[OLD THREAD] Project Achieve Your Goals - 18+

Laura December 2nd, 2015

Setting goals is the easy part...reaching them can be more challenging!

Having someone support you in reaching your personal goals can be incredibly helpful. Today, wed like to announce a new community program aimed at helping you reach your goals.

Well need both listeners & members to make this happen! Here is how you can get involved in this project:

Members:

Step 1: Post a goal youd like to work towards in this thread. Be specific! Goals work great when you can make them measurable. Usually that involves a time period and a number of times. Additionally, you want to start by making goals achievable. Do not make your goals too hard or you will grow frustrated and not be able to reach them. Much better to make them easy to accomplish to build your confidence right from the start.

examples:

I want to cook dinner for myself 3 nights per week

I want to go to the gym 1 time per week

Take 3 growth path steps every day

Step 2: Specify if you'd like a listener to check in on you 1 or 2x/week.

Step 3: Wait for a listener to reply to you! They will reply and let you know they will support you reach this goal.

Step 4: PM this listener to get going! They will not be able to support you by checking in on you if you do not first PM them. If you find that a listener has not followed up, then please post again and request another listener.

Step 5: Post your progress each week in this thread and also on your feed so more people can support you in achieving your goals.

Step 6: Once you have achieved your goal and the new behavior or habit has been consistent for 21 days, then apply for the Goal 1 Badge. We'll likely have several goals, so there will be Goal 2, Goal 3 etc. (Feel free to help us come up with better names!)

Listeners:

Step 1: Wait for members to share their goals in this thread! When you see a goal/member youd like to support, reply to their forum post and let them know!

Step 2: Once this member has messaged you and established connection over PM, its your job to better understand the members goal, why its important and what you can do to best support them.

Step 3: Make a commitment! Check-in with this member twice per week and enquire about the goal!

Step 4: Let us know how you and your member are doing! In this thread, we will track your progress as team. Post here to let us know how it's going!

Step 5: After your member has reached their goal, let us know and apply for the Coach badge. More details on this soon!

I want to practice personal hygiene, regardless of whether I am or am not taking my medication, 2-3 times a week. Speaking of which, I would like to aspire to take my medication daily with the exception of my ADHD meds as a way to regulate my appetite.

I want to finish my Java programming, one hour a week, in the next month. I plan to continue learning other languages.

I want to keep an organized calendar of medical practitioners I am to see -and what I am to do before and after seeing these professionals.

I have a number of goals, as they are quiet different, all of them, different listeners can help me if they want to. Thanks already!

Goal 1. I have been suffering from depression because i've been stuck at home for 2 years. i want to give my alevels privately by oct/nov next year but these days i feel so miserable that all i do is watch seasons and not study when i really need to. studying by yourself means no checks and balances so i really need someone to help me with it, it would be great if that someone knows about Psychology, Sociology and Business studies; the subjects that i am appearing in.

Goal 2. I have been fat a few years back. i started gym a year ago (kickboxing/MMA) and lost a lot of weight and my whole body is perfect but theres this belly fat that i can't seem to get rid of. I have never been on a diet but this time around, i had this picture of me put on facebook which really felt embarassing and now i want to do anything i can to get a flat tummy. Dieting and kickboxing and i need help and checks with that routine.

Goal 3. My stamina really sucks because of smoking and because of that i can't last 3 rounds in sparring or boxing. I need help with a routine that would help build my stamina, workouts for that, running help and to lower my smoking rate.

Goal 4. Personal care. I dont have a routine in which i take care of my self because of the misery hanging over all the time. I need help with that too. Like a beauty routine or something like that because no matter what i say or think, looking good is important and i have no clue about make up and skin care and things like that.

Goal 5. I need to build a good relationship with both my parents and simply i would need help and advice for that.

@NoCranberryJuice you have very ambitious but clearly defined goals. What strikes me is that each of these goals may take a lot of work. My experience working on multiple goals is it is usually more successful with a sharp focus on the biggest challenge.

