Always have had a night active mind. It's rarely racing thoughts, but I can't just shut my mind off. I just have to actively direct my thoughts to things that lead to sleep instead of having a less purposeful thought stream.

@AffyAvo sorry to hear that. What kinds of things do you direct your mind to that help you get to sleep?

@soulsings I don't mind it. I can typically focus it, I just can't shut my mind off completely (is this a thing other people do? Sometimes it seems like my husband can!)

For sleep, various things, numbers is a long-time one (which @MistyMagic finally clued me in last year that is meditation and seems obvious in hindsight!). Others are thinking about relaxing places I have been, body relaxation, focusing on the state of my mind and how it feels to fall asleep. I also like podcasts or audiobooks. Sometimes I need to mentally organize a plan if I find my mind drifting to to-dos.

@AffyAvo hehehe yes, there are so many simple things we all do naturally and don't realise that the have a meditative quality.

We should really carry on that chat and post it!

I've been suffering from an over active mind at night for some time now....good, quality, sleep is something that has been missing from my life for a while now.....unfortunately, other than sleep aids, (that I don't take because I don't want to become dependent on them), I haven't been able find a way to quiet or turn off my mind so I can get good, quality, sleep.

I'm following this thread for some good ideas......

@CyclingThroughLife I am sorry you have an active mind at night. I find gentle instrumental music calms me down on youtube.

Another trick that works for me is to follow my breath. Maybe I get so bored I go to sleep!

Grounding the energy helps with things like 5 minute Tai Chi on on youtube.

When, I have late night thoughts. I tend to change, my thoughts to good thoughts, that relaxes me. I sort the thoughts out. And fall asleep.

@starryCandy6123 that is a great idea.

Sometimes I start listing things I am grateful for and that helps me drift off.

I don't think 'overactive' quite covers it, I mean usually yes but lately it's been getting a lot worse. I go days in row with barely an hour of sleep...then at night, my mind is going so fast and I don't know how to calm it, I just let the thoughts be cos what else am I to do

@DkIfINeedHelpOrSleep I do mantras. You can make up your own or repeat tradional ones like Om or Om Mani Padme Hum very softly so I do not disturb anyone.

@soulsings turn on relaxing lights, or dinner than normal, a playlist of relaxing music I put together. Light a few candles, have a hot drink, and also sleeping meds😁 when I sleep I can outdo a sloth😎 and don't worry when I fall asleep my carers turn of the candles😁

  • Do you suffer from an overactive mind at nighttime?

Sometimes, not always.

  • What helps you to quiet racing thoughts so you can get a peaceful sleep?

1. Putting myself in a quiet and calm, peaceful, relaxed state of mind. It’s kinda like putting your mind to sleep if it were an actual person and you were the parent.

2. Telling myself no more thinking. That’s over for now. Save the rest for another day bc it’s time for a peaceful relaxing night of sleep now. It typically works.

  • What helps you to quiet racing thoughts so you can get a peaceful sleep?

Sometimes it happens that my mind gets caught up with something that needs to be taken care of so I will either write it down or find something easy, a small step to do the next day. This will give me peace of mind because I have a plan, even if it's a tiny one 😀.

Actually, lately I've started using the mindfulness / guided meditations from 7cups to help me fall asleep or at least calm down at night. I just choose one at random and listen to it :) Works really well for me.

@soulsings

  • Do you suffer from an overactive mind at nighttime?

Sometimes. Depends on what is happening in life that day and the next.

  • What helps you to quiet racing thoughts so you can get a peaceful sleep?

We have already mentioned meditation. Simple methods that require no concentration or effort and that can be used before the mind drifts off.

Listening to books, nothing exciting or with different voices but calming, peaceful words and stories. Or music. Playlists that are soothing and that we can use over and over do we get trained that peace and gentle sounds mean sleep.

But clearing down all the noisy thoughts is the main thing. Writing them down in quick brief notes to remind us in the morning and reassure us we won't forget them so our mind can rest.

Soothing teas also can help, lavender, valerian, orange blossom and rooibos  are my faves right now.

@soulsings

Yes, I have an overactive mind and it is worse at night. I distract by working on my crafts till I feel safe enough to go to sleep if at all,
