The first 3 conversations helped us set the foundation for this discussion. The idea that the problem is the path or the obstacle is the way comes from the Stoics. If interested, I also recommend this book as a good overview of stoic thinking. I think there is a tremendous amount of wisdom in these ancient ideas. I'm glad to see much of it resurfacing now. ÃÃÂ
This disucssion is the most important discussion in this course. This is the core insight to learn for your own personal and professional development as well as the key insight that will continue to help us grow and evolve at 7 Cups. Please really take your time to think through these ideas. They matter and they are meaningful. These ideas can help change the trajectory of your life.

1) Key Points Ch 4: - Problems are gifts: we can learn from them. - Problems teach us to ask for help - Problems teach you to ask for help 2) Key components of Video: - Perception: how we see the world surrounding us and our problems - Action: How and what we do what we do and how we solve our problems - Will: working on building ourselves
What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you?
3 key points from Chapter 4 that stood out to me:
- Problems teach us to ask for help. - Teach us humility as most problems are too big and can't be solved alone.
- Problems help us level up. - Video game language. If you solve the current problem, then you gain knowledge to face the next problem. If you don't solve the current problem, it keeps coming back.
- Problems teach us how to authentically care for other people. - Problems teach you compassion like nothing else does.
In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components Ryan Holiday outlined in the video.
The 3 key components Ryan Holiday outlined in the video are:
- Perception - How you see the problem, instead of viewing the problem as a setback or obstacle, it’s viewed as an opportunity to do something different.
- Action - To do something about the problem by responding to it with creativity, persistence and ingenuity.
- Will - We don’t control what’s outside of ourselves. It’s important to embrace and accept whatever happens to us and learn to enjoy it as much as possible.
I like the level up metaphor
@richuyulin Yes. These points that you make are so true.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread. ÃÃÂ
1. problems help us grow
2.problems help us break free from the distraction system
3. They teach us to ask for help
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video. ÃÃÂ
1.Perception: How we see the problem we can't chose to have the problem or not but we can choose how we view it if we decide to view the problem as a setback as unfair and horrible then that's what is going to be but on the other hand if we choose to view it as an opportunity to grow to learn then that's exactly what it is going to be
2.Action: Action is the core. Action is what we do to tackle the problem we take action with creativity and persistence
3. Will: Will is the strength the understanding our inner mortality and that there are things that are bigger than us and there are causes bigger than us that we dedicate ourselves to Its about embracing loving accepting things that happen to us even if they aren't necessarily good things
Every winner was once a loser who got up and gave it one more shot
1. Positive Spin on problems : We have always come to associate the problems with a negative connotation. And that's a part of the reason why we want to stay in denial and distractions. Putting it in a positive spin and framing the problem better can help us face it head on.
2. Gold Nugget : Seeing all the benefits that problems provide, they almost as a catalyst to personal growth in a way nothing else can. I really liked the example of hitting the rock bottom and how problems help to change ourselves.
3. Opportunity for Personal Growth : Seeing problmes as just another oppotunity for personal growth. And letting in Aunt Maggie and talking to her and waiting for your reward.
Three things in the Video
To start off he explained about Stoicism and how many successful people in the world use it to see problems as a catalyst for growth. I found the Edison version really funny and at the same time inspiring.
1. Perception : The basic idea is how we look at the problem. And he correctly points out that it is not going to change magically. We need to over time change the idea of how we percieve our problems.
2. Action : Control what you can control and forget about the rest. Just focus on the inner circle if I were to connect to the thing we already learner.
3. Will : Understanding and realising that some things are bigger than us. And we can't control them. Just Acceptance of these ideas.
What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you?
Problems break you out of distraction systems. This stood out to me because of how much I recognise it from my own life. If you want to get lost in social media, the problem will still be waiting for you after. If you want to get lost falling asleep, the problem will be waiting for you when you wake up. As soon as you acknowledge the problem and begin dealing with it, you no longer get lost in those distraction systems.
Problems teach you to ask for help. Problems are difficult to deal with on your own, and so you are forced to seek help from someone else. This is so important because, like the book says, we are social creatures and social interaction helps us grow and learn and, in this instance, helps us to solve our problems.
Problems teach you to open up and care for other people. This stood out to me because of how important it is. Once you have faced pain and worked on your own problems, you are more compelled to care for others who are also facing their own problems. We recognise that they are facing a similar struggle to what we previously were, and so we really care for them and want to help them solve their problem.
In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components Ryan Holiday outlined in the video.
Perception: Our future is determined by both positive and negative perception. It is hard to move forward and take action if we see our problem as a never-ending wave of failure. If we see our problem as a way towards success, however, then it becomes too easy.
Action: We must recognise what we need to do in order to overcome our problem, and then we must take the appropriate action to overcome the problem.
Will: We have to accept that we are unable to change everything.
@IcedEthan Yes. Becoming conscious and aware of these shared issues, struggles and pains. And opening up and reaching out and getting support is very important so that we can help ourselves and solve problems. I agree that social media is a big distraction when we get lost in it versus using it in more helpful ways. I like how you mention that we have to accept that we are unable to change everything. Coming to that acceptance makes life a lot easier. And it surely makes it even easier when we see our problems as a pathway to success versus a road of failure, like you mentioned.
@IcedEthan
Exactly problems are blessings in disguise.
@bubblingBreeze14
Yes.. problems are indeed blessings in disguise
@bubblingBreeze14
Problems benefit us by helping us grow. The only way to break free is to face your problems even though it involves emotional pain, struggle, and it takes work. Going through all of that allows the benefits of getting to live a real meaningful life and make the world a better place.
@IcedEthan
Perception - the way we decide to view the problem. We decide to focus on it as a good thing, then we will be able to see the opportunity. We can take this as a benefit and the chance to grow as a person.
Action - what we control about the situation we are in. The words we say. Our reactions.
Will - gathering our inner strength and understanding that there is something bigger than us. Standing back and understanding there is more to this and take from it what we can to move forward in the best way.

