Never seen a cat with curly fur before? They really exist, and they're adorable.
There are four main breeds which have curly fur: Selkirk Rex, Devon Rex, Cornish Rex, and LaPerm.
These cats have curly fur due to a genetic variation called rex mutation. Rex mutations cause changes in the structure of groups of hairs which leads to the curly appearance of the fur. A curly coat is referred to as rexed coat.
Cats have an outer coat of stiff hair called guard hair that protects against the rain. They have a middle, softer layer called awn hair, and they also have a short and soft layer that is called down hair. When one of these layers is missing, a cat may have curly hair.
Curly-haired cats are less prone to shedding and may not shed at all. Because of the lack of one or two layers of fur, owners are less likely to suffer allergic reactions around these cats than around long-haired felines. (although not quite the same as being hypoallergenic, it still means reduced chance of allergies!)

Went outside a few weeks ago and thought someone had an auto alarm that sounded like a cat. It was no alarm, it was this little one! There is more to this story but the short version is that the kitten has a warm home with me. 🐾😊
