Course 3, Discussion 4: One Key Metric
It is pretty easy to get knocked off track in life. One way to stay on track is to have a core metric that guides you. If you have a north star that you are working towards, then you know how well you are doing. It is harder to be in denial or to participate in activities that are less helpful in meeting that goal.
There are 2 parts to this discussion.
✒️ Work with your team or mentor and identify the key metric you are hoping to help move. Post daily (or the cadence that makes sense) in the 3 key things thread to highlight what you are doing to help us move 7 Cups forward. Please post here why this goal of choosing a single metric is important. Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well.
✒️ (TW: themes that deal with death) Read chapter 12 of our Searching Soul book and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you. What you imagine them telling you is your compass. If you are acting in a way that is consistent with what they are saying, then it is very likely that you will end up living a meaningful life. Remember to listen to and follow this compass so as not to be distracted by the clock.
✒️ Please reply to at least 1 of your peers in this thread with encouraging or supportive words!

It is important to choose a single metric that can bring long-term success. After identifying this metric, it should help align you toward the right strategy to achieve this success. You can apply this to your professional and personal life. For example, in my personal life, I would like to be remembered as a great mother. Therefore, I need to do things that will help me achieve this goal.

I'm not ready to complete this exercise.
@LovelyKittyCat
Beautifully said! Thank you for sharing. Good luck to you on your LDP journey. Happy learning.
I think they might say I was a loving family woman who lived a full life travelling and enjoyed a career in teaching and felt the saying ‘do a job you love and never work a day in your life’ . I found this exercise moving to do.
I find it so important to utilize all techniques to help me stay focused on my goals. This helps me to better meet the needs of members and other listeners. I also realize how important it is to maintain open communication on a group and individual basis.
I read the chapter and found it quite moving, I think people would say I was a caring and giving person who valued family.

Maintaining open communication on a group and individual basis is very important, and I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter!😊

Choosing a single metric is crucial because it provides a clear focus for driving progress and making measurable improvements. For 7 Cups, this goal helps streamline efforts and ensures the entire team aligns their strategies toward achieving a common objective, ultimately leading to more impactful outcomes for users and the platform.
Professionally, focusing on a single metric prevents dilution of efforts and helps track success more effectively, enabling better decision-making and resource allocation. Personally, it teaches discipline and clarity, helping me prioritize what truly matters in achieving my goals, whether in work, relationships, or personal growth. This approach fosters a sense of accomplishment and measurable progress in all areas of life.

I have done it but I am not comfortable with sharing it. I hope you understand.

I am a part of the Peer Support team and I often help out in the Listener Support Room. It's important to identify and choose a single metric because it provides clarity in regard to goal-setting, and it makes it easier to understand the type of service that is to be offered.

I found the exercise hauntingly thought-provoking. I'll choose not to disclose my answers for personal reasons.
@PeacefulOnes
Thanks for your work. (:
I’m part of the Anonymous Evaluations team; we work to help ensure Listener quality on 7 Cups. It’s important that we’re checking the quality of our listeners here so that the members can receive the best support possible. It reminds me to observe myself and think (not too long) before I take any action.
Pass for #2.

How do I find out who my "team" and "mentors" are?

Please post here why this goal of choosing a single metric is important. Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well. One of the three things is this Leadership development Program. I really do enjoy helping others and I also understand the importance in doing it safely. I'm hoping the things I learn from the personal enrichment courses will also benefit the people I try to help off of 7 cups.

Remember to listen to and follow this compass so as not to be distracted by the clock. I picture them saying that I was authentic to myself and that it inspired and encouraged them to live their own lives authentically for themselves.
Thank you for sharing! I appreciate how your chosen metric ties into your passion for helping others while emphasizing safety—it’s such a crucial aspect of the work we do here on 7 Cups. It’s inspiring that you’re also focusing on applying what you learn from the personal enrichment courses both on and off the platform. That shows how deeply committed you are to growing and making a positive impact.
I also love what you wrote about authenticity. Picturing people being inspired by your genuine approach is such a powerful compass to guide your actions. It’s a reminder that being true to ourselves has a ripple effect, encouraging others to do the same. Thank you for sharing this—it’s inspiring and such a great perspective!
The key metric I’ve chosen to focus on, with guidance from my mentor, is increasing the number of meaningful conversations across 7 Cups. This metric directly aligns with the platform’s mission of providing emotional support and creating a sense of connection for members. To help move this forward, I’ll regularly contribute to the "3 Key Things" thread, sharing what I’m doing to foster these connections. This might include tips for active listening, encouraging other Listeners to engage deeply, or even highlighting positive stories that inspire participation.
Focusing on a single metric is so important because it brings clarity and purpose to my efforts. Professionally, it keeps me accountable and ensures my time is spent on tasks that align with a larger goal. Personally, it resonates with my values of empathy and connection, reminding me to show up intentionally and consistently. Knowing that my efforts contribute to meaningful change—both for individuals and the platform—makes the work deeply fulfilling.
After reflecting on Chapter 12 of Searching Soul, I imagined people at the end of my life saying that I lived with compassion, authenticity, and a genuine desire to connect with and support others. They’d say I inspired others to embrace themselves fully and left a legacy of kindness and creativity. This exercise helped me realize that what matters most to me is building relationships, making an impact, and staying true to my values. It’s a powerful reminder to let this vision guide my actions and not get distracted by less meaningful pursuits.
The reason that choosing a single metric is so important is because it helps to give more direct focus to organisational improvement in a way that can be measured. For example at work, having that clarity of focus helps to set goals and maintain accountability, once these goals have been achieved as demonstrated through a defined measurement, it boosts morale and future productivity. For me, I feel that it helps to orientate my life and stay on the path that centres around my values. It makes the relationships I form more intentional.
Participating in the exercise I imagine people commenting on my drive to help others, my love of learning and the care and love I have for my family. Reflecting in this way does help to remind me of my priorities, that the work I do here, and the work I do at home raising my son should always come first even though I might strive to constantly do more around that. Keeping this focus will help me to set more specific goals that are both achievable and in line with my true values.
