Our 8th Birthday Reflection: Service to the Community
As a child grows up and becomes a teen and then a young adult, you can begin to see more of their unique personality emerge. Their strengths become more defined, you get a better sense of how they see and interact with the world. And, as a parent or mentor, you get better at supporting them on their life journey. This happens because you have a better understanding of what things help and what things do not help; and because the person is more mature, is better at modifying and integrating help, and knows how to step forward in stronger ways.
A similar process has happened with 7 Cups over the last several years. We, collectively, are the mentors or parents of the community. We can see that our community has become stronger, more defined, and clear. We know who we are now.
There are many ways that you can see this happening. One is the ecosystem video that highlights how 7 Cups work together. Another is the new app. A third is how our various training programs have matured and become aligned in the Academy. A fourth is the Center for Open Research and Impact (CORI). A 5th is our growth path builder, a 6th is sharing circles, a 7th is the strength of our sub-communities, and an 8th is our remarkable leadership teams. There are dozens of examples that I could point you towards. They all show how our lines and boundaries have become sharper.
In the more distant past, 7 Cups sometimes felt like a leaky bucket. We would constantly pour water in, but we had leaks in our bucket and some of the water would spill out. We’d try to walk the bucket over to the garden, but a lot of the water would leak out along the way. Fortunately, now, most of those holes have now been patched. The water we pour in can now be carried over and used to water the garden that is our community in more deliberate ways.
We have endless compassion and care as a community. Following our visual journey, the cup (or bucket) is always full and we are now able to grow new plants and vegetables in our garden. We even have a few picnic tables under a big Shady Tree. There are baskets of fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots and watermelons to share, and everyone is welcome to partake! Not a single person is left out.
It feels really good to be here. I knew that we would get here, but there have also been plenty of challenges along the way. We have overcome each and every one of those challenges. I'm super proud of us!
I think the simplest way to capture how we have evolved is with one word: service. 7 Cups works because we serve one another through our community. The community is the heart, and the stronger our heart, the more people we can help, the more initiatives we can launch, and the more effective we can become.
To start this 8th year, I’d like us all to think about how we can better serve our community. These can be little things that might not seem like they will make much of a difference, but we should still name them and try them, because they might indeed make a big difference. Let's capture all of our ideas, big and small, and prioritize them. Please share your thoughts through this survey.Happy Birthday to you all! Thank you for working alongside me and one another to help 7 Cups mature and grow into this amazing community. We are flourishing and it is because we have all chosen – in small and in big ways - to serve one another. What a remarkable community! I appreciate you all!
Let's keep watering our garden!

🌹🌹🌹 HAPPY 😊 BIRTHDAY 7CUPS FAMILY 🌹🌹🌹
Dear Glen:
I want to express in my name, in that of the many people that I know feel the same, and (maybe with some pretentiousness) in that of the whole community, our immense gratitude to you for having created 7 Cups.
I also think of 7 Cups as an ecosystem, but in the same way the PlayStore or the Appstore are. These provided the environment for thousands of developers to create amazing apps, most for free, and connected them with their millions of users. This model allowed for the creation of something hugely bigger and better than even these big companies could have done just by themselves.
In the same way, you, Glen, created and nurtured an environment that attracts and bonds thousands of people to help each other in the way and at the time they need it the most, with a large impact in bettering their lives.
I have seen miracles in 7 Cups. I see daily the powerful therapeutic effect of confiding the innermost hurtful secrets to people that "have been there" and really understand. I see hundreds of people that are severely stigmatized "in the outside world" and can only be themselves here, in 7 Cups. And have friends to which talk about their real issues. They live meaningful lives here! That alone would be worth more than I can conceive of. I don't have words for all this, only awe.
Also people getting here out of horrible nightmares or even flashbacks, getting in touch in the middle of the night with someone on the other side of the world... This is amazing! Though it happens all the time.
And so many more wonderful things...
Not to mention that all of this is for free, so it is available to any person with a cellphone, no matter their income.
Maybe a problem with 7 Cups is that it is so good, so effective as therapy (for some during a crisis, for others, long term), that it is incomprehensible seen from outside. I would have never imagined it, to the minimum degree, until I got involved. How communicate this truth to the world? This is a huge challenge.
Another great challenge, faced by all fast-growing, successful organizations, is increasing scale while keeping or improving quality. We have a personal responsibility at all levels for that. The Admin team is also optimizing the organization all the time.
Both challenges converge in one and the same mission: helping as many possible people in emotional distress, all over the world.
There is almost no limit to the growth of 7 cups. We are almost eight billion on this planet. There are literally hundreds of millions of people that could greatly benefit from 7 Cups. They need it and don't have anything else like this.
But how to grow enough, with the same quality, and at the same time reach them, letting them know and trust 7 Cups for their emotional issues?
The Red Cross and AA started small, and without the benefit of technology. 7 Cups is young by historical standards.
On its 8th birthday, let's wish 7 Cups a long, healthy life, always growing and improving, for the benefit of millions of fellow human beings all over the world!
Cheers to that!
Marcelo.
@GlenM Thank you for writing down this reflection and giving us an opportunity to share our own reflections!
It feels unreal to be celebrating our 8th birthday! 7 Cups has grown so much in the past few years. I agree that there is added alignment and great coordination with each other. I completely agree that service is the magic ingredient! Additionally, I believe we have become better at coming together for our mission and vision.
It has been incredible seeing the growth throughout the years. Regardless of how we grow, one thing remains constant and that is the care and compassion that exists within the community. All of our users, whether listeners, members, Leaders, or admins, are the reason why we are here celebrating our 8th birthday! So give yourself a pat on the back and join the celebrations as we are celebrating us and we are celebrating you!
