Anyone learning Chinese?
Hello there, my name is Naomi and i'm currently learning chinese as a hobby, because i absolutely love chinese songs.
Do you have a favorite chinese song? If you do, please share it with me :D
@pinkKite8784 Hello! I'm a Chinese person! I'd love to chat with you! Which singers do you like?
@Megalodon123
Hello there! :D i'll tell you some Chinese songs that i like ( in English )
A little bit sweet by silence wang ( this is my favorite because it's so cute )
Friends by emil chau
Hello, tomorrow by niu nai ka fei
Mice loves rice
How about you? What are your favorite chinese songs?
@pinkKite8784 Oh oh, that's how it is! Hahaha, these songs are a few years old, but that doesn't stop them from being really good.
I also like old Chinese songs, especially from the 00s-10s. Jay Chou is probably the most popular singer in our country. Nowadays, the Chinese music scene is less and less to my taste.
On the contrary, I've been increasingly fond of English songs since junior high school, hahaha, but I rarely listen to songs these days.
@Megalodon123
Yes, I agree. These songs are old but they are still really good in my opinion. I actually don't know any modern Chinese pop songs. And i like English songs too, just like you.
Where are you from by the way? From China?
@pinkKite8784
I'm from Guangdong Province in China.
I guess my musical tastes are a bit strange. In junior high and high school, I liked a lot of English songs, especially the most popular ones. I would go to the radio station's website to find the latest and hottest songs.
However, since starting university, I've become fond of old English songs, and gradually, I've come to like English rock – especially from the 80s or 90s. I've even written some Chinese popular science articles about these songs...
However, due to depression and other reasons, I haven't explored my musical interests for a long time, and those articles haven't been updated for a long time.
@Megalodon123
I hope that one day you'll be able to find joy again in your musical interest and in other aspects of your life. I've read your last post before, and honestly, even though i don't know what to respond to your vent, i truly hope that one day you will be able to overcome all your obstacles and you'll feel content with your life
@Megalodon123
I actually want to tell you a bit about my story about why i'm learning chinese. And i hope you won't mind ^^'
The truth is i'm actually a chinese person myself. I was born in an asian country and even though there's quite a lot of chinese people here, only very few speak the language (because of discrimination and because the Chinese language was banned for 30 years). The thing that makes me sad is that i feel like i'm the only person who's interested in learning more about my heritage, whether it's about my ancestors' culture or the language. Most people here hate learning Chinese as it's a difficult language, and honestly i don't blame them because i used to hate learning Chinese too. But ever since i started listening to chinese songs and watching chinese anime, i'm starting to be more curious and interested about the culture.
I wonder what life is like in China. Are there lots of Chinese New Year decorations in public places like malls? I celebrate CNY too and i can see CNY decorations in some public places. Even though there's still discrimination, thankfully it's a lot more peaceful now.
Oh and also i apologize if my message is too long 🥲
@pinkKite8784
Thank you.
Can I take a guess at the name of the country where it is forbidden to speak Chinese because of discrimination? Is it located in Southeast Asia?
My life is a mess, and I'm in a lot of pain right now, but I think it might get better.
The atmosphere around Chinese New Year here is actually getting weaker. This is due to many factors, such as the fading of the old concept of the extended family, and so on.
@Megalodon123
Yes, it's in southeast asia, specifically indonesia.
I'm sorry to hear that you're in a lot of pain right now. I hope you'll continue fighting in spite of the pain and i hope one day you'll find the light at the end of the tunnel. You are strong and resilient enough to overcome your hardships. 加油!
Honestly i feel a bit sad to hear that the CNY decorations aren't that festive anymore, but that's okay i guess.
@pinkKite8784
I have some knowledge of history and roughly know some of the history of anti-Chinese sentiment in Indonesia – it was really tragic.
Perhaps there is also a subjective element in the fact that the New Year is no longer so festive, as I was immersed in a low ebb and had no time to prepare for many traditional customs.
@pinkKite8784 I am also trying to learn a foreign language – I have been learning Spanish on Duolingo, and let it try to become an anchor in my life.

@pinkKite8784 What a cool hobby/interest! I wish I could help with recommendations and/or advice but I am afraid I don't have any as of right now. The Chinese language is a beautiful one; please keep us updated on your linguistic endeavors! 😄
@sierrarain03 it's okay if you don't have any recommendations or advice
How about you though? What are your hobbies? :D have you tried learning another language maybe?
I'll try to keep you updated on my language learning journey, but honestly my progress is painfully slow as i'm busy with school and sometimes i just lose the motivation to study. Partly because sometimes i get lazy and partly because i have to deal with my own hardships
There is no pressure! A hobby is supposed to be a hobby not a chore it's supposed to be enjoyable and leisurely. So don't let the pressure that you might feel to do it ruin the enjoyment for you :-). Some hobbies I enjoy are Reading writing watching TV I love doing new crafts or baking a new recipe. I am pretty open-minded when it comes to hobbies and I like to dabble in a little bit of everything!
In terms of languages when I was in high school I first started in 7th grade learning a tiny bit of Chinese in a study hall optional class but I don't remember anything now LOL. Then once I got to high school I chose a language which was German for a few years but once that got canceled (because there were not enough teachers) I had a switch to Spanish. And then now in college I took two classes of ASL so safe to say I know tidbits of quite a few languages but I'm not fluent or close to fluent in any! I used to do duolingo and I was learning Hawaiian Japanese and Chinese but that was a little while ago and I haven't done that in a bit.
I always think languages are very cool so it's always fun to see other people that are interested in linguistics!
I'm not learning Chinese but that is awesome, I'm learning Greek and find using songs to gamify learning is so helpful. I would check out of there are any Chinese communities on ***, check out if there is a Chinese embassy website in your country and see if they have links to learning resources, TV stations and radio stations too xxx
@blueSpring337
Thank you for your advice and good luck in learning Greek! Is it a difficult language?
Thank you, and I'd say it's quite beginner friendly. I found it was easy to pick up once you understand the letters. I used Linguaphone books and cassettes (very retro, they can still be found on eBay) they contain monologues, dialogues and learning exercises which got me used to reading and listening. And I listen to London Greek Radio in the evenings and sometimes tune into HellenicTV station xxx Duolingo is good to for practicing on the go also. I'm good at reading and listening but not very good at speaking just yet. It's definitely my goal to be better with my language in 2025 😄 An example Greek song is Eipes by Ivi Adamou
Grain in ear
