You're the President of 7 Cups for a Day! What Would You Do? 📜👑
Heya team ✨ How's it going?
Let's see who has what it takes to run 7 Cups today!
I'm sure everyone already knows Glen, our wonderful, lovely, absolutely amazing founder and CEO.
If you had the chance to sit in Glen's chair for a day, what 3 awesome things would you do to make 7 Cups even more fantastic?
From new features 🔄 to exciting events 🎊, the sky's the limit in this fun thought experiment!
Drop your ideas down below!!!
This post is brought to you by the Leadership Development Program.

@Mahad2804 ok first thing I would do 🤔🤔 is start a cupser of the month award.. And I'd get the first trophy 🏆 obviously😁
Second thing🤔🤔 every hour I'd add a cute fun appropriate to the chat group room, gif. To all the group rooms😎
And third 🤔🤔 perhaps a quarter yearly challenge. Everyone can join in on and perhaps win a badge of your in the top 3 chosen winners. Simple things like write a poem about kindness, create a piece of art about feelings, or get out in nature and take the best animal photo ❤
😁❤😁
@Tinywhisper11 add a cute appropriate fun gif* to each chat room*
@Tinywhisper11 great ideas! Here are a few questions:
-What would be the criteria for the cupser of the month award?
-like the auto-gif generator idea. I haven't yet mastered the gif game (probably a 1 on a 1-10 with 10 being great), but very much enjoy seeing them on the forums. They add so much flavor to things. How would we do this?
-and same question as first one for the quarterly award.
@GlenM don't worry I only worked out how to add gifs a few days ago😁❤
Criteria... So now I have to think, I hate thinking🤔🤔 possibly one of our leaders/forum/group supporters/listeners/members can be picked out at random every month, with the job of spotting someone who they think is someone who should be recognised for anything good on cups
Quartly challeng e that's over to you glen. You pick the winners. Keeping in mind, creativity, caring nature, trying hard. Etc.
Happy almost Easter bunny pooping chocolate eggs out day ❤😁❤
@Tinywhisper11 Happy Easter to you too! We still hide an easter basket here even tho my kids are all old. My wife is fantastic at it.
Okay, let me think on the random idea more. People put names into a hat and then maybe a random process picks a person and we celebrate them? Is that the idea?
@GlenM haaaaappppyyy easterrrrr 🐰🐰now your kids are older, you need to hide money in their Easter eggs🤑
@GlenM @Tinywhisper11
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think what Tiny meant was to pick one person at random and then this person will be tasked with spotting a person who should be celebrated. So the celebrated person isn't totally random but there is diversity in the selection due to a new person making the selection every month.
@Mahad2804 yep! That's what I meant ❤❤
@Tinywhisper11 Well that settles it then, I vote Tiny for CEO!
@PineTreeTree we can put tiny on the shortlist!
@GlenM on the short list!?!?😲😲 is that cause I'm short.... I prefer the term smurf size, thankyou very much
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@PineTreeTree yaaaay! I vote tiny too ❤😁
@Mahad2804
Hi Mahad! 😊 ❤️ Thank you for such a fun and amazing forum post! I for one love the concept of brainstorming, tossing around ideas, think tanks, etc. One never knows what greatness could come out of simple thoughts.
I say often "if you throw enough stuff against the wall, something will eventually stick" lol 😊. Even if it's just random stuff that might not quite work, someone might think it has potential if it were to be changed, tweaked and may have provided inspiration to morph into something else if you spin it differently by one of our best and brightest here on the platform. Having said that........Weeeeeeeee weeeeeeeeeeeee! 😊 and here I go......
I truly just thought of this first one last night so your post is serendipitous and makes it fun for me to share. So, a random thought was how neat would it be for us to have an Ambassador of each room? I feel as if it should be something to reach for/aspire to and not just a place to put a person.
There should be true interest in that room specifically. A room that the person has always loved being a part of, feels as if they know it best as to the purpose, function, standard operating procedures as well as a willingness to grow the room. They could see it as their "baby', their own little brain child in how to apply certain concepts and feel a bit of pride in ownership should it flourish and show proven results.
Having it flourish, showing results could lead to sharing "how they do it" with the team in an effort for these things to translate to other rooms potentially. (Train the trainer technique). Teamwork makes the dream work 😊 and we can all learn from one another.
