Doing Yoga The Right Way

...See more I recently created a thread in the student support community on the importance of yoga for students (you can check it out here: https://goo.gl/yuxU2v ). So, I thought maybe I should create another thread to explain how to do yoga correctly. So, yoga is a SCIENCE and its effectiveness is based on the union of the body and mind. There have been numerous studies conducted which prove the validity of the mind-body nexus. A complete yoga session should involve the right blend of the 4 major features of yoga: 1) Yoga positions (asanas) for exercises and physical toning of the muscles 2) Meditation for mind exercise and developing concentration and awareness. 3) Breathing (Pranayama) for optimum energy balancing. 4) Relaxation as well as deep relaxation. It is a wonderful aspect of yoga that these tools are interconnected – the best results from any one aspect can be achieved ONLY when the other aspects accompany it too. How do these tools work? Yoga Positions maintain the right flexibility in your body parts. This in term promotes optimum circulation and nutrition to the body organs. Its effectiveness increases manifold when the mind is focused on the appropriate body centers (charkas). This single pointed-ness is achieved through Meditation. Yoga positions in turn develop the necessary flexibility for effective meditation. Pranayama or Breathing Techniques channel the energy flow appropriately to develop the harmony between the body and mind. Relaxation Techniques calm the mind in a superlative manner and in turn help internal body awareness. These techniques help in overcoming the deepest of neuroses and fears. One such technique is called the Yoga Nidra. As a relaxation tool, it is so powerful that 10 minutes of this technique is said to be equivalent to 4 hours of sleep. Now, some thumb rule for breathing right in yoga postures: 1) While getting into a yoga posture, stretching in the pose, or making an effort -> breathe in 2) Holding a posture -> breathe normally 3) Returning to normal position (coming out of the pose) -> breathe out 4) Pay more attention to the outgoing breath. This will help you relax more and more in the posture. Getting into the yoga pose: If you get into the yoga pose correctly, you are more likely to get the remaining flow of the posture right. All you need to do is get into the pose with awareness. Be aware of the stretch where it happens, bring your attention to the breathing pattern (whether it is relaxed or forced), and also keep the awareness on your state of mind. Awareness enhances harmony between the body, breath, and mind, giving you a deeper and complete experience. Holding the yoga pose: Relax! According to Patanjali Yoga Sutras, after putting effort to get into a yoga pose, simply let go and relax. Your yoga posture practice need not be a struggle to reach some goal or to be 100 percent perfect in the pose. To relax in the posture, simply move from the idea of doing the yoga pose ‘perfectly to doing it ‘correctly. Also, a bit of awareness on the breath and a gentle smile on the face help! Coming out of the yoga pose: Just as getting into the yoga pose correctly is important, so is coming out of it the right way. Do it with awareness, coordinating each body movement with the breath as you gently come out of the pose and move into the resting position. Follow the same sequence for coming out as for going into the posture, this time in reverse order. It is important to warm up before practicing yoga poses. Similarly, it is important to cool off before you get off the yoga mat. End your yoga posture session by resting in Corpse Pose (Shavasana) or do Yoga Nidra. Hope this helped! Let me know what you think! :D (This one's for you @Nada :D)

Importance of Yoga for Students

...See more From first graders to college seniors, students may have youth on their side — but that doesn't mean their lives are pressure-free. Hours a day sitting at desk or computer monitor and more hours doing homework cause a young body to tense up. Social and family pressures and, unfortunately, anxiety, abuse and bullying also take their toll. It all adds up to the same high stress levels that have caused the grown-up world to flock to yoga classes to find Zen. It's therefore not surprising that educators are becoming increasingly interested in providing yoga classes at school. In fact, a 2015 survey by the journal Advances in Mind/Body Medicine found yoga being offered in 940 U.S. schools. Whether you're a student or the parent of one, you'll find the benefits of yoga for students to be quite compelling. Hence, in the wake of the World Yoga Day Celebration (21st June), here are a few ways in which yoga brings about a complete mental, physical, and spiritual well-being of students: Overall Academic Improvement Stress is a major obstacle to academic achievement, and yoga's stress relief powers have been shown to boost student performance. A 2009 International Journal of Yoga study of 300 students looked at yoga's effect on the stress levels of adolescent students. After seven weeks of practicing asanas, breathing exercises and meditation, the students registered lower stress levels and higher academic performance. A 2015 study in the journal Evidence-based and Complementary Medicine of 95 high school students found that yoga was superior to regular physical education classes in protecting against a slide in GPA as the school year wore on. Improved Memory Yoga has been shown to improve memory in both adults and children, a benefit that would seem certain to improve academic performance. In a 2003 study in the Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, [http://www.ijpp.com/IJPP%20archives/2004_48_3/vol48_no3_orgnl_11.pdf] 30 children were divided into three groups: yoga camp, fine arts camp or control group. The yoga group trained in asanas, breathing exercises, meditation and cleansing rituals for 10 days. The result was a 43 percent improvement in spatial memory test scores in the yoga group. (By comparison, the fine arts and control groups showed no changes.) In another study by the journal Pediatric Physical Therapy, 108 school children were divided into 4 groups, each of whom practiced a different style of pranayama (breathing exercises). Each of the four groups saw spatial memory scores improve by an average of 84 percent. Improved Attention Span Controlling attention is a challenge for children, partly because the brain's frontal lobes, which control the power of attention, mature later than some other functions. Yoga requires attention, which can be a challenge for younger yogis, but it has also been found to enhance the ability to control attention, even in hyperactive children. In fact, studies of yoga as a palliative for ADHD have shown promise across the board. In several studies reviewed by the journal Psychiatry, children with ADHD showed decreased symptoms and in some cases were able to lower dosages of medication. Hope you enjoyed!

