Trauma Support Community Check-in: Thursday-Friday, 4-5 February 2021
Hello all,
How is the day treating you so far?
Today I'd like to talk about basics. Sometimes in trauma recovery, we get tunnelvisioned on the more complex processes like dissociation and panic. We sometimes end up neglecting the basics of healthy living in general that give us the foundation of strength we need to keep fighting.
What are the basics? Also known as the physical dimension of self-care.
Eating healthy, drinking enough fluids, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, taking care of hygiene.
How does neglecting any of these for a week make you feel? Some of them, even a day of neglect can make the next day harder. I find that when I'm in a really big dip in mood, sometimes focusing on one of these basics (and literally ignoring all other responsibilities) is the first step out. I have found that neglecting these is setting up our other recovery goals for failure. I know that some days it's really really hard to brush my teeth or make sure I eat. So some days I make sure to praise myself for doing any one of these things, because they are SO important for our health and recoveries.
Another reason doing basics check ins is important, is sometimes we don't notice they're slipping. Like man I've been so moody lately... but yeah I've had 4 hours of sleep the last few nights and have only eaten junk food. Sometimes there is a very simple reason and a simple fix for things, when we take it one issue at a time. Doing these check ins are also important because they can warn about incoming spirals that you may have missed the signs for. If I'm neglecting any of these, I can be certain that a dip is coming. It warns me to check my stress levels and figure out what's going on. And focusing on fixing the basics can help jump start and bypass a potential spiral because focusing on basics with a one step at a time attitude can reduce overwhelm feelings.
It is ok to focus on basics for a day, a week, a month. It is ok to focus on you.
How do you feel about each of your basics this week?
How do you feel when you neglect any of these basics?
Is neglecting basics a warning sign for you?
What is one (small) thing you can do today to give your basics the focus they deserve?

How do you feel about each of your basics this week? Getting the basics right consistently isn't easy. I've been having difficulties with sleeping, it was especially bad yesterday as I had a big headache. I feel like each factor also affects another, if I slip on one (eg eating well) it's easy for me to start slipping more and more - which is not good!
How do you feel when you neglect any of these basics? I don't think I'm fully aware of just how bad it is for me until it happens for some time, but by then it's slipped a lot and I start feeling a lot worse. Eg if I don't exercise for a couple of days, then I feel achy and I wonder why.
Is neglecting basics a warning sign for you? I track the basics as a way to be more mindful of them so I don't let it slip too much if it does happen.
What is one (small) thing you can do today to give your basics the focus they deserve? I haven't done my exercises for the day yet so I want to do that later.
How do you feel about each of your basics this week? I get stuff done, but even basics can be issues in my living situation

@Hoxenos, hi
How do you feel about each of your basics this week?
These basics are the little, big things in our lives.
How do you feel when you neglect any of these basics?
Irritated and a bit lethargic.
Is neglecting basics a warning sign for you?
Yeah. It literally affects my mood and movement.
Have a nice day.
@Hoxenos
How do you feel about each of your basics this week? not great. I've been staying up late, drinking a lot of alcohol, haven't left the house in a few days because it's cold, grey and rainy and we're on full lockdown where I am so there's a curfew. Not taking care of my basics feels like defiance; it's the only thing I can control. Like I want to hit rock bottom on purpose.
How do you feel when you neglect any of these basics? The same as the day before, fluxuating between rage and sadness.
Is neglecting basics a warning sign for you? Some of them, I always maintain a certain level of hygeine....I have an obsessive morning and night face routine that I do so even if I don't shower that day I'll do that. If I fall asleep without doing that, or brushing my teeth, I know it's gone too far.
What is one (small) thing you can do today to give your basics the focus they deserve? I can try to sleep earlier, but I don't see it happening.
How do you feel about each of your basics this week?
I feel like I am getting better at taking care of myself. With a lockdown in place I have been able to focus more on me. I do have trouble sleeping because I get really bad nightmares.
How do you feel when you neglect any of these basics?
When I don't get enough sleep I am easily irritated.
Is neglecting basics a warning sign for you?
Yes.
What is one (small) thing you can do today to give your basics the focus they deserve?
Taking a nap.
Brushing my teeth, washing my face right now