It would be a room in which you see high involvement from them, their main focus, without their time being divided and spread all over the platform. Good to know your strengths and play to them while knowing your weaknesses and work on them little by little. Focus seems to be a hard point for many in this day in age of so much information, youtube "shorts" of only 30 seconds, scrolling and going onto the next. It could be interesting to see the energy of others properly harnessed and pointed in the right direction. I underestimate no one here!
If the heart of the home is the kitchen, then the LSR just might be our kitchen here on the platform. So very much can come from that room that influences our listener teammates in the way of knowledge, learning our culture, learning how we treat one another and that can apply all across the platform. To help a Listener is to help many, many members in turn as it has a domino effect, ripple effect....just like skimming a stone across a pond and watch how far those ripples go out.
Helping in that way in and in the right way becomes exponential. Some listeners may come to that room to learn, seek help and support, warm up before a chat or decompress after a chat. Moods are transient and the mood of the Ambassador of that room especially should not be a factor that changes on the daily. One would need someone that is consistent and consistently good as to not negatively affect the mood of others here on the platform (again, ripple affect).
Second fun thought I have had is to identify talent here on the platform and not only that but, to create a track to becoming an admin for anyone considered. It could be a one week or two week rotation for each area of the platform (I mean even working with Jon and the other devs in the back of the house) and working closely with/shadowing each leader/leaders of that area. Doing so would give the opportunity to have even more talent available if needed as well as for the prospective new admin. to have a greater understanding of the platform as a whole, how all areas are connected in a way, able to see the bigger picture. (Does great things for looking out for your "internal customer", helps for a more solid teamwork effort as well as creating a powerhouse full of knowledge with the ability to answer questions in regard to all of the areas).
Instead of listing a third idea I'd rather show tremendous gratitude for something that already happens around here. I just kind of think of it as the "catch me being good" program! 😊 No matter what your role may be here on the platform, even if you might not see @Heather225 or @GlenM , if you work hard and care about others simply for the sake of having love in your heart ❤️ they will see you!
We all "belong" to them. One of the 7 cups core values is *we believe in equality* and they both show this consistently by noticing when others are doing their very best. No badges needed, no roles required just them caring and understanding that lots of little things add up to great big things! Come one and come all! We all have our very own gifts 🎁 to bring to others.
Thank you, again Mahad for such a great forum post. I had fun sharing ideas (even if they aren't good ones) as well as giving credit where credit is due to H (Heather) and O.G. (Glen). I am most grateful! ❤️
*high fives* 😊 and *hugs* ❤️
@SparkyGizmo, these are all very interesting ideas! Thank you for sharing 🙏. Here are reactions and questions:
-I like this idea of an ambassador (or any leader I imagine?) owning a room. I think this happens in a smaller way when a person hosts a discussion in a room. You can even see this in a sharing circle, which is pretty structured, but the person's flavor or texture still comes through. Is this an accurate assessment or am I missing something? Can you share more of the benefits of a leader really owning a room vs. what I described above? What would be the downsides?
-The identifying of strong people/talent and then further developing that talent is something we can definitely do better with. As you might imagine, this is why we have the academy with the different programs. What you are suggesting here though is more broad - more nuts and bolts - how to weave people from the community into all aspects of the system. We of course do this with community moderators and others, but sounds like you are saying hey why don't we have product interns, data interns, PR interns, engineering interns etc.? Is that right? People would take a sort of career assessment and then match up their interests / skills with roles on 7 Cups that are beyond what we have identified now? Would you use the Academy structure for this or would you do it in some other manner?
-On the noticing others front, we had conceptualized this idea of a gratitude leaf that may get at what you are suggesting. If I see you doing something nice for someone else, then I could "leaf" your comment. You would be notified that I saw you doing something nice for someone and your "leaf" would then go to a bigger community tree. Leaves wouldn't be posted on profiles and I'm not sure we'd identify them on the tree. e.g., I don't know if we'd say this is Sparky's leaf or it would just be another leaf added. What do you think of this idea? and does it get at what you are conceptualizing?
@GlenM
I'm so glad that you like the ideas! 😊 ❤️ You are most welcome my friend!
