Course 2: Becoming a 7 Cups Leader - (Discussion #11) Avoiding Burnout
7 Cups is founded on a community of passionate volunteers who lovingly dedicate their time to providing support.
You may face what is called burnout during your journey. You may have already faced this in your real life. Burnout is very real and must be recognized. You can't help fuel someone else when your tank is empty, after all!
To address and learn about burnout, we have created a slidedeck on how to avoid burnout.
Activity: Please read it through and in the replies, tell us what you learned, and what you will do to stay healthy and avoid burnout!
Then, please reply to 3 of your peers in this thread with encouraging or supportive words!
After completing the course quiz, please proceed to this post!
This post is brought to you by the Leadership Development Program Team, find out more information about the program here.
Please read it through and in the replies, tell us what you learned, and what you will do to stay healthy and avoid burnout!
I have learnt how important self-care is and can be. It is very important to engage in self-care as a listener. To avoid burnout, I am going to learn how to say no. I have a very hard time saying no to people and I think that needs to change so I can practice staying healthy mentally the most!
@anotherfrenchtoastmafiaa
Hey, it's great to know that you too have enrolled in LDP.
All the best in your journey ahead!
@anotherfrenchtoastmafiaa
It's great you have identified the need to say no, but I agree it's really hard to do in practice!
@Heather225
I learned that if you're starting to feel burned out (negative mood, poor performance, feeling tired, etc.) you should take a break from 7 cups or establish daily downtime from being online. The break should allow you to reflect on why you volunteer for 7 cups: because it saves lives.
From now on, I will stick to a schedule for when to take chats and have daily downtime for the rest of the day.
@lovelyParadise7651
It's a good idea to have schedule for taking chats, it's so easy to pop onto the website in any spare moment rather than doing it mindfully.
What I’ve learned: Burn out and creep up on you before you notice that you’ve taken on too many responsibilities.
What I will do: I will ensure that I am baking self-care into my routines and be mindful of my mental state.
@Dinohorus
I'm trying to make self care a non-negotiable part of my routines too, hope it works out for you =)
@Dinohorus
Great, even I am planning to include a self-care break in my routine. ❤
Please read it through and in the replies, tell us what you learned, and what you will do to stay healthy and avoid burnout!
The most important thing I learnt from this slideshow is about the difference between burnout symptoms and symptoms that precede burnout. This will allow me to take quick action if I feel any of these symptoms so I will hopefully never get as far as burnout.
I intend to be very careful about any roles I take on, making sure current roles are working well with my routine before considering adding more. This is hard for me as I always want to do more! I also have boundaries such as not taking chats on the weekend and limiting time for chats that help me to maintain a healthy relationship with the site.
@Gozzil
I totally agree about the being cautious about how many roles that you are going to take on, it's something I need to be mindful of myself 🙂 Clearly a well thought out response.
I've learnt that I need to look for the symptoms of burnout to care for myself. I think my main tell is cynicism.
To stay healthy I will avoid burnout by taking regular steps to relax such as taking long baths and reading 🙂
@Azalea98
Great answer!
@Azalea98 that was well said. I hope you'll be a healthy person in the future
@Azalea98

@Azalea98

Keep it up @Azalea98
@Azalea98
Very well said!
@Azalea98
Sounds good!
@Azalea98
It's amazing that cynicism is an indicator of burnout. It goes to show how much of an impact burnout can hav e on our world views. I think that's my main tell too! Great job figuring yours out.
@Azalea98
It is awesome that you recognize cynicism as a flag for your potential burnout. It takes a lot to be so self aware.
It seems like you really understand how to prioritize your self-care. I have learnt from you today. I hope you take care of yourself and best of luck on your LDP journey!
@Azalea98
Great response. Reading is one of my go-to as well :)
@Azalea98
I am glad you are focusing on your health!
@Azalea98, thank you for being open about cynicism. It can be a hard thing to admit at times. I think at some point in our lives we all face this, even if it is just for a moment. We see our peers gaining more cheers and we try to catch up when really we should be focused on the task at hand - being there for our members/ community members and supporting them.
@Azalea98
Well done!
@Azalea98
good answer!

@Heather225 i learned that no matter how busy we are, we need to prioritize ourselves. I'll have some me time and keep positive attitude.
@kdsyahirah

@kdsyahirah
yes, I agree!
@Heather225
Please read it through and in the replies, tell us what you learned, and what you will do to stay healthy and avoid burnout!
Well identifying the reasons is the foremost thing in addressing the issue. For me the reasons which I could relate to were:
Insomnia, forgetfulness or lack of focus, heart palpitations, loss of appetite, anger, cynicism, loss of enjoyment, pessimism, detachment, irritability
And the possible solutions could understand are - Daily downtimes ie the taking break staying away from all the work and online world for some time, breathing in, and trying to relax. It's important to articulate your boundaries. It's better to take a step back and step away till you recover rather than bring your worst to the table.
@wishfulMoment42 I hope you could take note of that.
@wishfulMoment42
Setting daily downtimes and making our boundaries clear are so important, wishful! Even if we feel like we can still go on, it's always good to take time to refuel and recharge before continuing, so we can consistently bring quality work to the table. Thank you for sharing
@wishfulMoment42
Well said, Identifying the reason is obviously the foremost step to tack to find a solution for anything
@wishfulMoment42
I agree that daily downtime would really help.
Great answer overall!

@wishfulMoment42
I learned that we can get easily get burnout because of being online for too long, and/or taking up too much commitments.
What you will do to stay healthy and avoid burnout?
Knowing my limits, setting boundaries and maintaining self-care.
@Chevy81
Setting good boundaries, especially with long-term members or regarding time spent on cups is so important! Often we might forget to take time off for ourselves, and this helps us to consistently fill up our tank. Thank you for sharing
@Heather225
you cannot help anyone if you do not help yourself. selfcare is important. i will take a break when i need to. one cannot pour from an empty cup. lets all take care of ourselves.
Love how you’ve said one cannot pour if there cups empty.. or something like that.. such a great way of putting it and well said! @wanjiku
I learned that burnout can cause us to do our jobs poorly and feel as though the work we are doing is not making any significant difference. This could cause us to become poor leaders, and negatively affect the whole team. Personally, I will make sure to set clear boundaries with members about when and how often I will be online. I will also make sure to spend time on my member account to receive support when I'm feeling down or stressed out, and make time for self-care. If I am feeling very burnt out, I will also take a break from one or two of my roles, or step down entirely to take a break.
Well said! ❤️@hopebeyondpain
