@amiablePeace77 I really like that mental health is being given more and more importance as time progresses :)

I hear you! It's time to share information and eliminate stigma!

One of the things that changed is when I was younger, ethnicity was something you hid. I am 4th generation Japanese American and I felt a lot of prejudice growing up. Now my kids are proud to say that they are mixed and try to add as many ethnicities as possible.

One of the negative things that changed in a big way is the idea of cultural appropriation. Things that I grew up with are now protested against because of things like the depiction of negative stereotypes. This has affected childhood books (Dr. Seuss), Disney rides and movies ( Peter Pan, Pirates of the Caribbean), songs on the radio, and cartoons (Bugs Bunny).  Honestly, I never thought of the scenes and language in these items offensive or demeaning. With everything that is available on the internet, I think some of these banned things are a waste of time and resources. Kids are able to access many more real-life images, weapons, and messages that are not suitable or appropriate for them than anything they find in old books and movies. BTW, How many kids still read books without sparknotes?

@NotAllHere713

Nice that your kids can live with more freedom now and are proud of who they are, sorry though that you had to hide your ethnicity. I can only imagine how much shame it might have caused you.

You have a point about the books having offensive or demeaning contents compared to what kids can see nowadays on the internet. There are parental controls now, but I guess not every parent is using them.

The world was different, certainly. When I was a kid, my country in Europe was some kind of a communist regime (think something like North Korea now). The shelves in our shops were often empty, and we lived in a constant fear of American (!) nuclear attack.

There was only one and a half (literally!) channel on TV. One my favourite shows was the anime called "G-Force: Guardians of Space". When I needed to escape my home's toxic atmosphere (drinking, abusive dad, mom constantly yelling, nervous or depressed), I imagined I am in the G-Force team ;-) I wept into years when I've first watched this series being 40+: As a child I was so little, helpless, innocent, thoughtful and... lonely.

However, some things were good. The sense of community was great. Children were told to obey their parents, respect other people and say a nice hello to the neighbours. Everybody felt important, no matter the janitor or the head of the school. We knew all the neighbours within half of a mile or more (quite opposite to nowadays, isn't it?). Coming back from school while 7 or 10 years old I could have been annoyed by some young hooligans, but about drugs you could scarcely learn from TV and there was no pedophilia known. It was even safer than today then.

I spent a lot of time reading books. But it took weeks to find a single interesting photo or article in the aviation magazine I loved. When I started to use the internet in the 1990s, it was a delightful experience to me, suddenly to have a lot of this knowledge at the tips of my fingers. Now I am still happy to find books or movies from the 70s-to-90s era.

Usually there was a single (cable) telephone in the entire neighborhood and it was used only for emergencies, really important matters or international calls. Not chatting on the phone about nothing for hours. Chatting was very welcomed, but in pairs or groups, in real life. But it was hard to meet a foreigner and talk in English with anyone.

Children used to be more independent those days, more careful about their basic safety (even when entering ruins of very old houses), more survivable. We were not carrying juice or cola bottles with us every time. When we were hungry or thirsty, we looked for an apple tree by the road, asked someone if we can drink water from his well (freezing and very tasty!) or chew some sorrel leaves. We played soccer as long as the ball was visible in the darkness (hopefully the ball was white). That was insane :)

1. I didn't think much when I was young to be honest but as to kids of today they seem to be more on the side of internet which is sad

2. I guess it's having to accomplish my life goals since I have limited time

3. probably knowing the basics of what I am doing

I hear you, the internet seems to be the "One and only" for some kids these days.

I think so I guess I'm one of the few ones to actually appreciated the time before devices were a thing

Cultural values have changed to allow for more inclusion. In the 1970's and early 1980's black and whites were looked down upon if they intermingled. Gays and lesbians were considered awkward and were generally unaccepted for who they were. There was a lot of stero typing that ttok place that simply would not be tolerated today. It is better today that people of all walks of life are more accpted in todays society it is still not perfect but  I believe more advancements have been made sure there has also been some setbacks. People of today are encouraged to come out with thheir sexuality and be who they really are. We should not have to hide because at the end of the day we all breath the same air and all bleed the same ways. By allowing yourself to accept others and welcome diversity you become a better person which allows for more opportunities for all.

@frankWheel1972

You made some goods points! It is not perfect or what we need to be right now but there are improvements. Those times in the 70s and 80s were definitively very hard for people.

.

I think that the internet is both curse and blessing. Curse, in that people who are desperate for attention will go to any lengths to get it on the internet. Their fetishes and hang-ups and creepiness are displayed for all to see. People don't seem to care much about behaving with class. And political hatreds are through the roof. One of the reasons I don't visit Twitter/X much.

But the internet does provide information at your fingertips. Some info is bogus, but there's a lot that's helpful. And people can connect with each other in positive ways, like via this website. This place has been a comfort to me during some very tough times. So that's a blessing, I guess.

@goodSpruce3041

Glad to hear that you find comfort on this site goodSpruce3041. I agree with you about the internet, it's a blessing but can also be a curse, however, to me it depends on how people use it (for example offering honest support or just trying to take advantage of others).