Indeed, you are spot on! This is an accurate assessment with using someone hosting a sharing circle as an example but on a different scale. The person hosting that sharing circle gets to take pride and ownership of their work for that hour. The persons flavor or texture does come through.
My thoughts on having an Ambassador for each room would essentially be adding another "layer" to our leadership diagram. Each room Ambassador would need to go through our process that is already in place to become an Ambassador. Each room Ambassador would report to Obs or H.
An Ambassador could focus on one room only and mentor and develop those even further lets say for the example of the sharing circle and "hosts" as a benefit (specific needs/function of the room). Other benefits could be pride in "ownership" of outcomes, responsibility for outcomes, greater connectedness, relationship building, community building, having their "finger on the pulse" of what happens in the room and on a day to day basis. This would allow the Ambassador to notice trends, needs, etc. that might need to be addressed and within a shorter time frame and taking a hands on approach could allow for things to be noticed that could have potentially "flown under the radar" prior. (This is how focusing on one room would help).
Any hosts or mentors that like to work within the Ambassadors room of focus could have faster access to help, support, mentoring, best practices, with the Ambassador being able to take a more hands on approach, everyone having a "go to person" for that room as this would be the Ambassadors niche' or forte'.
Everyone really should have their very own mentor. An Ambassador that is deeply involved in "room specific" could mentor also based on the needs of everyone for that room to work in tandem.
The downside....biggest one could be if the Ambassador ends up not being the right "fit" for the task. If the Ambassador themselves are creating conflict where none was there originally. Working this closely with others truly would require each Ambassador to show another core value *high warmth and high expectations*. If someone were to be put in the role and not the right fit, it could lower room involvement or even cause users to leave the platform.
I'm really glad that you asked me these questions. Sometimes in answering we can come to the conclusion that maybe it wasn't the greatest idea when doing a "risk versus benefit analysis". Sometimes "one bad apple can ruin the whole bunch" and I have seen that before here on the platform with people essentially living in a room for 12-14 hours straight (7 days a week) for years. Certainly not a healthy decision for anyone. That can kind of be when people take things a bit too far.
It can become "them cups" instead of "7 cups" and many can choose avoidance and no longer go to that room in an effort to avoid conflict. I guess there can be "pride in ownership" with helpful behaviors and developing people or feelings of ownership, becoming territorial if one has an autonomous leadership style and might not be in the best of moods.
For the next one....Great question! I think modeling it after the Academy could be amazing! Taking the "tour" 😊. I have never been through academy training however, people that graduate from those classes most times come out with a new mind set and one that is in allignment to what we all hope for across the platform.
For the third...I was simply being happy and grateful for what already is ❤️ . I like this "leaf" idea though 😊 Why not put it on someones profile page? Maybe a little leaf next to their user name that can be seen as one travels all across the site? One could wear it proudly for an entire month, 30 full days? Why not put it on a tree with the persons name on it? Maybe put a permanent "leaf" on the forum post that you liked as your seal of approval? Maybe leaves could be different than the "tulip badge". You can only get the tulip badge once. Maybe leaves on your profile page could be lifetime achievements.
Oh my gosh, that's it! Leaves on your profile page......unlimited......wooooooo hoooooooo! 😊 What do you think about a "leaf" on your profile page, in the badge area? The leaf could have a "G" on it for Glen or an "H" on it for Heather to signify who the gift came from and who caught you doing good things for others? They stay there, in all perpetuity. No maximum limit. One just needs to be "caught" lol 🤭
Thank you for brainstorming with me! This was fun!
*high fives* 😊 and *hugs* ❤️
@SparkyGizmo in general I love the idea of people owning parts of 7 cups, especially corners, squares or nooks. You bring up some good contrarian points on how it might not be as helpful as we are imagining. It can be helpful to think of how doable something is to set someone up for success. eg, if a coach was like okay Glen you've got to run a 5 minute mile, but i can only run a 7 minute mile, then it might be too much of an ask. And if the coach was to say you have to run a 3 minute mile, then it'd be impossible for me and everyone else (at least at present, but maybe not for long). I think if we keep opportunities inline with what can reasonably be expected and people want to do it, then it makes sense. Finding that balance can be tricky.
Really glad you like the leaf idea. There is some research to suggest that gratitude that gets tied to social signaling is less powerful for the person giving and receiving. e.g., you donate a bunch of money to a charity and they name a building after you "Sparky Hall" might be less powerful than an anonymous donation. I like the idea of it being time-limited tho or maybe the username on the leaf on the tree. That could work!
