fear of death/afterlife

eggoglobe787 August 19th, 2019

Ive had the fear of death and if afterlife exists for i dont know how long. As much as i want to distract myself it will only bring my anxiety back way too often and i just wanna know. I have this uncontrollable habit where i just google everything. Unfortunately google hasnt been helping me because theyre telling me theres no afterlife and it stresses me out too much. I really just want to know the truth so it doesnt come back to me because I just feel so miserable. Im in fact not religious so religion wont help me out.

Hi. So google doesn't have the answer. Or the answer doesn't satisfy you. In any case, you're free to believe what you want. You want to believe there's an afterlife, believe it, and work for it. At the end of the day, death IS inevitable. No one knows what happened on the other end, and no one came back to tell us what happened. What do we do? We live life by our morals and values, what makes us happy and true to ourselves. We'll figure out the rest once we're dead :)

I hope you do not feel that I'm taking ease at your pain but worrying about something we do not know will not help. Focus on the now, your present moment and don't let worry steal your joy.

I relate very deeply to this. Yesterday I was googling everything and I got so confused. I usually get panick attacks all the time, and I try to make plans but I always get the thought "What if I die before it?" And that's how I panic most of the times.

Youre not alone sometimes I find myself laying in bed thinking about when the day comes that I die. Which is one of my biggest causes for my anxiety. Its very annoying. But youre not alone. I too look for answers regarding an afterlife all we can really do is have faith and believe that there, no one knows for sure if there is or isnt one.

@AlwaysAnxious1998 I do the same. Ever since my anxiety started last year i keep looking for answers and research on the afterlife or reincarnation. It bothers me that there are SO MANY versions of the afterlife, adding fuel to my fear that maybe there is really nothing. I hate this fear

Because I and another deemed your responses very inappropriate and reported them. Expressing your own non-belief with materialist/physicalist philosophy, which is still a belief, on a thread about thanatophobia was not very wise. Additionally, your claims about the 'soul' and the 'self' and thoughts were quite inaccurate anyways. There are plenty of doctors and scientists who believe in the 'continuation of consciousness after death' indefinitely.

Please be more considerate in the future.

I was the same for a while. But death is natural for everyone and everything. Life is like the seasons. We're born in spring, live in summer, settle down in autumn, and die in winter. And then it repeats like that on and on forever, always with slight changes though. I hope that makes sense? I totally get being afraid of dying. It's scary because we don't know what will happen or where our souls will go or anything.

However, sometimes, no matter how much or how little we fear death, the at least slight fear helps keep us safe from a lot of things that could potentially harm us. The thought of death also, in a lot of cases, helps us be kinder people. Like, you never know when you or someone else will go, so you wanna be kind to them. And then there's also religious cases of wanting to be a kind person so that you can get on the good side of the afterlife (idk how to phrase that. i'm only familiar with a few ideas of afterlife).

Personally, I believe that Earth is basically a school for our souls. Our souls are sent here and possibly other places to learn and grow and prepare us for something beyond mortal understanding. I think that we are given tasks and lessons to learn in all of our time in the physical realm to prepare our souls for something greater, though I'm not sure what that is, and when one round in the physical realm is over, we go somewhere in a non-physical realm to reflect and rest before what comes next, be it another time in a body or some other part of the afterlife. Also, I don't believe there is some sort of divine punishment. I think that when it comes to that, you are reincarnated again and have to try again. Idk. I'm a bit newer to my spirituality and am still discovering and working out what I personally believe, so these beliefs will more than likely change in the future.

I think a good way to not be so anxious about death and what happens after you die would be to celebrate it actually. That's what worked for me personally, as well as quite a few other people I know and am close with. It's a natural part of the infinite circle of life. Like I mentioned earlier, the stages of life are like the seasons. All the seasons are beautiful in some way, no? So is just about every part of life. There are ups and downs and flat points to everything, but I think that if we take time to celebrate and appreciate the natural cycles of life, we tend to fear them less. This might not work for you, but I think it's worth a shot at trying.

I've spent quite a bit a time constructing my personal beliefs, and there is a long and infite way to go for me on my spiritual journey. That includes thinking about death and what may happen after our soul leaves our bodies. I can't honestly say that there is on correct thought process or depiction of it, because it is such a big Universal thing beyond our understanding as mortals and I believe that it is meant to stay a secret of the Universe.

I know you said you aren't religious or spiritual, and you may or may not agree with the thoughts and notions I stated, but I figured I throw in my two cents about what I believe at the moment and what helped me get over the fear of death. I know it's a big and scary and daunting thought, but I think that taking the time to step back, and look at and appreciate the infinte cycles of life in its entirety, you may come to fear death a little less.

I hope that helped and gave another perspective of the subject. You don't have to agree by any means, but I hope you might try taking a step back, breathe, and simply appreciate and celebrate life's cycles as whole, life and death and all. Again, it may or may not help, and this is all my personal viewpoint and how I got over the fear of death that was ingrained in me as a kid, but I hope you take at least some of this into consideration, and I hope your fear and anxiety about it eases soon. It's compeltely healthy to be afraid of and wanting to know what happens after dying, but to the point of massive fear and anxiety? It's not healthy at that point.

Again, I hope what I said helped in even the smallest way, and I hope you take at least something into consideration. I hope that the immense anxiety you have about death eases and calms down one day. It's not fun having so much anxiety about anything, I know.

Lots of love and good vibesheart

Blessed be

p.s. i hope that all made at least some sense???
