An enhanced editor
Here are instructions for enhancing the editor we use in forums and feeds: How to: Enhance the editor
This was announced before, but I'm repeating it here because it came up again in connection with creating tables in forum posts.
At present this solution is experimental, and I know some things don't work. Please use this thread or PM me to report issues, even though I can't guarantee I'll be able to fix them all.
@RarelyCharlie - one thing I have noticed is that if I create tables, I cannot edit them later on. Is that an option that still needs to be added?
This is so awesome! Sometimes when the forum/feed glitches, this kind of toolbar shows up but I'm glad that I could install it to have it permanent.
PS. Looking forward to seeing the pizza emoji added to the emoji list!
PPS. The toolbar doesn't show up anymore if we're going to make some changes or editings in our or someone else's forum posts.
Interesting! Yes, the default toolbar has all the buttons, then when the 7 Cups toolbar loads it hides most of them, so if a glitch prevents the 7 Cups toolbar from loading you see the default.
OK, pizza is on its way Any other requests, anyone?
I'm working on the editing problem. Right now it partly works. The toolbar appears and it doesn't trash any tables it finds. The next thing to do is make it save the changes.
@Erato
I mean, if we can make requests...any chance of a purple heart? :D
I noticed something yesterday but am now forgetting what it was...when I remember, I'll post in here.
Oh, and I saw someone quote text (I think), but wasn't sure how to do that myself - is that in here?
Really appreciate all your work here!!!
@RarelyCharlie
@Anomalia
is that in here?
You mean like this? Yes, its a part of the new editor, by using the Block Quote Symbol, next to the indent tab.
OK, a purple heart is on the list.
@Anomalia
Woohoo!!!
@RarelyCharlie
Progress towards editing posts!
Version 0.6 is now available. Go back to 7 Cups - Forum inline editor and press the green button to update it. This version should avoid trashing tables and so on when you edit a post, but I can't be sure that edits are saved correctly because I don't have the authority to do that. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will work...
@RarelyCharlie - congrats! working ok now (editing)
What a relief!
@SoulfullyAButterfly
When I click to try to edit old post it won't let me now that I installed this new code. Can you please figure out why since I need to be able to edit old post with my role. Thanks
@RarelyCharlie @SoulfullyAButterfly
I'm having the same issue! Is there a way for me to revert to the previous version, or will I need to uninstall the add-in for the time being? Totally okay if that's the answer - I know that you're busy with other things, too, just figured I'd check :)
To clarify a bit - when I click the edit button it opens up the ability to write a post, rather than editing the post that is already there - almost as though it's reading edit and reply the same way, perhaps?
@DanaMH @RarelyCharlie
And a further addendum - it seems to be different on different posts! Some within this thread I can open in edit form as normal and others it opens as a blank post. The plot thickens!
@Anomalia
@Anomalia - oh just tested on 2 of my forums and I can still edit okay, have you tried uninstalling and resinstalling?
@Anomalia actually I've found a fix whilst helping @DanaMH - your browser may somehow be the culprit! I was using Edge and never had the error you both faced, so when Dana just tried on a separate browser apart from Chrome, it works just fine!
@RarelyCharlie
@Anomalia - RarelyCharlie is working on the code since I can't even save on Firefox now.
@RarelyCharlie @SoulfullyAButterfly
Good to know! Though since I use Chrome for all of my stuff, I may just need to uninstall until it works in Chrome. Thanks for letting me know!
@SoulfullyAButterfly
@Anomalia - it is getting speedily fixed up so thats good news. and may try clearing cache etc. and seeing if that works out meanwhile! you are welcome.
@RarelyCharlie - found another error whilst experimenting the editor... I tried the Red Button and Marker "Styles" alongside the Box one, but once I posted the forum post, only the Box one remained and the other styles did not get implemented.
OK. Thank you for testing these. It's possible 7 Cups filters them. I'll put it on my list to investigate, but I want to focus on the editing problems first.
@SoulfullyAButterfly
@RarelyCharlie - sure, good luck.
I regret to say I've not been able to track down the cause of the editing problems yet. I wonder, is there any legit way I can get temporary authorization to edit in some forum? So far I've just been trying to simulate editing, and when I do that it seems to work, so I can't actually observe it going wrong.
@RarelyCharlie - perhaps @Anomalia / @Mel can help as Forum Ambassadors? if not, I'm sure you can ask one of the Community Managers.
I've reached out to Charlie separately to figure out a plan for him to be able to have test access temporarily, so hopefully that helps! :)
@SoulfullyAButterfly
@Anomalia - great thanks!
@RarelyCharlie
I can give you access to 35+ temporarily
@DanaMH hi! Please, at all cases, dont give badges or list people in leader lists without them being trained or accepted for the role! Even if we know its Charlie, and trust theyll use it for this trial and not misuse it, we need to know first and be aware!
@Mel
ok - thanks
Version 0.7 is now available. Go back to 7 Cups - Forum inline editor and press the green button to update.
This version can edit posts (when I try it). I checked in Chromium, Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari.
Thank you for arranging access, @Anomalia If you and others can confirm that it's now working, then I will not need access any more.
By the way, this version has a new quirk—the toolbar sometimes appears in the wrong place—but I wanted to get the editing working before looking into anything else.
It is looking like it is working from the things I was testing. I did get an error but think it was on the server side but it saved what I was doing when I refreshed the page. Thanks for looking into the code.
@RarelyCharlie
@RarelyCharlie awesome, seems great on Edge for now - and a plus: The Red Button Style also worked!!
wohoo I see this too: so @Erato can now throw us a party.
omg this is so exciting!
@SoulfullyAButterfly
Thank you to Charlie as well! @RarelyCharlie
This is great, thank you!!!
@RarelyCharlie
If the quick you're referring to is the toolbar appearing on top or in the bottom of the post editing box, I like it. If I write a long post and I scroll down, the toolbar becomes visible and I can use it without having to scroll all the way back up.
@RarelyCharlie
Be the change you wish to see in the world.
I just uploaded version 0.8, which :
- Fixes (I hope) the bug that sometimes made the toolbar show up in the wrong place.
- Automatically converts some common text smileys, so you can type :D and get
- Optionally puts a plain text signature at the bottom of every post. (Set it on your My Settings page.)
- Adds two smileys: Cookie, and Bowl with spoon.
As always, go back to 7 Cups - Forum inline editor to upgrade if it doesn't do it automatically.
For the list of text smileys common to chats and posts, see the Emoji section in the How to.
Charlie
@RarelyCharlie - exciting news, thank you for this update
Thank you, charlie! I just wish that the signature would also appear even in the old or previous posts/responses we've made once we've turned it on.
@RarelyCharlie
Era
Ah yes, that would be better, but unfortunately I can't do that from outside 7 Cups
@Erato
Charlie
Aww, that's okay! I understand the limited access and ability to do make changes.
@RarelyCharlie
Era
Hi, I was trying the code prior and just installed this code also and when I try to put a url in a forum it is adding an image and removing the : and 1 of the / as shown below. Can you please fix this? Thanks
@RarelyCharlie
Finally got to install the script! So trying things out
(that's my all time fav emoji!)
So a quote?
I love it!