@GlenM
What a great response! 😊 ❤️ I am someone that really does enjoy analogies! It really does help for "teachable moments", bringing a thought back around to something that might be a bit more easily understood, understanding the deeper meaning.
In an effort to reflect back and to see if I understood the deeper meaning...maybe some of it could be like....Giz, I asked for you to think, and think you did. I asked for you to present to me the downside as well as additional positives/gains. Well done on bringing up potential "contrarian points" for an idea (very own devils advocate). However, be careful to not talk yourself out of a potentially very good idea based on the limitations of a select few. Others may be able to rise to the occasion, find the proper balance.
No reason to "throw the baby out with the bath water". This could be a great opportunity and not behaving in the negative way that you mentioned would be a reasonable expectation. If someone were to want to do this with reasonable expectations, then it makes complete sense and is quite doable.
I'm hoping I didn't miss the mark on this one. I hope I understood correctly. 😊
On the topic of gratitude and social signaling (the way that you framed it up)....I could not agree with you more! For me, in real life, this is what 7 cups refers to as "lived experience". For me, in real life, I may have found many opportunities to do good deeds for others. Also, while doing those good deeds I have remained completely anonymous when possible, no virtue signaling, no social signaling. No thanks needed. You do what it is that you should do, are moved to do, what is important to you, what it is that you are able to do and with knowledge comes responsibility (am I able to help, can I share with others without seeking something, anything for doing so?).
It's even good to not repeat what it is that you may have done to anyone else, ever. I have no need to engage in "virtue signaling" to anyone else for potential past good deeds. I sooooooooooo get you, kind of ruins the moment. As a human being, if one wants to broadcast a good deed then self awareness should kick in and one should question why is that they did that deed in the first place? Was it to truly help or for self aggrandizement, attention seeking?
I was thinking of the "leaf" in a different way. While I take a very humanistic approach to being here on the platform, I have to understand that this place can be a "different animal" from time to time.
I remember reading about a study done that was based on sales and positive responses. With all of the participants being the same, the first round was something like....the worst performer of the month will have to take this goat home for a weekend and take care of it. Numbers were crunched, quantifying, results logged.
With the same participants, the second round was....for the highest performer (results driven, based on numbers) your mother will be receiving a phone call to tell them of how fantastic you are, that you are dedicated, that you are a great asset. Of course, one guess as to which time sales sky rocketed. 😊
So, having said that, many times being a manager, a mentor, etc. can be likened to parenting. Being the giver of all things good (the power to reward) while also taking a thoughtful approach to "hem" them back in and provide constructive feedback in a loving way. To be effective, you have to provide both or people just stop listening to you as people are smart. They know they aren't all bad.
If you stop caring about what those that lead you think about you, there is something that has gone very wrong. Thinks once again about H's forum post about "trust in leadership". As for me, I would be grateful for a "leaf" with a G on it or an H on it on my profile page. I don't think it takes away from the "giving" aspect on this platform but instead, amplifies it.
I have empathy for all of us and something that was a bit heartbreaking was to read that you felt better about having that "streak" put in place. I can certainly understand why that made you feel better. I really do! However, the reasoning, how others are "taking your inventory", thinking that you aren't here when you truly are because they lack understanding of how much it might take to keep this place up and operating, well........it says more about them than it does about you. Once again....sometimes our work is like the wind.....you can't see it, touch it, taste it, trap it however....you just know that it exists based on after effects.
If you'd like to give a leaf, shows that you are here and that you noticed goodness! It's a beautiful moment for someone to "see you".❤️
*high fives* 😊 and *hugs* ❤️
@SparkyGizmo
Sparky, I can safely say that you are one of, if not the most intellectually invested people in the growth and development of 7 Cups!
I see so many of your responses on such brainstorming posts and it's never a dull read. Great ideas, well thought out and eloquently put. The amount of brainpower you put into this stuff is astoundingly admirable.
I love all these ideas and I think they're all worth at least some serious consideration!
Kudos to you for dedicating all this time and energy to Cups 💖 you're an inspiration for us all!
