@MusicCandy @SadMe70 New place to communicate

SadMe70 March 16th, 2022

@MusicCandy Hi! I decided it was easier to just start a new thread. I can't figure out the old one.

I am headed to my mom's tomorrow until Sunday night. Today is the fifth anniversary of dad's death. I couldn't get up there today, so it's the first time I won't be with her on the actual day. I won't be on here this weekend, so I'm writing this on Wednesday.

Yesterday I made my first trip to the mountains in a long time. I hiked to Mary's Rock. It was not crowded and was great weather. It was kind of funny hiking in a t-shirt with snow on the ground!

Today we are celebrating my DIL's birthday. The actual day is Saturday but I'll be at mom's. I am going to make the Korean dessert that I made for New Year's, since their dog ate all the leftovers and she didn't get to try much of it. Then I have some cleaning to do, and some errands to run, and then pick her up 45 min away because my son is here at work near our house. I'm going early enough to drop by my other son's house first to meet his new dog. He and his fiancee are adopting a 2 year old. I need to do laundry to prepare for my trip, and need to write detailed instructions for my pet sitters. I have an old note to work from, but I have a new lady coming one day and I need to make it extra-detailed for her. She is a pet sitting company, so it will cost me, but I need another person in my rotation of feeders. So it's a busy day today!

I am grateful for my spring break this week that allows me to do all these things. I spent the weekend doing very little because I knew the rest of the week would be very busy! I don't like getting home the evening before I have to go back to work, since I won't get laundry, shopping, or cooking done, but it couldn't be helped!

I hope the new thread works out, and that I tagged you correctly so you will see it!

I hope your week has gone well, and here's to five more years of messages to come!

@SadMe70

Well, yes, Im here and the 5 years has gone by and I feel like I "know" you from way back.

It sounds like you packed a lot into a few days, but it was all important. I hope your daughter gets to eat more of the authentic dessert you fixed. I don't know much about Korean food - is is a cake or pie or something else? I don't like American pudding much, but I adore Greek Flan, which seems like almost the same thing. There is one Greek restaurant that has "Mama" in the kitchen on weekends and she makes it fresh. I don't ear out much at all, but I'd go just for that, And baklava.

What kind of dog did they get? My daughter and BF have an old Lab that can hardly walk now, a 2 year old golden Retriever and one one cat and the kitten I gave them I tell folks ,no wonder they don't have babies! We have enough on our hands with the 4 cats, but they are all fixed now and they are sweet and playful with Rachael, plus 3 go outside for business so it's not as much trouble with litter boxes.

I know you will have your glass of Drambuie with your family, and I hope it is nice weather there too. We had a friend's funeral at church that I couldn't attend (Saturday) but I spent most of Thursday setting up for the reception. She was in her fifties and had small bowel adenoma CA. she did get treatment for it, but its not a good prognosis. I just hope the family found some comfort - we made the room really pretty . This was the first indoors service like that in 2 years.

The bulbs are in full bloom in my yard , thanks to the 2 sister Little old ladies who lived there before me. The perennials I planted are coming up too, especially the mountain mint that smells so nice. I read about a plant native to our area that is a holly, yaupon, that you can make tea that is caffeinated. Apparently, it has grown from N. C. coasts to here for a long time. I'm going to look for a plant next week. A nonprofit makes it and hires disabled people to work there. I love the idea, but I'd rather grow my own. 🌳

I'm glad you had at least one nice hike. Rachael and I walked last week too. One of the back roads we sometimes walk on is next to the woods and a railroad track, and the spring peepers are really loud, and lovely. Happy Spring to you!

Hello! We did successfully keep all the birthday food from the dog! The dessert is sweet rice, cooked in flavored water, with different things mixed in. The recipe I used mixed in raisins, green pumpkin seeds, chestnuts, and jujubes which are similar to dates.

