Survivor Songs -- Trigger warning
Hope this is the right part to post this. I'm just wondering what survivor songs you all know & listen to. I want to compile a traumatic experiences playlist. It'd be awesome if you could share information about what the song represents to you/what sort of survivorship it's about, too.
For me, one of my favourites is Ten Shekel Shirt's "Fragile", where the line "it's not your fault" features quite prominently. The lyrics aren't exceptionally graphic, but the video clip could be very triggering for a number of different types of trauma survivors.
@ohanasystem
I love this and I might come back later with songs in links. But I do want to say I go to a lot of the songs by Evanescence
@BurningEmber
Oooh, yes, definitely! Evanescence have a lot of songs that I relate back to traumatic experiences and the like. Thank you! Please do feel free to come back and add more any time, as many as you like, or just a few, whatever works for you! :)
There's actually a thread for this somewhere. I'll tag you in it when I find it :)
@BeeLeigh
Thank you for being so helpful!
@BeeLeigh
Thank you, and thank you for the tag! It's definitely similar, but I'm looking particularly for any songs about being a survivor of traumatic experiences, rather than specifically the uplifting ones. That's definitely a brilliant thread, though, and I'll be nabbing some songs off it, and adding my own, as well! <3
@ohanasystem
Scars To your Beautiful by Alessia Cara that's one of my favorites (says it in my profile lol)
@naturalPeace83
Thank you so much for suggesting that song! It's beautiful and I'd never heard it before. :heart:
@ohanasystem
Glad you liked it!!! hope it helps!! You can always message me if you need some extra support
I can really identify with Hurt by Christina Aguilera. It says a lot about my relationship with my father who died by suicide.
@lovelyllama13
I love that song!
@ohanasystem Just as an idea. you know we have the trauma video event running currently....Please see this link for details....how about one or all of you who have posted these songs here, put these together, with some images, video or slides to send a submission in for the video that is being put together by and for the trauma community. You may like to consider doing something like this and the submissions are open until just before midnight this friday!! https://www.7cups.com/forum/TraumaticExperiencesCommunity_60/TraumaticExperiencesCommunityCreativeExpressionsCorner_1170/TraumaCommunityVideoEvent_78024/
Does anyone else get triggered by songs??? I feel suffocated when I listen to some songs, particularly evanascence. I always relapse (self-harm) but I can't resist listening to them.
@NICK1399 i have a few songs that trigger me. My daughter was still born and i had Chasing Cars played at her funeral....now everytime i hear it I get flashbacks and just go to a very very low place. The other major one that does is it Iris by the googoo dolls, 'And I'd give up forever to touch you, 'Cause I know that you feel me somehow, You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be'......
then there are all the songs that played on the radio at hopsital etc etc.....i actually have so many trigger songs its ridicuolous
A good one that comes to mind, for me, is: I Will Survive - by Gloria Gaynor (1978)
Hm, maybe time to revive this thread? I love music, and there are a lot of good lyrics out there, some really hits you, even though its rarley a 100% match with your own experience
But here goes:
Alive - by Sia
I was born in a thunderstorm
I grew up overnight
I played alone
I played on my own
I survived
Hey
I wanted everything I never had
Like the love that comes with light
I wore envy and I hated that
But I survived
I had a one-way ticket to a place where all the demons go
Where the wind don't change
And nothing in the ground can ever grow
No hope, just lies
And you're taught to cry into your pillow
But I survived
I'm still breathing, I'm still breathing
I'm still breathing, I'm still breathing
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I found solace in the strangest place
Way in the back of my mind
I saw my life in a stranger's face
And it was mine
I had a one-way ticket to a place where all the demons go
Where the wind don't change
And nothing in the ground can ever grow
No hope, just lies
And you're taught to cry into your pillow
But I survived
I'm still breathing, I'm still breathing
I'm still breathing, I'm still breathing
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
I have made every single mistake
That you could ever possibly make
I took and I took and I took what you gave
But you never noticed that I was in pain
I knew what I wanted; I went in and got it
Did all the things that you said that I wouldn't
I told you that I would never be forgotten
And all in spite of you
And I'm still breathing, I'm still breathing
I'm still breathing, I'm still breathing
I'm alive (You took it all, but I'm still breathing)
(You took it all, but I'm still breathing)
I'm alive (You took it all, but I'm still breathing)
(You took it all, but I'm still breathing)
I'm alive (You took it all, but I'm still breathing)
(You took it all, but I'm still breathing)
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
@LoveFromSara oh this is too much...
Better Days
And you asked me what I want this year
And I try to make this kind and clear
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
'Cause I don't need boxes wrapped in strings
And designer love and empty things
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
So take these words and sing out loud
'Cause everyone is forgiven now
'Cause tonight's the night the world begins again
I need some place simple where we could live
And something only you can give
And that's faith and trust and peace while we're alive
And the one poor child who saved this world
And there's ten million more who probably could
If we all just stopped and said a prayer for them
So take these words and sing out loud
'Cause everyone is forgiven now
'Cause tonight's…
Rise Up by Andra Day is one of my most favorite positive recovery songs
here's a sneak peek at the lyrics:
You're broken down and tired
Of living life on a merry go round
And you can't find the fighter
But I see it in you so we gonna walk it out
And move mountains
We gonna walk it out
And move mountains
And I'll rise up
I'll rise like the day
I'll rise up
I'll rise unafraid
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again ...
