Course 2: Becoming a 7 Cups Leader - (Discussion #11) Avoiding Burnout
7 Cups is founded on a community of passionate volunteers who lovingly dedicate their time to providing support.
You may face what is called burnout during your journey. You may have already faced this in your real life. Burnout is very real and must be recognized. You can't help fuel someone else when your tank is empty, after all!
To address and learn about burnout, we have created a slidedeck on how to avoid burnout.
Activity: Please read it through and in the replies, tell us what you learned, and what you will do to stay healthy and avoid burnout!
Then, please reply to 3 of your peers in this thread with encouraging or supportive words!
After completing the course quiz, please proceed to this post!
This post is brought to you by the Leadership Development Program Team, find out more information about the program here.
I have learned that it's important to recognize the symptoms of burnout so I understand when or if it's happening, but I have also learned it's even more important to prevent burnout. We can prevent burnout by making sure to set boundaries and properly schedule downtimes and breaks.
I will avoid burnout by thinking about and making a schedule right away, which includes downtime from 7 Cups!
@FlourishingDimensions
Hello!
I totally agree with you! The most important part is definitely making sure that you can recognize the signs of burnout.
@FlourishingDimensions
I too find scheduling things very important. Thanks for sharing!
@FlourishingDimensions
I'm so glad to see you're taking action on this right away, you've got this!
yeah downtime is so essential!
Lovely..

- I think self-care is essential for burnout. Setting schedules and setting boundaries to make sure that you are not spending more time over here than you should. By that I mean, staying in a group chat past your bedtime just because you feel bad about leaving. Another way is making sure that your tank is full and that you are drinking enough water, going outside, and getting some sunlight. Maybe make some time for friends and family.
@Andyallen
Oh yes, it is very important t keep the tank full. Thank you for sharing!
@Andyallen
I love your idea for a good self-care break, thank you for your answer Andy!
@Andyallen well said andy
@Andyallen
Greatt.
@Andyallen
I totally agree with you, and you brought up some great points! Making yourself a schedule is such a great way to organize your chat sessions and meetings with your project team. Also, by setting boundaries, you can make sure that you allocate some time for yourself outside of 7 Cups! And the tank analogy is amazing for keeping your positivity and productivity at a high! Great work!@Andyallen
Staying hydrated and being in the sun, this is indeed very healthy for you.
What you learned and what you will do to stay healthy and avoid burnout?
I learned to recognize the symptoms of burnout and accept the situation if it happens.
To avoid burnout, I will maintain a feasible schedule and take only the responsibility that I can deliver effectively without feeling too much load. I will take self-care breaks whenever required, reflect on my behaviour, assess if I need more balance or boundaries, and reach out to a community manager if I need changes in my commitments. I do spend some time reading and exercising to maintain a healthy life in general.
@ResilientLucky
I find your answer very relatable and I'm glad you've learned from this post and are willing to reflect on it.
@ResilientLucky schedules are really important you're right :D great job
@ResilientLucky
I agree with you
@ResilientLucky
Wow, nice work! Recognizing the symptoms of a burnout are truly important for understanding your boundaries and to give yourself an opportunity for self-care! Also, by doing things you enjoy during self-care breaks and as part of your daily routine, you are taking care of yourself, which will allow you to "give it your all" in your leadership role!@Heather225
I learned about the symptoms of burnout and how to overcome them. I could relate to a few of those symptoms and that tells me that I should set boundaries for my time here. I need to organize my work and set a particular time for each task I do. Doing this would help me keep my mind stable and less prone to stressing and burning out. I feel I should take a self-care break regularly.
I also learned that having too many roles can be very overwhelming. Since I'm just starting with roles, I'll keep it in mind to stick only to the ones I'm truly passionate about and do my best in them.
Thank you so much for this post.
I learned that I have to make sure to take care of myself and remember why I am doing a certain thing. This will give me motivation and help reduce my stress, so I can be a better person in what I am doing.
@Heather225
I learned that in order to avoid burnout I need to take of myself and know when to take a break. In order to work effeciently we need to be a healthy and proper mental state.
I learned about balancing my time and that self-care is important.
I would have calming music playing while working.
Set time frames and limits for my work.
Schedule a plan with family so they know during these times and days I am busy.
For self-care, I will put the time in for meditation and mindfulness practice as well as a bedtime routine.
While working I will have healthy snacks, water and I will stop messaging for each hour for 5min but listen while doing stretches.
I will journal at the end of each working frame on what I think I did well, what I could have done better, and anything that could have upset me.
I would have a special pen and journal just for this.
Finally, I would try and create my own working space with the music, maybe some plants, oils, and crystal's or something like a vision board of my why's and where I am going/my direction.
@Cazzy8752 setting time frames is really important, well done <3
@Heather225
I've learned that I need to take more self-care breaks and set time boundaries. Sometimes I will be on checking messages for hours a day, which isn't a bad thing, but I need to moderate it. When I spend hours on end it gets harder to listen to chats as sometimes as a listener you get a couple rough chats in a row. If I start setting time boundaries per chat and time spent per day I think I would find that I'm not as sad with all the chats. This will also enable me to be the best listener I can be!
@wonderfulRainbow817 , boundaries are hard to maintain, I understand. I hope and send you best wishes to maintain healthy boundaries and stick to them!
I can take breaks when I feel tired, listen to my body and what it feels, take care of myself by slepping/eating right, and try to not take in so much pressure.
@explore1000 taking breaks when you feel the need to take one is so much important and I am glad you're going to do that!
@Heather225
Please read it through and in the replies, tell us what you learned, and what you will do to stay healthy and avoid burnout!
