Medicines?
Hi everyone, Is there any medication to treat BPD? Is it worthless to talk to a psychiatrist instead of a counselor or no? Thank you.
I smoke weed. Or manage it with thc drinks i just take enough where I’m in a good calm mood not too much not too little. It’s healthier than taking prescriptions and talking to useless people.
@alekseiii I'm not an expert, so I looked this up. The official guidelines here in the UK say:
You should not usually be offered medication specifically to treat borderline personality disorder or for any related symptoms or behaviour (such as self-harm, unstable moods and risky behaviour).
However, here in the UK it would be unusual for a counsellor to be experienced in diagnosis. More usually it would be better to talk to a psychiatrist so that the diagnosis of BPD is confirmed by an expert before deciding on treatment. There are some other conditions that can appear to be very similar to BPD, but the treatment for those conditions is different.
I've spoken to therapists (in real life) about this kind of issue. They told me that if they suspect someone has BPD, they refer them to a psychiatrist to confirm the diagnosis before planning what treatment to provide.

I agree @RarelyCharlie, you need a psychiatrist to diagnose BPD. Often, however, people present in a complex way with features of anxiety and depression often presenting and being treated first, so people with BPD are sometimes on multiple drugs before they consider a BPD / EUPD diagnosis.
There's nothing wrong with seeing a psychiatrist, think of them as a doctor who specialises in mental health.
Just wanted to let you know that psyq drugs aren't innocent. It has especially hurt me psychically. I'm in a very long and hard proces of withdrawal. Try to find natural ways first. Hope you read this. Much peace and wisdom.
Hi there. There are medications out there that can help manage the symptoms of BPD depending on which areas of the BPD you feel you need most help with managing. I personally have BPD and I've tried 3 different medications before I found one that helps. Talking to a psychiatrist would be beneficial, I believe a psychologist may be better. Counciling in the long run would be good, as that's someone who you can talk to, if you don't have any close family or friends that you can confide it, or don't wish to burden with your problems. If able, talk your doctor about medications that would help with BPD. DBT is one of the most effective treatments for BPD, although it can be costly and long waiting lists, depending on where you live in the world Hope this helps take care 🙂
@alekseiii
Five major treatments (types of psychotherapy) have been established as evidence-based treatments for BPD:
* dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
* mentalization-based treatment (MBT)
* schema-focused therapy (SFT)
* transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP)
* and systems training for emotional predictability and problem solving (STEPPS)
In contrast, clincal trials testing psychopharmacologic treatments (medications) have not yielded consistent results. Therefore, to as of today, there is no medication that is officially used to treat BPD.
However, it is a good idea to talk to your healthcare providers about treating comorbid conditions with medications (for example Depression or Anxiety.)