@Mahad2804
I really cannot thank you enough Mahad! 😊❤️ Truly a moment that stops you in your tracks for sure! It's a moment that makes you stop, sit in the moment, wipe away a few tears and just breath. That was very powerful my sweet friend! ❤️
Thank you for seeing the value in me! Thank you for noticing my efforts! Thank you for "seeing me"❤️ . I say many times around here that I know I'm not special and that I know I'm not great but, that I simply care and that I try hard. Thank you for letting me know that I'm enough! That it's okay to be me and to just try and help if I feel that I might be able to and when asked!
It amazing that you have noticed other threads that I have been a part of with helpful efforts. Again, thank you for noticing my body of work here on the platform and that I truly have the best of intentions. You really have no idea how great it feels to be warmly received for trying! I assure you, I am the smallest of these here on the site. I'm not in the of the category of the best and brightest however, it's a great feeling to be able to support the efforts of those that are!
I'll tell you a secret 😊. Glen presented an analogy above. In an effort to be kind to myself as well, I read it for the first time late at night and so wasn't quite so sure If I understood. I decided to "cut myself a break" and revisit it the next day. Next day....I think I got it....not quite sure. Lets check 😊
Aha! 💡Will use trained active listening skills to reflect back to see if I understood? The way I see things, I either understood or I didn't. I win either way.
Sometimes the first step to receiving an education is to admit ones ignorance. Admit that I don't understand, that I don't know it all and let everyone see it here on the platform (courage). That it's okay to not understand everything. That I have the courage to try but to also not understand. And that it's all going to be okay. I am amongst friends. At the very least, I tried. At the very least I showed knowledge of trained active listening skills.
Thank goodness I did! I seem to have understood the meaning. I got a compassion heart from Glen (upvote...strong signifier of "good catch Gizzie") as well as having this beautiful moment here with you!
That moment did take a bit of "mental gymnastics" for a second, a moment of questioning myself, questioning my thought process. I'm so very grateful for you, I'm so very glad that you are here on the platform and thank you for all that you do! Thank you again for giving me a positive affirmation today.
I have what I call "gratitude moments" each and every day. I will be counting you in them!
*high fives* 😊 and big *hugs* ❤️
@Mahad2804 thank you for your kind words! And love this idea. Looking very forward to reading and responding to the comments. I'm all ears and fully believe in the intelligence and heart of this community to identify and help figure out ways we can do better. Thank you, Mahad!
@Mahad2804
I would make the leadership paperwork combined into one, so that steps are not as difficult to follow. I would also make it easier to find each area of leadership, like Cookieland. I also would try to make sure everyone in starting out as new leadership was able understand the system sooner and better. I would have ways for everyone who wants to help in someway, be able to find a place to help and be successful in their leadership position. I think most things are fantastic and do not need change.
@4Jasmine tagging in @hope here for insights. I like all of this. Almost like a sort of leadership center or GPS to help navigate things as a leader. Any specific recommendations?
@4Jasmine
Thank you for the tag. @4Jasmine can you elaborate on what you mean by combining it into one?
@Hope
Yes, there are two papers that list leadership requirements, but due to being divided into two separate papers with requirements that must occur in between each other. I didn't really recognize that some of the things on leadership paper 2 had to occur after completing certain courses. So I stuck to following one paper and then was going to do what was on leadership paper two. I found out that it didn't work that way and was blessed with a mentor, WeEarth to let me know that I had to do something on page 2 before moving on with leadership paper courses 1. I thought that combining the two so that the steps were clearly listed in order would have been very helpful to me. I am still trying to get things sorted out now that I am helping in a small leadership role. I know that every role is important, but with dyslexia and other handicaps, what seems easy to understand and do is monumental to me. I just thought that there are others that might need things easier to follow and to understand in order to participate. My heart is pure in my desire to participate and help, but I am far from perfect or able to catch on easily.
Heya @4Jasmine
Those are some great ideas! Here's some stuff though that I think might already be in place for those purposes.
First off, for an easier understanding of leadership roles and opportunities, we have the Leadership Opportunities page (Listener only. Here's the member roles list) that lists and details all domains, tiers, tracks, and leadership roles available. It's a great resource for getting to know the leadership structure and picking out a suitable role for yourself.
Secondly, we have the Rising Star program which is designed to identify talent in users and match them up with well-suited leadership roles. They can help with completing eligibility requirements, application, and onboarding.
