Bug fix: Profiles symbols issue
I know many of you have been affected by the symbols and emojis issue across the site. This is where weird characters/symbols have replaced emojis, text or formatting. This bug snuck in as part of a routine system update last week and our tech team have been working hard to fix it. The good news is that this bug has been fixed across forum posts, about sections in forums and in your journals.
A tricky one to fix is where it has occurred in profile pages. To fix this one, we will be reverting all profiles to how they were on Friday 6th October last week. Any changes you may have made to your profile since then will unfortunately be lost. I do apologise for this, but its the only way to remove the bug from all profiles. If you have made changes, I recommend you copy and save these changes off site so you can bring them back after the fix.
If you are a new user and joined 7 Cups after Friday the 6th, your profile will be unaffected.
This update/fix is expected to take place tomorrow on Friday 13th October. Wish us luck that it goes ok! I will post an update here once it is completed.
[Update, 13 October: The profile fix rollout has been complete. You should now be able to use and edit your profiles as normal]
@Jon7Cups
Thank you Jon! 👏 😊
Thanks everyone for your patience. The profile fix has been rolled out and seems to be working well. Your profiles should now be back to their lovely selves. You can make edits and changes to your profile as normal again.
We are aware of the bug affecting other parts of the site (like chat) and are working our way through it. Thanks for your support.
@Jon7Cups Fantastic, well done to you and the Team!

@Jon7Cups
Yayy thank youu so much, team!🥳
@Jon7Cups You are doing good John
Cool!
Has anyone tried to change their profile picture? I wanted to dress my rat up for Halloween but it tells me 403 forbidden 😕
@mytwistedsoul this is probably because the spam scanner thinks its an image that violates our guidelines. It can be overly sensitive to violations which we've found to be better than not sensitive enough. Maybe try a completely different image as a test to check that the function works correctly and let me know if it doesn't?
@Jon7Cups I actually tried the same image and now it went through. So - Idk lol. But thank you for your reply!
Hello Jon, I'd like to share that I can't edit my profile picture even though I've allowed its permission from my app settings, is there an idea of why that's happening?
@Skippz21 have a look at my reply above to see why this might be happening
I appreciate it, apologies I wasn't paying attention, keep up the great work.
@Jon7Cups
Thank you Jon! 😊 ❤️ I appreciate your approach here on the platform! I really appreciate that you communicate with us, you are here to help us, you hear us and you care about us and our feelings!
This for me is quite refreshing and I'm enjoying your leadership style.
Many years prior I had kind of felt like...things will happen, a fix is made and so of course, other things will be a challenge to go back in and code. I picked up on that early that if I saw a change in a positive direction somewhere I had to wait for the other "shoe to drop" and knew that if I didn't see it quickly enough others would see it and be upset and I would hear about it.
No communication was happening so many were angry, "stompy" and mad and saw the Dev team as our arch nemesis, lol 😊 (Us against them concept when we truly are a team) *sighs*
In my roles, yes, it made things more difficult as an extra effort was needed for me to do my best to help to keep others calm, provide the bug ticket link, it was disruptive to the rooms and took a bit of additional effort to teach others about empathy and explain that those on the Dev team are human beings too and they are trying their best as well.
Thank you for being transparent, helpful and real! A real live human being that is here, cares and it helps others to take a humanistic approach to the site as well as changes on it. There is a human being behind these screens and you engaging with us in that way is helpful. 😊
Thank you for "showing up" and caring about your "internal customer". In years past it seemed as if a change was made and with no thought as to what else would happen because of that. It felt like an attitude of, I did what I was asked to and so now, job over. We were left to our own devices, had to figure it out and just go fix things ourselves. "You get what you get and you don't throw a fit" hahah hahaha 😊
Thank you for taking ownership! Thank you for seeing it through! Thank you for "putting humpty dumpty back together again". Thank you for making my profile page "whole" again and putting it right back to the way that I like as well as everyone elses! It really means a lot to me!
*high fives* 😊 big *hugs* ❤️ and keep rockin' this house! Weeeeeeeeee weeeeeee! 😊
@SparkyGizmo thank you for the support! It honestly goes a long way and helps us to keep going. Its easy to forget that the team behind the scenes are real folks who try their hardest to make this the most supportive site on the internet. We may not always get it right, but we won't stop trying!
@Jon7Cups
❤️❤️❤️
All - we continue to make progress finding and squashing this annoying bug. The following areas should now be largely fixed - listener reviews, path steps and expert articles. The last bugs left are to do with chat and we hope to fix this week. Thanks again for the support and patience.
Update: the message preview in chats should now be working again. If you send a message you should see it populate the preview section as per normal. Historical previews could not be repopulated which is why it might look empty right now.
@Jon7Cups Thanks so much for the update. Jon, I used the 'Quote' option in my profile and the formatting seems messed up? Is this new function being worked on as part of the splitting up profiles into sections?