I had a great time at mom's! One of my sisters was there the whole time, and the three of us played a lot of games. On Saturday, we celebrated my sister's 50th birthday with three courses of fondue. My other sister and her husband came for that day. We did cheese fondue with various things to dip, three kinds of meat in broth, and chocolate with fruit and cake to dip. We were so full after each course, that we played games for an hour or so in between! I gained a few pounds between the two birthday celebrations, but it was worth it! I am already working on getting that back off.

This week was back to normal. I did my regular exercise and eating, except for pizza last night. My son and DIL came over to assemble a 10 x 10 dog kennel. When she goes to Korea, he might bring the dogs here when he goes to work. They can be inside the house, but this will give them someplace to be so they can be outside sometimes. We still have to put on the roof and get it more level, and we are going to put straw or mulch in it, but the basic kennel is up and can be used.

My other son's dog is a blue tick coon hound, as far as they can tell. She seems like she was probably an active hunting dog since she is 2 and not house broken. She whines all the time. She seems like a very nice dog, but maybe not the best choice for an apartment. They are making progress on the house breaking, and plan to take her to obedience classes, so hopefully she will settle in.

My cats have been spending more time outside since the weather is nicer, so the litter box doesn't get used as much. That is a big bonus! I am glad your cats play so well with Rachael! Animals give so much joy!

I am sorry about your friend. It's so hard to lose someone so early. It was kind of you to set up the room so nicely for her family. I hope that in itself gave you some comfort as well.

Our pink saucer magnolia started to bloom right before that hard freeze, and all the buds died. I hope it will be able to try again. It is the most beautiful tree we have, and I love seeing it every year! Our forsythia is blooming, and a few daffodils, so it is looking springlike! Your mint sounds wonderful! Mine has not come up yet. I just have spearmint and a tiny patch of peppermint.

I am not familiar with yaupon. I hope you find a plant! We tried to grow tea plants once but did not take good care of them and they died before we even got to harvest anything. Hopefully you will have better luck and be able to make your own tea!

I hope to take a walk this weekend. I walked on Wed with my son and the new dog. My son was off for a week between jobs, so it was a rare treat to get to walk with him! That was my only walk this week, so hopefully I can get a long one today or tomorrow. I love hearing the spring peepers! I hope you got more walks this week!

Happy spring to you as well!

Hello - I am sorry I didn't get back to you last weekend - I enjoy reading about your fun times with your family and your mini farm. I am working day shift 2 days this week, everyone is on vacation spring Break - so I hope I can get a few minutes to write back. Cheers to warm weather this week.

@SadMe70 Thanks for opening up, about your feelings.

It take a lot of courage to be able to do that.

It is not easy to do either.

Your amazing, my friend.

Hello! It has been a busy two weeks. My DIL left for her 3 month visit with her family. There was plenty of last minute drama, trying to find someplace to do the required COVID test within the required 48 hour window, since most places advertising tests that fast are actually not able to do it once you get there. Luckily she got it done, then almost missed her connecting flight since her first plane arrived late. But, she got there!

My son is dropping his two dogs off here every morning at 6:30, then my husband has to deal with them all day. He has to trust them to go out and come back in on their own, since he cannot walk them. So far, so good on that count. They also get into any food on counters, and get into the trash. We don't have a secure trash can since our dog rarely does that. My son and I plan to walk together each Wednesday, to give him something to do and to get me out walking more.

We spent a day with my older son last weekend for his birthday. I played Dungeons & Dragons in person for the first time, with my son and his two friends that I have been playing online with occasionally for two years. I dreaded it (social interaction, eek!!) but I did have fun. Between my spring break and the two birthday parties, I have gained some weight, but am slowly taking it back off. My goal is still to end the school year where my 20 pound weight loss left me, and then over the summer try to lose 5-10 more, whatever will get me back into my many pairs of pants.

My son's fiance's birthday is coming up, so we will have another birthday party this week. We plan to get carryout sushi, which I haven't had for a while, so I am looking forward to that. Plus it will just be her and my sons, so no others to interact with.