Are you drinking water the right way?

...See more The majority of our body is water. This water is stored both inside and outside cells to dissolve nutrients, carry waste, regulate body temperature, send brain messages, and lubricate all our moving parts. We need plenty of water to function and feel good. However, we lose a lot of water everyday through breathing, sweat (even if you dont work out), urine, and bowels. Our only choice for perfect health is to replenish our body with ample water. Ayurveda brings us indispensable guidelines for something we thought had no method: drinking water. Just like the rules for eating theres a way to drink that helps your physical body thrive. Its more than just glass to lips and chug. With a teensy bit more awareness, the way in which we drink water can seriously be a life-changer. It means not having to race to pee all the time or no more massive and uncomfortable post-meal burps or no longer feeling painfully full after eating a normal amount of food. So, the Ayurvedic way to drink water: 1. First off, sit down to drink (just as we should sit down to eat). 2. Take sips, not full-glass chugs. Small sip, swallow, breathe. Repeat. 3. Sip water throughout the day. If we chug too much water at once our body doesnt actually absorb all of it. Most of it will run right through us. 4. Drink at least room temperature water. Warm is even better. Cold and iced water literally douse the digestive fire. 5. Only sip a small amount of water with your meals. If we drink too much while we eat, our belly wont have enough room for digestive action. Remember this rule: fill your stomach 50% with food, 25% with water, and leave 25% empty for the digestive juices and process. 6. For the same reason, dont drink loads of water before or after your meals. Fill 50% with food, 25% with water, and leave 25% empty. 7. Drink when youre thirsty. Thirst is a natural urge that should be heeded. It means your body needs water. But don't wait to drink water only when you are thirsty. 8. As far as how much, were all different sizes with varied diets and lifestyles. One set rule of eight glasses a day simply can not apply to everyone. Naturally, the miraculous human body has its own built-in measuring system: thirst. If youre thirsty, drink water. When we listen to thirst cues and sip water throughout the day, well be drinking the right amount. 9. Our urine is a secondary confirmation to know if were amply hydrated. It should be fairly clear and straw colored. If its dark yellow you need to drink more. 10. Our lips are yet another indicator. If theyre dry, we might be dehydrated. The rules are so straightforward, perhaps even obvious or intuitive. But they might make a serious difference in the way we feel on a daily basis. Happy drinking!

...See more Guys, today is my second anniversary. My boyfriend and I have been in a long distance relationship for over a year now and I cannot even begin to explain how this journey has been for us. We have been through so many ups and downs...we've gone from spending every minute together to spending months apart...and it has not been easy. We've had our share of anxiety and uncertainty and there have been times when both of us have considered to end the relationship. But, even with all that, we've held on to the love that we share. We've powered through in the hope of better times in the future and I'm so glad we didn't give up. Today, at this two year milestone, I look back at our journey and I think to myself "man it's been one hell of a ride and I can't wait to see what the future holds for us!" I am happy. So what I want you guys to take away from this post is, there'll be times when you'll feel like you can't take it anymore, you'll feel like you need to give up; when you do feel like that, just pause for a second and think that whether the gain from giving up will be of more worth than staying and giving it another try. Think about what you'll lose and whether the reason over which you're losing is worthy enough. Life's too short to give up, right? Thoughts?
