Course 2, Discussion 1: Understanding your Leadership Style

Hope December 5th, 2022

Hello everyone,

If you are reading this, it means you have come a long way in your leadership training. Kudos to you for all the effort and resilience you have shown! It is amazing how you all are open to learning and adapting to new environments: the environment of leadership!

Before we zoom in and talk more about learning and adapting, lets zoom back out first and talk about how you feel about leadership. Regardless of how you see yourself, there is a leader within you. The one who visualizes how things could have run in a better way if you were in the leading spot. Leading spot here means:

  • A desire for change

  • Believing you got the abilities to make it happen

  • Visualizing success while keeping in mind the bigger picture.

Lets take a look at the leadership styles as proposed by Daniel Goleman

Your original style could be any of them. So for the purpose of this course, we are going to use a leadership style test to help you identify your core competencies. In brief, we are using the test here to help you identify your leadership approach. So, when you know how you approach an event, you could think and put efforts to bring a change in it. It will allow you to polish your strengths and focus to improve in other different areas as well.

Let's get started!

WillingToHelpU October 7th

I scored the highest as both a visionary and coaching leader. I feel this fits me well, as I do invest in long-term development and continually support people I work with (coaching), and also provide direction and vision to best support the group and organization (visionary).

@Hope

I scored the highest as having an affiliative leadership style. Overall, I think the quiz reflected my personality, in accordance with the various leadership styles accurately, as I would say that I prioritize developing bonds with others and believe in recognition and reward where applicable. Following affiliative, I was tied with visionary and democratic, which indicate that I consider and provide long-term guidance, as well as value team participation and input.

@Hope I scored the highest for ‘affiliative’ leadership style. I’m motivating during tough times, helps resolve conflict and strengthens connections.

I do agree with this since I try to reward my group members through out tasks by simple factors such as praising and positive feed back.
Tracey12345 October 13th

I scored the highest in Visionary and yes I agree with this test.

Maebyb October 20th

I scored highest in the Coaching and Affiliative styles. I do agree with this because I feel strongly in helping all group members to feel involved, grow and be involved in the decisions and revisions.

PeacefulOnes November 6th

1. I scored highest on the Affiliative leadership style. 32/35.

2. I do agree with it. Prior to taking the test, I thought that Democratic or Affiliative resembled my leadership style the most. I like the emphasis on participatory decision-making, empathy, positive reinforcement, and fostering a team spirit.

@Hope

My leadership skills is democratic leadership.

Democratic leadership, also known as participative leadership, is a style in which l actively involve team members in decision-making processes. In this approach, the leader encourages open communication, values team members' ideas and opinions, and considers group input before making decisions. Though the leader retains final decision-making authority, they prioritize collective input to foster a collaborative and motivated team environment.

✒️ Which leadership style did you score the highest for?
I scored the highest for the Affiliative leadership style, which focuses on cultivating strong relationships, resolving conflicts, and motivating people during stressful times. It’s all about fostering connection and harmony, which really resonates with me.

✒️ Do you agree with this quiz?
Yes, I do agree with the quiz! The results reflect my natural tendency to prioritize relationships and create a supportive environment. I enjoy being someone people can turn to during tough moments. That said, I also see how my Visionary and Pacesetting scores show my ability to guide a team toward goals and model high standards, so it feels well-rounded.