School is going ok. Testing season is coming up. I am helping next week with some kindergarten math assessments. I helped with them in the fall, and though it gets tedious, it's interesting and a nice break in the routine. I also had to train to possibly help with the dreadful state assessments, because they are compressing the usual two week window to three days so they need more staff. I want nothing to do with it, but I am very glad they are making it so much shorter. Everyone has a fit if you make any noise, no recess allowed, one person in the bathroom at a time, etc. The whole thing is ridiculous.

I am fairly sure there will be no baby goats for the second year in a row. I am sad, but I try to look at it as giving me more time to continue my weight loss this summer. The goats are doing well otherwise, as are all the other animals. My goose is in the middle of her laying season. I decided to try making a goose egg pound cake for my son's bday, since goose eggs are heavy and should be good for a dense cake. Well, it turned out to be the lightest, fluffiest cake I ever made. It was delicious, but not at all like a pound cake, and I have no idea how that happened!

How did the day shift go? Are you back to nights? It must be hard to switch back and forth! I hope you are getting some nice walks. I have not been outside yet today, but it looks nice and sunny! Have a good week, my friend!

Hello my friend , i think I finally have some time to catch up writing. The day shifts I worked last week were mid week and extra shifts. Neither one was too bad work wise, but it did make for a long week and trying to get in the walks with Rachael and meals, laundry ect was a lot. My other shoulder is bothering me too so sleep isnt great. I used that overtime cash to pay the timeshare fee for my ex and other daughter who I transferred the deed to at Massanutten. It was supposed to transfer after the divorce but we never got around to it. So we had to go through 2 rounds of paperwork by US mail and documents signed and a fee for that - but its the last thing I'll do paying it. I covered it for 2 years and they can go in November already pd for and reserved. Daughter will have it in the end but it has to be in his estate for now. It's fine, we are on good terms anyway.

You are exceptionally nice to care for 2 dogs that aren't your own, even if the going outdoors when you arent there is going OK. I don't think I'd be that accommodating with them getting into garbage, which YOU have to clean up. Other daughter and her BF take off weekends sometimes and ask friends and her Dad to go to their house to take the 2 dogs out, and one can hardly walk. Not my thing , which she knows ahead of time. At least the dog walking gets you outside yourself to enjoy the weather and exercise. I hope your magnolia tree blooms again - they are beautiful and very common in N.C., where i grew up.

sorry for no baby goats, but like you said, you can put more attention to your personal goals. I never had goose eggs to eat. A coworker sometimes brings duck eggs, and they are very rich. she has 4 baby goslings in her pond, and the pics are so cute.

However speaking of working outside in the yard/ garden - I must have gotten into some poison oak and my arms and wrists are covered in blotches. I had on gloves, but apparently anything you touch can also get infected with the oil. Started Wednesday - Thursday was miserable and I came in to work at 11 anyway. That turned out in my favor - there was one of the nice docs in the ED and he wrote me a script for prednisone , which has helped a lot now. Still itchy some, but not maddening like before. Bonus - the prednisone helps the inflammation in my shoulder too - and the ice packs for my shoulder help my arms when it gets unbearable. I don't think I would have made it working these shifts if not for that. Washed all the sheets and just tossed out the shirt I was wearing, old anyway, and shoes too. I understand if any oil is left, it can re-infect you a month later. No joke,

Testing is such a pain, as you mentioned it before - and I can only imagine. so stupid anyway. We have a JACHO visit too coming up and we ALL have to personally attend a 30 minute class. On a day i'm not working, so I just said i'm going to work a few hours anyway to make it worth a minimum hr driving. That is this Wednesday - daytime - again. and I don't ever see the inspectors al all on nights so its worthless for me. I'll be glad to finally be done with the silly politics in healthcare in a year and a half.

I have a busy week already - Monday a class on Medicare that is free from the county , and working Wednesday and then I'm a Reader at the evening service at church with holy Week. It is a lot of reading and candles extinguished different times, and some chants/ songs. Only 5 people volunteers, most the old timers who have done it for years. My first time , but I have good directions. It is the Service of shadows, or Tennebrae. I told the leader, it looks easy following along when you are in the pews! i have time to practice though. The other thing people could volunteer for was to bring candy for the egg hunt , and let me say they stepped up to that job. The whole table is full already. I think there will be leftovers for the Shelter when I take their meal.