- 2

- yay!
@Mel wohoo welcome to the party 😎
I just uploaded version 0.9, which protects URLs so you can write https://www.7cups.com/ and not get a worried face in the middle of it.
By the way, you can protect anything from getting converted to emoji by changing the colour of part of it. For example, :) doesn't get converted to because the colon is dark blue. But this trick is not at all obvious.
Version 0.9 also fixes a few things that were going wrong when posting feeds.
As before, you can upgrade here.
Charlie
oh wow i wish this would fix that problem in 1-1 chats ! the majority of links i give end up with an emoji in the middle so the trick is to try and find what might turn into a smiley in the link and make part of it colored either the eyes or mouth and it wont do that? because that is a constant problem for me i wonder if its possible to fix smileys in urls in the chats or if thats just something that cant be changed
@RarelyCharlie

Testing code and save button.

@RarelyCharlie
@RarelyCharlie
What am I doing wrong after the install it still has the face when I make the link active in new post? The Save button on an edit is really slow that I think the web page is broken and it won't even save.
Oh, it looks like something else is going wrong. I'm investigating.

@RarelyCharlie
As soon as I saw the butterfly, I thought of you!

?
Love the signature!!!!
@Blaze

I was already a fan of your work, now it's gotten out of control, haha!
My computer is in a language other than English, and the default information (Styles, Font, Size) are in that language. Doesn't bother me, but maybe it's worth mentioning.
I'm absolutely in love with the signature feature, and all else is awesome. Thank you for this.
I feel tempted to ask for more animal-related emoji, and maybe a fire emoji?
Be the change you wish to see in the world.
Ah, the language wasn't set, so I guess that would make it use the computer's language sometimes. I'll set it to English.
OK, fire is like this and I'm happy to add a row of animals, but which animals? Also, some animals come in more than one form, like a whole pig a pig face and a pig nose . So the zoo will quickly get out of control! If you'd like to copy and paste a selection of up to 15 animals (or anything else) from here, I'll add a new row for them.
@Blaze
Charlie
So much responsibility.
Here you go:
Touch to choose, I had to think of what animals would be most used by the people I know on 7 Cups! But I feel if there's any emoji in particular I want to use, I can always go to this list and copy-paste.
Also, I love being able to read the forum posts while writing my own post. Thank you for that feature.
@RarelyCharlie
Be the change you wish to see in the world.
OK, those are all in the next version.
I originally did this just to be able to scroll up to see what I'm replying to Discovering the extra buttons was an unexpected bonus.
@Blaze
Charlie
when you say next version, do we need to do anything or does it automatically update? Sorry for the untechy questions lol
@RarelyCharlie
@Blaze woohoo!
Listening .... One Step At A Time
Oh, I'm sorry that wasn't clear. The next version (0.10) is in preparation but there's a bug I want to fix before I upload it. Could be a few days.
I think it automatically updates, but I'm not sure. You can check by clicking the Tampermonkey icon, choosing Dashboard, going to the Settings tab, and scrolling down to Script Updates. Mine says Every Day but I can't remember whether that's the default or I set it myself.
You can also check for userscript updates manually from the Tampermonkey menu.
You can also watch for notifications in this thread.
@MistyMagic
Charlie
@RarelyCharlie - I can confirm that for me, I have to personally update it so yes these thread notifications are a good way. Good luck with fixing latest bug!