Is this how you pictured those ideas to be implemented? Are there any improvements or changes you'd like to propose to these resources/initiatives?
@Mahad2804
Yes, some of those are some of what I was thinking about. I honestly, I had a lot of trouble combining the two leadership sheets to coordinate things step by step. I was lost trying to figure out what to do, when! If it hadn't been for WeEarth, I would have missed doing a bunch of things. Also, for people like me with visual dyslexia other physical handicaps, made doing things difficult. I have a big, willing heart, but had to struggle extra hard to do what seemed so simple for others. It frustrated me, and left me feeling like I was failing to do what is expected of me, no matter how hard I tried. I'd like to see things made easier for people like me who want to get involved, help and really care!
@Mahad2804 Hey, 7cups team! I'm feeling inspired and ready to innovate. It’s always a thrill to brainstorm with such bright minds! 🌟
Reflecting on our mission and learning from the Mashable article about 7 Cups’ experience with the CalMHSA, here are three initiatives I'd put my energy into:
1. Building on our commitment to users' wellbeing:
a) I will create a mechanism or Rule of Thumb that Their National ID must be verified for each Listener Account, and there should be a very small fee paid through a credit card by an Adult to make sure that the National ID is valid and nobody is impersonating anyone.
b) I'd prioritize the development of an advanced safety and monitoring system. This initiative would draw from past challenges, employ AI to support human oversight and ensure a safe and supportive environment, particularly for our younger members.
2. Given the confidentiality challenges faced in the California Tech Suite project, I'd champion transparency. By publishing clear reports on platform operations and safety measures, we'd nurture trust within our community and with our partners.
3. I'd introduce a community forum for users to suggest and vote on new features and improvements. This aligns with the understanding that our users are our greatest asset, and their input is invaluable in making 7 Cups a haven for those seeking support.
These initiatives, inspired by past lessons and future aspirations, would reinforce 7 Cups’ foundation as a beacon of trust and support in the mental health community.
What do you think, team? Would you be ready to make these ideas a reality? 🚀
Drop your thoughts, and let's get this conversation going! 🗨️✨
@WeEarth @Skansly @rubyjane00 @GoldenRuleJG @azuladragon34 @Kristynsmama @Yourbuddy30 @Mahad2804 @Pumpkin @yourbuddy30 @Hope @DreamTouch @positivePumpkin22 @Bella20 @JustSophia @lovingAngel2307 @TheOnlyChresser @Renjik8013 @CatHanderOutNoah @daydreammemories @Rainboho @Brightlynx1428 @GlenM
@FeureVox
I am sure your ideas reflect your aim to improve our community's safety, well being, transparency engagement, etc. Thank you my friend for the tag. Please remember that I am just stating my viewpoints, they may differ from others.
- National ID Verification is a good idea, it may stop unwanted spamming accounts and ensure the safety and trust between the members. But, we should also consider privacy and there might be people who don't have access to credit cards or are not able to pay fees. I think the current model of 7 Cups verification is the best as I think members' and listeners' mobile numbers are being verified. But, I would like to add a little change in the members' verification as mobile number is only requested after sometime of account creation, not when the account is created. ID verification is needed when the listener wants to become an ATL.
- Usage of AI is a good idea, but it may have challenges. Sometimes AI might not be able to detect human feelings and emotions. Maybe if we can train the model by taking care of most of the aspects, then it would be a great idea.
- Regarding the community forum, I think we have forms to suggest our ideas and I think @GlenM and @Heather225 post the updates and suggestions through forum posts. Yes, it would be a good idea if we have a dedicated community for the same. But I understand that, there might be some complications too.
Once again thank you for the tag and I am excited to see all your dedicated ideas to improving our 7 Cups family💓
@WeEarth thanks for your thoughts here! I share your concerns about asking folks to pay. And, yes, I'm very hopeful on the AI elements. More to come on this front soon!
@FeureVox hey there! I need to hop on another call in just a moment, but wanted to quickly respond here. We just recently updated our safety fact sheet, which you can find here: https://www.7cups.com/Documents/SafetyFactsheet/. Let me know what you think when you get a chance. Also, as @weearth mentioned below, I think we have official channels for helping to gather info from community members on what to build, but do not think we have a voting mechanism. That could be interesting!