I have a couple of patients now, so I'll sign off and I hope the DIL visit goes well and she gets back safely. AND I hope you get some playtime for You after the dogs go home. Reminding everyone to pray for Ukraine.. I put a yard sign up with the message and their flag. Christ have mercy.

SadMe70 OP April 16th, 2022

Hello, and Happy Easter! I hope that your Holy Week services are going well. I had not heard of the Service of Shadows. Is that specifically for Easter? My church growing up did a long Easter vigil service on Holy Saturday night, and there were candles for all the parisioners.

Our Kindergarten did an egg hunt and that was really nice for the kids. There are 5 classes, so they had five stations around the track. Three were games like sack races, one was the egg hunt, and one was a snack. Fifteen minutes per station. Fairly easy to set up and lots of fun. I was lucky enough to be able to be there to help with my K class. Our second grade lessons were cancelled that day, but I went up to see if my teacher needed a bathroom break. Two of my five kids said they wanted to come with me anyway, so I went and got some book sets and the three of them sat and read them together. It was a good feeling that they wanted to come with me, and we had a nice relaxed time while they got some low-pressure practice reading. It made my heart feel good!

We had dinner Wed night at my son and fiance's house for her birthday. We got carryout sushi platters and it was so delicious! She is 26, and my DIL is also 26. Fun coincidence! My sons are 25 and 28, so one has an older woman, and one a younger. :-)

My eating has not been too bad, and exercise has been ok. My shoulder has ramped up the last 2 weeks and I don't know why. Then I got a bad knot in my neck and the whole neck/shoulder area has a line of new pain down it. I've been trying to stretch different ways and rub the knots but it's pretty tenacious. How are your shoulders doing?

I was off yesterday but did no exercise at all. Hopefully I will go on a walk today! I did manage two one-hour walks during the week, one with my son and his 2 dogs. My son's allergies were terrible despite taking meds. He sneezed almost constantly during our walk, and his eyes were all swollen. I felt bad seeing him so miserable, and not being able to do anything for him.

How nice that you are giving your daughter the timeshare! My son and I stayed there once with his robotics team when they had a competition in Harrisonburg. Five families rented it together so it wasn't too expensive. Your daughter will get a lot of enjoyment from it!

I don't think the magnolia tree is going to bloom again, but our dogwoods are blooming, and the azaleas are getting ready. There are lots of other pretty pink and white trees in the area that I see driving by. Spring is such a beautiful time!

The lady who lives down the road from me who is my only egg customer bought goose eggs last year to dye with her granddaughter. She texted me this week hoping to get some, and I was able to take her 6 yesterday. They were so pretty last year, so I asked her to send me a picture again this year!

I am so sorry to hear about the poison oak!! I never had problems as a child, but have had two really terrible cases as an adult, so I know what you are going through. I know that was awful. I'm so glad that doctor was nice enough to help you get the prednisone! I knew the oil could spread it, but I did not realize it could last so long. That is scary!

I'm sure the class you had to go to was not fun. Our school is compressing the state SOL testing from two weeks to 3 days so they are going to need more staff to run it. I have never had to before, and want nothing to do with it, but I had to go to "test security" training. Blech. One thing is that the adult proctors are not allowed to even look at the kid's screen, because you aren't allowed to see any test questions. If they need help, you have to IM for the IT person or site test coordinator to come help. I wanted to tell them that I have absolutely no interest in seeing any test questions and that I think the big deal that is made of all this is completely over the top and not in the kids' best interests at all. Politics in health care and education is not helping patients or students.

I hope your week and weekend go well! Happy Easter!

