BOOK CHOSEN

The Firm

by John Grisham

Would anyone be interested in picking a book, movie, or show to read or watch and then discussing themes, plot elements, characters, etc., here? I don't have a lot of free time but when I do, and to keep my brain distracted, I read and watch psychological thrillers and/or dramas. It'd be great to have discussion with people who are interested πŸ’š

For everyone who has finished, what do you think comes next for the characters in the book? Did you like the ending, or would you have rewritten it?

@Help127. Endings are so hard. I can’t think of anything to change the ending to this book. I guess the characters could live peaceful lives for sometime. Maybe they could eventually be found by the bad guys!

@adventurousBranch3786 I think the ending probably worked out in the best possible way for the main characters. What is interesting is that there was a tv show that came out, maybe 10-15 years ago, that was a follow-up to the book/movie. It showed where the characters (Mitch and family) were and what they were doing. I remember watching the first episode; I just cannot remember the details.

It’s interesting to know that there was a series. I might check it out if I can find it.

@adventurousBranch3786 I had completely forgotten about it, and then my question and reading the responses reminded me. I'd be interested in watching it as well.

I think it's hard to do a tv series after a movie, mainly because it is rarely, if ever, with the same actors. Netflix did it with the tv version of The Lincoln Lawyer, and I had trouble at first with the character transition, but it is a good series.

@Help127. I just watched about half of the movie. My biggest problem is that I have never been a Tom Cruise fan! He has the right look just as the book described though. I do love Holly Hunter and Gene Hackman. They do seem to follow pretty much along with the book except for a few small changes. There is one thing that I couldn’t remember. Did Mitch tell Abby about the night with the other woman in the book?

@Help127

book:

Very long

It was a very good book are long. I don’t know if I could read the other ones in the series. There was a lot of detail about legal jargon crime and backstabbing. When I wake back up I will probably watch the movie I did this is part of a book club. Thank you 7 cups community for allowing me the chance to review this book. The moral of the story is don’t trust anyone. Also money is it everything. Meaning you can’t let greed Control your life?

The movie:
You have so many differences from the book. I don't even think they used Half of the book. It was a good representation however Terrence was not who I expected him to be. The movie moved so fast. And Avery was not that kind in the book I'm not trying to give anything away sorry took so long. I love it but it was so much different than the book. Thanks for letting me join.

@DonaldK I agree with you on many points! I think the main lesson of the book/movie is not to get blindsided by money, and not to let the desire to live comfortably turn to greed.

I am guessing that they changed the ending to the movie partially to simplify it some, as I think the complexity found in the book might have been difficult to replicate as well onscreen. I think some of the other changes were interesting choices as well, such as Avery's character being portrayed a bit differently in the movie. I might watch the movie a second time through, because there are a few things I have questions about, especially regarding how believable a couple of the situations are.

I'm really enjoying discussing with you all. Thank you!πŸ™‚

Hi everyone, I thank you all sincerely for participating in the book and movie discussion. I really enjoyed it πŸ™‚I would like to choose another book and do a discussion about it, but in another post, so it doesn't get confused with this one. It might take me a while to write the other post and get started, but I want to ask if anyone here would like to be tagged to participate in the next book. I'm thinking about House Rules by Jodi Picoult, which was mentioned before. It's a lot less legal thriller, more mystery/suspense/drama, with a lot of character insight and development. Please let me know if you are interested. Thank you again so much! (Just fyi, my screen name might be changing soon, as I've put in a request.)
