Comic Art
For some reason, I've been doing quite a few characters from comic strips lately. Maybe because not a lot of people know these characters. But, comic strips paved the way for comic books, animated shorts, animated films and cartoon shows
Here are some comic book/comic strip characters I've done over the past few years. How many can you recognize?
Some I forgot...
@Enthenia I recognize 10 of the characters. Good job on drawing them, I like them. Did you use color pencils?
@amazingbean795 10 is a lot! I'm sure many wouldn't even get ten.
It's a mixture of mediums. Watercolor pencils, pastel, watercolor...
@Enthenia haha I had to think for a minute to remember some of them. I was young when those came out. That's cool. Do you like to paint with acrylics too?
@amazingbean795 It's been a long time since I've tried acrylics. I stick with watercolor pencils because I have a dog that does unexpected leaps of kindness. Pencils are easier to pick up than watercolors.
@Enthenia I Agree color pencils can be easier to pick up than water colors. I'm not much of a drawer so i usually sketch and then paint over it.
@Enthenia I think recognized about six that I could name and six more if I thought real hard
@communicativePond1728 I've been remembering some titles. There were a LOT! Some I don't think I really read (like Doonesbury. I didn't get the political humor) but I knew the names.
@Enthenia Yes, I never really got into Doonesbury either. Comics were always a bit hit and miss personally. Probably my favourite though is Calvin and Hobbes 🧐
I recognize most of them. It's easy when you're old enough to remember when newspapers used to have comic strips that were actually funny.
@slowdecline48 Admittedly, a couple are foreign comics. However it's interesting to see how many titles there are and how many are still ongoing. Like Blondie. Created in the 1930's by Chic Young and now done by his son. Hägar is the same way although it's not as old as Blondie.
And, there are quite a few that don't date themselves really like Peanuts or Calvin and Hobbes.
There are ones that I wish were in anthologies like Beetle Bailey, Hi and Lois, or even more volumes of The Wizard of Id and Hägar but I am not a book publisher nor do I know any.
@Enthenia I consider Blondie a zombie comic. It was great back when Chic Young was drawing it. Blondie was a flapper girl & Dagwood was cool! Now they're married & Dagwood has been a schmuck for many years...not funny anymore. Garfield is also a "living dead" comic, for the same reason why Cathy wasn't funny to begin with: using the same few jokes for most of its run.
I stopped reading the comics once I started getting my news from sources on the Net; since then I still get it from the Net but have mostly abandoned legacy news media for a few reasons.
@slowdecline48 Haven't read any of the newer Blondie ones. Just knew it was ongoing. Haven't kept up on Garfield--or really any of them. Have too many other things going on. I preferred the Garfield cartoon anyway.
I do like looking through the anthologies I have (although I need to get more Pogo ones while they're still reasonably priced).
Yooooo these are so good!!!! <3
@jesusredeemedme2425 aw thanks! Here are some I did more recently. Have some different supplies too. (Spider-Man was done yesterday)
