Course 3, Discussion 3: When you don't get the role you want

Hello, students! Let's talk leadership!

Many of you have or will apply for certain roles that interest you! And some times we get it and some times we don't! It can be difficult to find out that we didn't get the role, but we can control how we react to it.

Here are some DOs and DON'Ts:

- DO talk to the leader of the role that you applied for and get some input on what you can/need to do in order to get the role next time! Be aware though most leaders of these roles are busy so give it some time!

- DON'T bring the issue into the support rooms. If you are upset, talking to a peer supporter about how you are feeling is ok!

- DO take some self-care, self-care is good for any occasion but its best to deal with those feelings of failure or disappointment outside of 7 cups, things like going on your member account can be so helpful to overcome some of these feelings

- DON'T think that you are obligated to stay on 7 cups right after finding out bad news, especially if you are in LSR/TL and you see other listeners who have gotten the role that you wanted! It can be hard to deal with and it can cause unneeded jealousy or hurt on your part! Not everyone is like this but if you think that this is a possibility that you can think this way staying away might be a great option!

- DON'T take it personally, everyone is ready at different times. It can be hard for us to realize this but just because someone got the role and they might have been here in less or the same amount of time doesn't mean that you personally are ready! Everyone grows and accomplishes things at different times!

- DO get a mentor, in general its a good idea to get a mentor but for things like your goals on 7 cups mentors can be great and helpful! They can give you feedback, do mock chats with you, and overall help you with your goals as I said before!

- DON'T think you have to apply for every role and every team out there! There is time you don't have to apply for everything! Its super easy to burnout that way, and that can lead to more "rejection" and hurt that none of us want!

*Never let not getting a role the first time discourage you! You will be told when you can apply again and use the feedback that you get to better yourself when you can/decide that you are ready to! practice makes perfect none for us are perfect and no one will ever be! Its a good thing to remember no matter your role as a listener your help is greatly appreciated and you are still helping so many people!*

Hello [Leader’s user/name]! Thank you for considering my application for [role]. I have just one question: what would you recommend I work on so that I can increase my chances of attaining this role (or other roles) in the future? Again, thank you, and I will focus on personal improvement moving forward.

@EventHorizons

Perfectly written! This is exactly what I would do. Ask how you can improve.

Don't take it personal. Ask how you can improve and work your way up. Request constructive criticism for improvement purposes.

In this situation you should try to respond as politely as you can, it's okay to express disappointment but try to remember that rejection is an opportunity to learn and be grateful for the experience. It would be a good idea to ask for feedback on how to improve for future applications or speak with a mentor to help guide you forward.

I would tell any leader that I appreciated their time in reviewing my application and that I will take a short self care break but would appreciate any feedback when they have the time to provide it.

Hi leader
Thank you for getting back to me regarding my application. Although I'm a bit sad about not getting the position I applied for, I understand that there will be multiple opportunities in the future where I can try out again. Can you kindly let me know in which ways I can improve my performance so that i can do better next time?

I think this is a great response Snow, I like how you included your feelings about the decision. I think it is important to not fake our feelings to remain authentic- I also expressed my disappointment in my reaction message too.

✒️Question: If you find out you were not given a role, how should you respond? What would you say to the leader who has informed you?
If I find out that I'm not given a role, my first response will be to remind myself that it's not personal and it doesn't mean I will never get the role. I would take some time off 7 cups to do some self care like painting, reading, or calling a friend. Then, when I was ready, I would reach out to an appropriate peer supporter to vent and mentor to get some guidance before applying again. I wouldn't discuss any of this in any chatroom as that is not appropriate nor professional.

Here is what I might say to the leader who informed me:
Hi, thanks for letting me know, I'm pretty disappointed. I am going to take some time to take care of myself, but when you get a chance, are you able to tell me what I would need to do to be successful on my next application? What areas do I need to improve? Also, when would I be allowed to apply again?
Thanks again for informing me & I hope I will be ready for the role the next time that I apply.

@FrenchToast

Dear Sunrise7, I see that I was not accepted in the mentorship program. Although I am disappointed, please let me know what I can do improve in order to be a successful mentor in the future. Thank you!

Hi,

Thank you for your response. I wanted some feedback on why I didn't get the role to understand how I can improve and hopefully try again for a leadership role that is best suited for me.

Have a great day

Best,

Charming

I will just thank them and then will stay away from 7 cups for some time. Then I will try to improve them.

Hi,

Thank you for letting me know, I know it's a difficult job to tell applicants, so I really appreciate it. 💙

While I am disappointed with the outcome as I was very invested, I'm also incredibly grateful for the opportunity and I will apply again when the opportunity opens up in the future. :)

May I ask for feedback so I can improve?

Thank you for your consideration and time,

Marina

@MarinaLexi I really loved the tone of your approach, and it made me see that you tried not to take it to heart. I also could see the positivity and optimism, great job <3
