@pinkKite8784 Oh oh, that's how it is! Hahaha, these songs are a few years old, but that doesn't stop them from being really good.

I also like old Chinese songs, especially from the 00s-10s. Jay Chou is probably the most popular singer in our country. Nowadays, the Chinese music scene is less and less to my taste.

On the contrary, I've been increasingly fond of English songs since junior high school, hahaha, but I rarely listen to songs these days.

Yes, I agree. These songs are old but they are still really good in my opinion. I actually don't know any modern Chinese pop songs. And i like English songs too, just like you.

Where are you from by the way? From China?

@pinkKite8784

I'm from Guangdong Province in China.

I guess my musical tastes are a bit strange. In junior high and high school, I liked a lot of English songs, especially the most popular ones. I would go to the radio station's website to find the latest and hottest songs.

However, since starting university, I've become fond of old English songs, and gradually, I've come to like English rock – especially from the 80s or 90s. I've even written some Chinese popular science articles about these songs...

However, due to depression and other reasons, I haven't explored my musical interests for a long time, and those articles haven't been updated for a long time.

@pinkKite8784 What a cool hobby/interest! I wish I could help with recommendations and/or advice but I am afraid I don't have any as of right now. The Chinese language is a beautiful one; please keep us updated on your linguistic endeavors! 😄

@sierrarain03 it's okay if you don't have any recommendations or advice

How about you though? What are your hobbies? :D have you tried learning another language maybe?

I'll try to keep you updated on my language learning journey, but honestly my progress is painfully slow as i'm busy with school and sometimes i just lose the motivation to study. Partly because sometimes i get lazy and partly because i have to deal with my own hardships

There is no pressure! A hobby is supposed to be a hobby not a chore it's supposed to be enjoyable and leisurely. So don't let the pressure that you might feel to do it ruin the enjoyment for you :-). Some hobbies I enjoy are Reading writing watching TV I love doing new crafts or baking a new recipe. I am pretty open-minded when it comes to hobbies and I like to dabble in a little bit of everything!

In terms of languages when I was in high school I first started in 7th grade learning a tiny bit of Chinese in a study hall optional class but I don't remember anything now LOL. Then once I got to high school I chose a language which was German for a few years but once that got canceled (because there were not enough teachers) I had a switch to Spanish. And then now in college I took two classes of ASL so safe to say I know tidbits of quite a few languages but I'm not fluent or close to fluent in any! I used to do duolingo and I was learning Hawaiian Japanese and Chinese but that was a little while ago and I haven't done that in a bit.

I always think languages are very cool so it's always fun to see other people that are interested in linguistics!

I'm not learning Chinese but that is awesome, I'm learning Greek and find using songs to gamify learning is so helpful. I would check out of there are any Chinese communities on ***, check out if there is a Chinese embassy website in your country and see if they have links to learning resources, TV stations and radio stations too xxx

@blueSpring337

Thank you for your advice and good luck in learning Greek! Is it a difficult language?

Thank you, and I'd say it's quite beginner friendly. I found it was easy to pick up once you understand the letters. I used Linguaphone books and cassettes (very retro, they can still be found on eBay) they contain monologues, dialogues and learning exercises which got me used to reading and listening. And I listen to London Greek Radio in the evenings and sometimes tune into HellenicTV station xxx Duolingo is good to for practicing on the go also. I'm good at reading and listening but not very good at speaking just yet. It's definitely my goal to be better with my language in 2025 😄 An example Greek song is Eipes by Ivi Adamou

@livbinny

I didn't mean to make you sad :( it's just that chinese songs are so under-appreciated and underrated. These days people are really, really into japanese and korean culture. Honestly i like japanese culture too but i have nobody to talk to irl about mandopop and chinese anime :( and honestly it does get lonely.

I'm a chinese person who grew up outside of China. As a kid i absolutely despised learning Chinese as i thought it was incredibly difficult and useless. But as i grew older, i started learning more about my heritage and i also found some Chinese songs and anime that i really, really like. And after a really long time of despising the language, i actually want to learn it now.

I'm currently taking a German intensive course because it's compulsory and even though i'm quite good at it ( even my German is better than my Chinese ), i just don't feel happy learning it. In my heart i want to learn Chinese and i hope i can be fluent in it one day