Hello, nice to get your note. The Service of shadows , or Maundy Thursday is recognized by Catholic and Episcopalian, and some other denominations now. Usually, it is a long one - an agape meal, foot washing, eucharist and then the "stripping of the alter".. the ladies come and take away every covering, banner, the communion, palms, literally everything up front as a symbol of Christ preparing to leave the earth ,while we recite a Psalm, or in my case, cry. The priest comes back in , now in a black vestment and covers the baptismal font in black and they bring out a cross to lay in front of the bare alter and everyone leaves in silence. It is so moving. This year we still did not have the meal and foot washing, but the rest was still an hour, We have the Saturday vigil too, but I miss that working.

Your note about the kids wanting to be with you and read together made me smile - its all how yoi make them feel which they will never lose. I always read a lot as a young person, and I'm glad my parents encouraged it. The small town library was the only building in town with AC, so hot Saturday mornings were a treat to sit in the kids room and then check out our week of books.

Sounds like your son's fiancé will fit right in with the family- how nice of you to share a sushi dinner. My daughter wants to do sushi with me for mother's Day, but it won't be a big deal with me working the weekend nights. I told her I want a nice copper pan, not another Mother's Day wall hanging!

So sorry about your shoulders. With the prednisone antiflamatory, mine have not hurt at all, for now anyway. The itching is getting better, but my arms look like i escaped from a briar patch. It has lasted 2 weeks now. I'm weaning off the prednisone, but still have some zyrtek. We did get our walks in, and I'm glad you did too. We do what we can. I haven't done my usual stairs this week-end, I feel like I'm finally recovering from the misery, so just walking some as work comes up. Not too bad so far. I had poison ivy as a child, but never this bad - I'm going to be VERRY careful now.

I don't envy you having to do the tests with the children. It is so stressful for some of the young ones, and totally unnecessary in most cases. I hope it goes by fast an no glitches. I have an easier week coming up , cooking the shelter meal on Monday but nothing else extra. My yard is blooming too we both love how beautiful flowers just lift your spirits. There are some huge wild azaleas starting up in my woods too. Fiance wants to cut them back, I told him to leave them alone. I bet the decorated goose eggs are fun and the kids will enjoy them I know. It is supposed to be nice weather for the hunts at church. In person finally. I hope you have peaceful Easter Day - that's what we need now.

Sorry I did not write this weekend - allergies knocking me out. Hopefully the pollen will ease up soon.

SadMe70 OP April 30th, 2022

Hello my friend! I am having a terrible time with the pollen. Last weekend was truly awful. By Friday I felt so bad, with such a tremendous headache, that I started taking Claritin and Tylenol. I felt so bad on Saturday that I missed my cousin's wedding, and actually spent most of the day in bed. I got up, ate, took something to knock me out, and stayed there until the afternoon. Then I laid around watching TV. Other than after my COVID vaccines, I can't remember when I last spent the day ill in bed! I have certainly not had this kind of trouble from pollen in recent years. I don't even know specifically what plant is getting to me.

Between eating badly, too much alcohol, and missing all my walks because I can't tolerate being outside, I've gained five pounds :( I know I can take it off once the pollen eases up, but I was really hoping to end the school year at the weight I reached back in Oct, and then try to lose 5 more this summer. Looks like I will be needing to lose 10!

I am headed to my son's house in a few minutes. They have an appointment at 10 at the wedding venue. They told me it was for cake tasting. I don't see why you need to have a whole visit to taste cake, so I am hoping they will be planning the whole menu! Not that I am opposed to eating cake...

Sorry for the short message, but I've got to head out to his house. I hope you are doing well!

I am so sorry you are having such a terrible time with the pollen. Fortunately, that is not a problem for me, but I am still itching some from the poison oak, and its been 4 weeks. Better, but not gone and I do have some scars from scratching - can't help it. I hope your allergies get better soon, it does get better when the Spring wears on- but still, missing a wedding is just awful.

Weddings these days seem to be a much bigger deal - maybe the groom and bride need to taste it, but does the rest of the clan have to also? I remember when I was young, all wedding cakes were about the same, and there were wedding cookies( the white sugar coated shortbread ones) nuts, mints and punch and that's it. I hope you made it OK. Did you have to drive to Powhatan just for that? Seems a bit much.

don't worry about the extra pounds right now- sometimes it can't be helped. I am having a harder time at work - its been busy and when I'm tired, a bite of anything will do - this week KK doughnuts., and pizza. Next week is nurses week ( snacks) and the hospital week ( more sweets and snacks) I wish they would just give us a gift card or some nonfood item.