Also each of these goals are inter-related, so improving one could improve the other. The other thing I notice is that for goal number 1 coping with depression, there is a strong likelihood that professional help will be needed such as med therapy and or talk therapy. Certainly 7cups can be a help and support but this is a challenge that may take a determination on your part to go out of your comfort zone.

Smoking and stamina are related so going to a diminishing of smoking and creating a routine with a set amount of cigarettes a day can help improve your health and reduce physical dependence on nicotine. Figure out how much you smoke now and start reducing the number regularly until you start to notice breathing and stamina increase.

Find common ground with your parents. One mistake some people make is to try to explain all the challenges in your life. First establish common ground and trust and then you already have the basis for a more peaceable relationship.

Feel free to message me if questions.

My goal is to actually go and get therapy and to start making progress with my anxiety and depression. I'm going to make an appointment in January. I want to be accepting of who I am and see the humour in things rather than getting anxious about them. Eventually I also want to be a web developer/entrepreneur, I'm sort of on track to do this.

My goal is to lose the extra weight I have. My thyroid issue makes it extremely hard because my metabolism is very slow plus I get random cravings. This is something I've wanted to do for a long time but I really need help.

I want to exercise for at least 45 minutes a day, three times a week in order to lose 18lbs.. Would love to reach my target weight within 3 month..

hi @sweetDay98 - I am kind of an exercise and diet obsessed person so maybe I could share some.

I find 5-6 days a week of exercise is much more vigorous than 3. Maybe you could do exercise one day and relaxing and stretching yoga the next. Just an idea but wanted to give you an option.

Send me a message if want to chat more.

One goal that I have always had is to record my dreams every single day for an entire year. Since the new year is fastly approaching, I cannot think of a better time to try and achieve this goal. It's a more specific version of my goal of writing something every day for an entire year, but since I'm still in school, simply achieving that goal is relatively simple. I want the writing I do daily to mean something and to be an activity I'm not forced to do because it is school work.

If you decide to help me with this goal, it would really mean a lot.

Hi @NavySodium - I have found mindfulness practice (connecting to breath) can help bring back dream images that seem to be lost when first awakening.

Best first step seems to be keeping notebook, pen and reading light handy that can be switched on without jumping out of bed. Then if you do wake up in the middle of the night, simply write down everything you remember. Be sure to put a date and time in front of it before you go to sleep so you do not have to think or after you are done.

If you want to chat more about achieving your goal send me a message

@soulsings Thanks! I'll definitely keep this in mind. I'm thinking of getting some sort of journal to keep by my bed for this purpose. :) Thanks!

Oh yes!, I would like to have some support in my progress to achieve my goals. Because i have never gotten anywhere close to it.

1- I want to learn to love myself

I'm already in my 30s. One of the main reasons why i'm so miserable all the time is because i never really knew how to care for myself. Then i realize how can i ever be happy if i don't love myself? My lonely life is also the cause of my misery.

2- I would love to get a job and stick with it

I have been through so many unpleasent experiences when it comes to work. I can never work at 1 place for more than a few months which is really stressing me out. I feel so frustrating because the work that i do is simple and low paying job but i can't even seem to do it well. And since i have very low self-esteem, i hardly get along with my workmates, i never manage to make any friends and but i always get bullied instead. I feel so depress sometimes because i just don't know how to get it right.

3- I need to build my life ALL OVER AGAIN

I'm just struggling to build back my spirit because i have been through years of pain/illness. I lost almost everything i had before.I lost my job, the 1 person i thought cared about me left me. I also lost the only friend that i had. I have a family but nobody cares about anybody in my family so it doesn't mean anything. I'm really lost and depress, i'm afraid of living alone having nobody that i can rely on as it is. I feel broken inside and don't know how to pull myself together again but keep crashing down again and again.

Sorry if it sounds too much. But it would really help to have somebody to help me out on this mess. Thanx a lot in advance yes

First thing you must know is that you are worth it! You deserve happiness and it is out there. "most folks are as happy as they make their minds up to be" (Lincoln) it may seem hard at first but make up your mind to be happy. Start a gratitude journal of things during your day, and always find at least 3. In the morning jot down something you're looking forward to, no matter how small.