@GlenM
Thank you for sharing the link.
@GlenM Thank you for sharing the updated safety fact sheet; it's great to see 7 Cups continuously refining its safety approach. I've reviewed it, and the following are my thoughts.
Hi Mahad
Great question and scope for thought :)
What I would try to do - I’m not sure because what if vision keeps changing and changing - I know one I’m certain of 👍
- Languages room of individuals foreign language be it Spanish or German and have the person monitoring be fluent in those languages
@GoldenRuleJG yess that would be great :) but I don't think it could be 24/7 there's not enough interest, but perhaps for a few hours each day, not sure! Would def be great to have though!!
yeah I do feel bad having to tell someone to communicate in English when thats the language they are least comfortable in or is not their native tongue - p.s. I don’t speak Spanish or German - examples :)
@GoldenRuleJG ¿hablas español y alemán?
Je parle petit francias non espanol - sorry to anyone I’ve butchered this
I speak a bit of french
As president of 7 cups for a day, my first act will be to resign, but I will expect Human Resources to cut me a check equal to one day of Glen’s pay. Thank you to all the little people that made this possible and for all your support. *takes a bow* 😂
A day is not very long to be president (lol), but assuming I had a magical endless day to offer leadership and support, here is what I might address:
- The most common feedback I hear from people involved in this site is that dealing with those trying to use the site inappropriately is frustrating and a deterrent to being here – on both the member and the listener side. So, I believe we need to explore how we might more fully respond to this concern while still maintaining the values of the site. I think it would be worth exploring starting a community-based initiative that focuses on dealing proactively (and coping) with such people. I would make sure this involved both members and listeners directly, so that everyone could feel more empowered and involved in responding to this ongoing challenge.
One aspect of it could involve, on the member side, is making people choose their own usernames – ones with which they could develop a more recognizable identity for themselves (positive or negative). My hope would be that this would encourage the development of a stronger interpersonal community.
It also, in turn, would help support the next part of the plan, which would be to allow pm’s from member to member. I realize that this would increase vulnerability, but it also could strengthen: allow members to build strong bonds with one another that would help build a community of stronger interpersonal support. As we know, people crave community and connection. Currently, if they want to develop close interpersonal bonds, the structure of this site encourages them to go elsewhere to do it.
We could, at the same time, begin to establish a new culture, site-wide, of responding in a single, simple way to outlying individuals while supporting one another in doing so. We could make the very first thing anyone sees in joining a simple (maybe two point?) statement - one that every single person could easily repeat and witness that reinforces the consistency with which we respond to disrespect. Then, perhaps we create a signal word of sorts – a word that could indicate someone’s refusal to participate in what they feel to be a disrespectful interaction, and signal those around them to come to their support (at least in a group setting). I’d envision that consistent refusal to respond to perceived disrespect would result two main things: 1. reveal that that perception is not consistent, essentially allowing continued participation- perhaps with some behavior changes that help 2. If people consistently refused to interact, that would effectively end this person’s ability to engage. That would be a pretty big deterrent to returning, I’d think.
The signal could be something silly. “Platypus”? And then refusal to respond any further. Something like that. It wouldn’t have to involve any mods or forms or potential bots (though it certainly could). The community could support each other and govern itself to some degree. Checks and balances would be built-in. People would hopefully feel more empowered to respond proactively, and to see that others have the power to do the same. There could be support from individual friends whose bonds have been reinforced in private. Doing these things doesn’t mean letting go of an already-robust system of reporting etc. It simply means more members of the community could feel empowered to act.
These are just ideas – they’d need to be researched and further explored. I also think it would be important to get suggestions and feedback from members, listeners, and leaders from across the community. But perhaps these thoughts might be a place to start?
- I would assess the needs, status, and desires of the community (as a whole, and each of its various parts). In cooperation with others, I’d want to create clear measurement tools as well as subjective surveys. I would enlist the help of those with experience and passion, identify leaders within the group, and let them run with it! I would want to ask people for feedback, use the group rooms, forums, sub-communities, notifications, etc. to get as many people to participate in the effort as possible. Leadership is only as good as those who follow. If we figure out clearly what people need and want, where we stand, and where we need to go in relation, then it’s much easier to get where we want to go.
- I would wave a magic wand and create a search engine for the entire site!