Things at home are about the same. Daughter says she has an update about BF - she planned to have " The Talk" - as in do you want to marry me or not.. 6 years together and she has the biological clock ticking. I don't know, he's a nice enough guy and treats her nicely - but she wants a marriage and kids and he keeps saying it;s the money. It will always be one thing or another. She couldn't tell me how it went, was out with friends, but I'm kinda hoping something gets resolved.

Work is busy this weekend and I am working extra Tuesday day shift - just for the snacks of course. No really, boss says they need the help so I'll be here. The school year is wrapping up, stay as happy as you can be. PS. the Falcons on the cam in Richmond have hatched 3 babies!! So cute and you can watch them live.

Hello, I have had very little trouble with pollen for a week or more now, which is a relief, but I have been in a bit of a spiral. Two weeks of staying inside, being less active, and eating and drinking too much was not good for me. I had already gained some weight from the birthdays we had all in a row, but I'm now up almost 8 pounds just in 2 months. Last weekend I had a bout of depression, and while the actual depression has lifted, I'm just feeling sad. My eating continues to be bad, and I am drinking every day. I don't get drunk, but it's just more calories contributing to my weight. I had hoped to end the school year at the same weight I had gotten down to after losing the 20 pounds last year, and then try to lose 5-10 more this summer, but now I've dug myself into a bigger hole so I'm feeling bad about letting that happen. I have not resisted the junk at school, and have had junk in the house. I'm just not feeling good about myself right now!

School is going well. Only two weeks left, and I have mixed feelings about that. I will have a lot more time to exercise, and plan to restart the calorie counting program, so hopefully I can get myself under control. On the other hand, it keeps my mind busy and I don't dwell on sadness or depression when I am there. This past week I did get out to walk again finally. One walk in particular was really nice. I hope the weather will be good enough to let me get a long one in this weekend. I think I need it!

Sorry to not have any actual news this week. Last week I couldn't even get myself to log on here. The whole last month has not been my best.

I look forward to hearing how your week has been! I hope things are going well with you. Even though I did not write last week, I was thinking about you, and just knowing that you are out there and would be a sympathetic ear once I did write helped me!

MusicCandy May 15th, 2022

Hello my sad friend,

I am always amazed at how in sync we seem to be. I was also pretty sad and depressed for no real reason last week, and couldn't muster up to log on. I saw you didn't leave a message so it was OK for me not to.. It was Mother's Day and I worked and then I was tired so we didn't celebrate. It just seemed like nothing was pleasurable. I'm glad you had at least one walk. Rachael and I got in our walks last week , but it left me with just the feeling that I did it, which was something, but I didn't feel any better afterwards.

I know what you mean about work too. sometimes at home dealing with the junk that depresses me, and the grinding routine of every day the same - at least work gives me something to focus on and passes the hours. And health wise, it has been one thing after another.

After my right shoulder got better, it was my left shoulder, and then 6 weeks of itching / poison oak, and now I have ear problems - impacted ear wax that I can usually treat at home - but this time nothing has worked for 3 days. I thought the mild vertigo might have been the ear crystals, but no- it is the same ear that always does this. I tried all the drops and rinses and I can't hear at all in that ear ( hard to hear patients talk) and every time i get up and down, - vertigo. It doesn't last long, but annoying. I have rubbed my ear so much, now its really irritated and hurts too. I haven't seen an ENT yet, but it looks like I have to. My PNP visit was horrible when they tried to flush with water - it was like a bomb went off in my ear and they said it was wax that hit the ear drum. That happened twice and i cried for an hour afterward. No need to do that again!

I am trying to get through the last 6 hrs of work this weekend, and so far not too bad. at least.

Don't ever feel bad about just not being able to chat - I understand and the same for me. Sometimes life just sucks and that is that.
