Member Oath - All Encouraged to Participate

Laura November 9th, 2014

Our member community is thriving! Now that we have our group support chat rooms, our members are able to interact and support each other in new and dynamic ways. You all have done a wonderful job adjusting to these chat rooms and supporting one another.

As a member of the 7 Cups community, you are all here for a variety of specific reasons. But one thing we all have in common is our love of the 7 Cups community. Our community is a safe haven, a place to find connection, compassion, love, and support.

Our community is only as strong as it's members. We ask each member to agree to these community guidelines and interact in ways that reflect these guidelines and the 7 Cups values.

Today, I would like all members of 7 Cups of Tea to take ownership of their home here. To show your commitment, we ask that you take the 7 Cups member oath. By completing this oath, you are promising to show kindness and support to all those you interact with here. It could be in the forums, with a listener in a 1-1 chat or in the group support chat rooms.

Below this post, type out your member oath. You could cut and paste it, but I feel like this takes away from it. Typing it helps you really think through what you are committing to. Next, at the bottom, sign in with your username like this:

I, ___________________, pledge a moral oath before my fellow community members, making them my witnesses, that I read and understood the community guidelines and ensure its compliance during my stay at 7Cups.

I will treat my fellow members and listeners with compassion, patience, open-mindedness, and being non-judgmental.

I will stay respectful of everyone I encounter in the community.

I understand as a community we are here to provide and seek support.

I will be thoughtful and compassionate in my conversations.

I will use the proper channels to escalate any concerns facing during my stay in the community.

I will be open to learning from others and sharing my experiences and learning with them to grow as a community together.

I will take ownership of my own behavior in the community and understand how I will react to any situation that is my choice.

I will follow the community guidelines and support each other in building the community better for everyone.

@Laura

Hi! I have a few questions about the guidelines (and therefore the oath, sorry!). smiley

Specifically 3, 10, 12 and 13.

3) is "Aim to change and grow" (something like that, I can't remember the exact wording). Do you mean this as an overall aim or a constant aim? Sometimes I come on 7cups not to purposefully better myself, but because I'm lonely or in a dark place and would like someone to talk to; technically, I'm not trying to change and grow permanently or sufficiently or anything, but just find some temporary solace. Overall, I have the aim to change and grow but at times the aim is overshadowed by emotions or just the desire to communicate with others; like, it isn't an aim for me when I'm feeling without motivation because of my mental health, because in those times I have no aims at all really, just apathy... so? What I'm trying to say, overall, is; Is it okay to go on 7cups (and also the group chats) for reasons other than this aim to improve oneself, for reasons like you're lonely or would like someone to talk to? (I assume 'yes', but I could be wrong, so, better safe than sorry.)

10) About the flirting; is it okay to flirt with people as a joke, or a kind of platonic flirting to cheer people up, with no serious intent for romance or sexual relationships (personally, I never do online relationships because I find it so easy to hide a lot about yourself). So, say, if you call someone "darling <3" to cheer them up, because you're close friends, or flirt as a joke, is that okay? Or, should someone never flirt ever no matter the context so it's easier for the mods to understand? What I'm trying to say, is there discretion or is this a hard rule?

12) No hate to any groups based on factors like gender, race, sexuality, politics etc. Does this apply to all genders and races or just certain ones based on societal structures and societal disadvantages? An example of using a societal structure for definitions, is called intersectionality, where some people think that racism just applies to black people (or minority groups) because black people and minority groups face structural disadvantages (e.g. education, health, safety etc.) and therefore individual encounters of discrimination are made less meaningful and important to those who don't face those structural disadvantages. So, what I'm asking is if this rule applies to all people; for instance, because Christianity is often a privileged religion, is it more okay to discriminate against Christians based on religious preferance than Muslims? (Personally, I don't subscribe to intersectionality, but some people do, so I'm asking on this one not because I believe it should be okay to discriminate against anyone, but to know if it is okay to report others for it in the future, since I'll probably take the oath and re-integrate into 7 cups society :P )

13) Not being suicidal. Is this one about not saying that you are suicidal, like referencing suicidal ideations in a chat where it might trigger people, or not being suicidal, like a suicidal person isn't allowed to frequent the chats even if they don't mention this... Personally, I have to say I would be affected by the latter, and as 7 cups is one of my main support systems, I'd say I'm against this ruling. As for homicidal people, I also think it's important to give them a place to go, as it is a very mental affliction in some cases as well, and that 7 cups could be the difference between some horrific incidences for those who find they cannot move themselves or have difficulties going to crisis chats or therapy etc. If being suicidal is a deal breaker (even passively?) then I will of course, out of respect for 7 cups, vacate, but I would urge you to change this rule in the future as it could really negatively affect the people I feel you are trying to help and protect. (but that's just an opinion, of course the running of the site is up to you).

But, yes, I hope you could answer some of my concerns please smiley and I very much appreciate the free service you've all been able to provide so far. It is truly life changing in a lot of circumstances.

Best wishes,

Redsail.