They force us to change. Sometimes we hit bottom causing us no choice, but to change.
-
Problems free us from distraction systems because they refuse to leave you alone.

How you turn what’s in the way, into the way.
Reactions and actions are what we control about the situation we are in
1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you? Please post them in this thread.
Problems are gifts in disguise. We need to face the problems rather than avoiding them. They can unlock our true potential.
Problems break down denial. When problems become overwhelming we can’t ignore them any longer. And ultimately they force us to change.
Problems teach us humility. They teach us to ask for help.
2. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
Perception: We can either look at our problems as a never-ending wave of failure or we can look at them as an opportunity towards success. That will decide whether we give up on them or solve them to bring growth.
Action: It’s how we respond to the problem. Only taking positive action to solve the problem can bring change into the situation.
Will: Accepting things that we cannot control and change.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.
First is that problems are teachers we can use them as learning opportunities. The second is that life is like a video game: if we do not learn what we were meant to learn from this problem or challenge, we will see this problem again in some similar form. The third is that problems break us out of denial. It is hard to avoid reality when we have a genuine need and we may need to ask for help. This really reminds me of the past discussion in which we sort of went over things that people were addicted to such as the videogames, social media, etc.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book The Obstacle is the way... In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
He says the way to turn the obstacle into the path is by "perception, action, and will." Perceive the situation accurately, act appropriately, and strengthen the will to overcome and continue.
It is so easy to hide away and not acknowledge Aunt Maggie; yes it is easier to ignore than welcome what she brings. For me, this is suppressing my pain, keeping it in the comfort area to handle it's easier there.
When I do welcome Aunt Maggie in she is easier to handle with a quick 30-minute meditation. At least I have given her this time and acknowledged her, but that's it otherwise she gets too difficult to deal with and I never have the energy or time for that.
I do find she is knocking again every 5-10 minutes and it's getting harder to ignore her and when I keep letting her in, I'm feeling overwhelmed by all the information I'm receiving. Man, it's draining, consistent, confusing and I'm feeling tired.
I hope with time, acknowledging Aunt Maggie and having time with her in meditation and listening to her will become easier to reach out. I can then start to put the pieces together from the puzzle and start moving forward.
In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components Ryan Holiday outlined in the video?
1) Perception - When we keep looking through negative lenses all we see and feel is negativity. All problems and failures have a silver lining (like the grey clouds) we need to change our lenses to see them.
2) Action - Once we see the silver lining by turning our negatives into positives then its gentle baby steps forward in making positive changes. Being kind to ourselves and giving ourselves lots of self-care.
3) Will - Through the action, we can find the will to keep moving forward; To change our future while acknowledging we cannot change what has been, what's done and what's in the past.
1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Viewing the story in different points of view, probloems in lives need to be challenged, and it's ok to need help facing problems.
2. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
Perception: how someone sees an action
Action: reacting to a problem
Well: fearing things that can be dealt with