- I would enlist the help of others to assess, and potentially create, new ways of communicating the information that our current system of badges, stars, etc. encompasses. It is valuable information we are trying to document and communicate, and wonderful things we are trying to encourage in volunteers. I know these things are also common cultural touchstones. The challenge, I think, is that the amount of information contained in these multiple little indicators, and icons can get overwhelming – or at least this is the informal feedback I often hear. Our points and purposes may be getting lost in the shuffle. Perhaps we could assess whether this is, in fact, true, and then respond appropriately. Would it be helpful to try to communicate the same information in a different, simplified way? Our intentions are certainly worthy. Let’s make sure everyone understands what we are trying to say!

Great post!!! :):) everyone's ideas here are really amazing! just some other smaller things (some of this might just be me doing something the wrong way so I apologise in advance haha)
- Noni: When members use Noni to request a chat, the bot asks the member questions "while you wait," saying it will pass this on to the listener. The listener does *not* receive this. Before I knew that I would type up a long message in the Noni chat, thinking it will be passed on to the listener, or that it was necessary to fill it out in order to chat with a listener, and expecting them to know a bit about it when they take the chat, when really I have to say it all over again. Maybe if nothing gets shared with the listener, Noni can ask you to note some ideas (change the wording to make it clear that is optional and not shared w listener) or have some calming activities / something to read / direct you to SR, or nothing at all.
- Why isn't there a Noni dropdown for members similar to listeners but with a more relevant list? Like a mini sitemap of sorts, or, following on from that it would be really good to have a GPS / sitemap of sorts (not really sure how this would work, but I believe a similar idea was mentioned earlier in the comments)
- How do you find the training self-help guides as a member?
- Maybe somehow some activities on here (noni, growth path, waypoints, anything like that) could be tailored to how the member is feeling (sort of like how the app Finch has some activities under a "first aid" button) -- so if you're currently anxious it gives you breathing or grounding techniques or writing prompts / or suggests resources, something like that.
- Just a small thing, the member chat requests list (as a listener) can say the wait time is only two minutes or less when really if you check the oldest request could be more than an hour 😮 so I'm not sure where that number comes from :)
- Maybe an automated message that can be set up by a listener on a short break to be sent to any members who message them, if don't want to deactivate account, and including in that message another listener friend to refer to?? Not sure about this one.
- Somehow something to do with people's messages being missed in SR if want support??
- Also working on the reasons people quit?
- And ofc trying to keep 7cups going forever :'):)
Thank you so much for this post, it really makes you think and its lovely to see so many people working on ideas! :):):)
(P.S. here's my vote for Tiny as awardee!!! hehehe you deserve it @Tinywhisper11)
@snugglesnow oh also, perhaps when a member requests a chat, to (optional) be able to pick language preference/s, since sometimes if a member requests a chat where their screen language is not English, you can see that in the request list but don't always know if they would be comfortable having the chat in English or not :) not sure, of course its easy to just ask, but I just feel like it would be more helpful to know their preference rather than their screen settings language.
@snugglesnow awwww ❤❤ you are so sweet ❤❤ thankyou, gives you a giant tiny hug ❤
@snugglesnow @Mahad2804 Also just to add on to the sitemap thing, making it easier to find all the resources would be really good. Noni is completely no use if you want to find a page like peer support and lots of other resources, and I ended up finding them only recently through @ASilentObserver 's profile😅 all the google documents - the chat support faqs, new listener links, all that, and the crisis support pages etc. are not super straightforward to find unless referred from TL.
I think that would be really helpful, to have all the resources that those available for listeners, to be easy to find, as well as all relevant ones also available to members. I think it is really good that the report button has been added under the profile dropdown, so anything like that would work :)
(unless there is a way of finding all this stuff that I am unaware of haha)

hii, just adding something else to this. If a member requests a chat and waits for a listener for a long time, but then has to leave and can't chat before the request is even picked up, perhaps it would be good for them to be able to mark their request as offline or something - not to remove it because they may still need support - but just to sort the ghost chats and offline chats from the live ones I guess :) not absolutely necessary though, it still works pretty well how it is at the moment :)
@Mahad2804 I love cups but their there's so many things that could be improve with that being said such as more things with disabilities more monitoring in chats and things like that
