An enhanced editor

RarelyCharlie January 9th, 2019

Here are instructions for enhancing the editor we use in forums and feeds: How to: Enhance the editor

This was announced before, but I'm repeating it here because it came up again in connection with creating tables in forum posts.

At present this solution is experimental, and I know some things don't work. Please use this thread or PM me to report issues, even though I can't guarantee I'll be able to fix them all.

Version 4.0 is now available in the usual place.

For anyone who hasn't used it before, instructions are here: Enhance the editor (I'm sorry they are a bit out of date—I'll update them soon.)

This new version is intended to work again after the recent forum changes, but I haven't tested it much. It also adds Reply buttons to any posts that don't have them, and it adds links to all posts (so you can copy the link and paste it in another post, or bookmark it).

This is still work in progress, but version 4.1 is now in the usual place.

  • The Reply button in the pinned top post is really Post to Thread, not Reply, so I renamed it Comment and put another Comment button at the bottom of each page for convenience.
  • The missing Reply buttons are once again restored. (This worked for a while and then broke.) Note that these buttons do not cause replies-to-replies to be nested beyond five levels, because there is a rumour that more than five levels can cause server problems.
  • On posting a new post, you are now taken to the new post (even if it's on another page).
  • The buttons in the editor look more like the buttons in the thread.
  • Editing an existing post has progressed from "this can't possibly work" to "this looks as if it just might work" but there's probably more to be done.

@RarelyCharlie Thanks so much for all your work. I have a comment to make (lol) the comment button at the bottom gives me an edit thread box? I am a global forum mentor so I have that right but shouldn't it have gone to a reply box?

@theriverissinging Yep thanks River! Charlie has added one at the bottom too, and that one was the one I tried out. Have you got the enhanced editor too?

@MistyMagic That's really annoying. I'm not sure I can fix it as I don't have any edit access myself.

Version 4.4 fixes a bug in post links.

Post editing is turned off again because it doesn't seem to work and I don't have enough access to debug it.
