Daily Meditations by Marcus Aurelius - #5 - Not Good, Nor Bad
"There is no evil in things changing, just as there is no good in persisting in a new state."
- Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book 4:42
Ever notice how people say, 'Change is good!' when they’re trying to console themselves—or you? It's like they’re trying to convince themselves, too, because deep down, most of us are a bit wary of change. It’s human nature, right? We cling to the familiar and eye anything different with a bit of suspicion.
But here's where the Stoics come in and say, 'Hold up!' They’d tell us to drop the 'good' and 'bad' labels altogether. Change isn’t inherently good, and the status quo isn’t necessarily bad—they just are. Things happen, and it’s only our opinion that slaps on the judgment.
So, what’s the move here? Instead of fighting change or clinging to what’s comfortable, why not shift our mindset and make the most of every situation? That doesn’t mean we have to force a smile when things go sideways, but maybe, just maybe, we can find a way to roll with it. Embrace the uncertainty and let it show us something new.
(This idea was sparked by a piece from Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday)

Such a thought provoking post ❤️ I agree! Instead of clinging on to something which is bound to the rules of this world, i.e., change we need to focus on the things we can cherish as long as they are here with us... ☺️
I love comparing my life and the situations with the ever changing seasons.. every season is important.. without autumn, the spring would never come and we'd never see those beautiful flowers blooming!
Embracing change and focusing on the present moment always works for me:)

What a beautifully thoughtful addition! 😊 I love how you've drawn the parallel with the changing seasons—it's such a perfect analogy. Just like nature goes through its cycles, we too have our moments of growth, shedding, and blooming. And you're absolutely right—without those transitions, we'd never fully appreciate the beauty that follows.
It's a gentle reminder that change is what adds depth and color to our lives, and embracing it allows us to experience the richness of every moment. Here's to finding beauty in every phase and making the most of the journey! 🌸🌿
