
Aw hey @UnicornsCottonCandy , thanks so much for replying to me , glad you feel my sentences are motivational ❤ also yay to maintaining a gratitude journal, it does help us feel more positive and thankful for life and about life , agreed ! 😊
@GlenM
What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
A key system in which I need to set up in my life to help me succeed is to appreciate my achievements more instead of negatively endulging on what I could have done or have failed to do in the past.
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
1. Be more nice to myself, I think I don't really take care of myself as much as I should, so improving on this by being more kind to myself emotionally would help me in appreciating myself and my achievements more.
2. Stop negatively thinking about what others think, I think if I realised that no one actually cares what I do specifically and that no one is really judging what I do each day then I would succeed more in life and would be able to be more kind to myself which would help implementing my system. Sometimes I'm too focused on if others think I'm doing something wrong, weird, odd, anything like that, when I should be thinking what I think.
3. Stop worrying about past things I've done, this would be good, so then I can move on and improve myself for the future and present instead of spending my time thinking about the past.
@kieran000
it seem in same page when come to be more nice to ourself. I too have to work on it.
Best of luck kieran
@blindHeart12
Thanks! Good luck with it too! You're doing great :)
@kieran000
I really agree to the 3 behaviors you have listed on your post, especially the one that tells yourself to stop overthinking about my past actions which I can never change. I also needed that as I have been feeling that I'm not moving forward due to the concerns related to my past friendship issues. Thanks for sharing, Kieran!
@kieran000
Hey I feel the same way and I think I would adopt this system too! Appreciating yourself for your achievements is so important, and sometimes thinking about how things could have been better or how people judge you just put you down unnecessarily. Kudos to you!!
Enjoying the present moment while working on something is the key of success. Focus: When you focus on your work, you get better results. Curiosity: Little details of your life can take you to a whole new worlds. Relaxation: When you focus on the little steps, you feel more in calm and balance.
@GlenM
The key system I would like to set up in life is: Following a structure.
3 key things that I can implement in my life to set up the system would be:
- Journaling.
- Making everyday to-do checklist.
- Procrastinate as little as possible.
@MishiS
It seems that we're quite similar in personality. I also feel that I need to have a more structured life where I can use my time and and emotions more efficiently. The 3 behaviors that you've listed really helped me to be more motivated. Thanks!
@MishiS
Following a structure is a great system
@GlenM
Alright, here we go!
A key system I need to set up would be to wake up at (or before) 5:00 a.m. This routine will probably help me in doing meditation, reading more, and preparing for the day beforehand which obviously adds to my satisfaction.
The three things I can implement to achieve my goal are as follows:
a. Set up an alarm clock
b. Meditate, drink a glass of water, and exercise, as well as maintain my gratitude journal, remaining offline until noon and reading.
c. Changing my sleeping schedule since I tend to behave as a night owl at times which hampers my productivity in the morning when the surroundings are calm and serene.
@marvelloustree1111 meditation is really cool!
@GlenM A few key systems that I need to set up in my life to help me succeed would be to let go of some negative thoughts/feelings, create better boundaries for myself, and to create more goals.
Three behaviors I can implement to help me gradually grow that new system in my life would be changing the way I think on some things, knowing what is best for me, and to stay on track of what's going well for me.
