The Internet

WhatNameidk June 1st

Do you really think the internet is beneficial to mental health as a whole?

 I don't

I have 1.9GB of data left and then it will be no more internet for me...

I don't own a phone so no internet on there. This is my laptop which I am still using but once the data runs out then I will have no access to the internet

I know it might be incomprehensible to most of you - but remember real life? where you never had to care or worry about comments or likes or emails or hackers or all the other endless stuff that comes online. I know there are "good" things about the internet, I just think the bad outweighs the good for me personally

A lot of you are probably not old enough to even remember a time when everyone wasn't online so for you it might be a totally alien concept

I see people on their phones walking along, at the bus stop, on a fairground ride, whilst watching TV, whilst eating, whilst with their friends haha it never ends, so glued to it and I think it is really sad

No more internet for me lol

What are your thoughts on this and for you personally?

@WhatNameidk

I think those of us that can remember before internet.... see the downfalls faster and better then  the current group glued to a device.  For the ability to have information at our fingertips it comes with a huge need for critical thinking to sort and define  the loads of misleading garbage on the internet too....

it is a tool for those who would like to manipulate a conversation or opinions... it has not helped our search for knowledge or brought anyone together....... but instead isolated and confused many.

Good for you for quitting it.  i limit my use and do NOT go onto social BS apps or loads of Rhetoric that exists.

@toughTiger6481 I agree 1,000% with what you're saying. Thanks for pointing out the good side of the internet.

Great question.

I don't think the internet is inherently bad. I think it has a lot of positive potential.

But it's all too easy for people to get wrapped up in social media, internet surfing, trying to tell what's true and what's fake, and stay glued to their screens all day and all night... that's a problem and definitely not good for mental health.

Good for you for stepping away from the www.

I think if a person has a healthy balance in their life, real life activities and friends, fresh air and exercise, etc., and occasionally uses the internet, that's fine. I loved my life pre-internet and I think it's sad that kids now generally don't have that. When I was bored, I got creative. When my kids are bored, they play video games. My friends lived next door. Their friends are people they've never met in person. It's a totally different world.

Thanks for your interesting comments guys

I agree, a healthy balance is good and as one of you said, it is very easy to not have that healthy balance and get carried away online

I must admit, I am apprehensive - how will I find things out? go to the library? I get all my news and information from the internet. How disconnected will I feel?

Oh well, we shall see. I kind of want it to just run out now so I can get on with it but I also know that impatience is foolish. At one point it will run out and I will think "oh no I wish I could just have one more minute to check so and so..."

For example. I usually check the weather forecast for the day - now I will just have to guess if it will rain or not.. since it is UK then prob yes is the answer haha

 It will be weird tho

I remember. Personal human contact in the real world, reading body language, using our hands to garden and make things we can be proud of because we’re the producers, walking long distances with only our thoughts for company. Yes, I yearn for these times. I manufacture these moments artificially for myself by shutting my devices, doing these things I crave. I call them “fasts” and they can last for days and weeks. Writing longhand in a notebook is also something I forgot to mention as a forgotten pleasure, as is holding a cup of tea and just staring at the trees with no particular need to think, like or do anything at all in particular.

It’s ironic I am sharing this thought on an electronic platform, but it’s my thought for today and I resonated with your post, so yay, you get to read it if you choose!

If you’re already off on your internet-free adventure, then may the wind be always at your back and the stars point the way forward!

Love and Courage,

Rose

@WhatNameidk I think your right but only for some people. I grew up a bit differently to a lot of people, I didn't even know tvs, phones, internet computers, resisted till I was 18 years old I only learnt t use the internet a couple of years ago. I use this site as my way of communication with the outside world, to make friends, give and receive support. I am disabled and in constant pain, but when the pain becomes a bit much, then I come here to distract myself. There's a lot of others who need sites like this. But if you can enjoy a world with out all this, then good for you, I wish you well. Although will miss you! Gives you a giant tiny hug ❤

Lola,

I wish we could go on some adventures together, Lola! Sometimes I think the world of imagination is really our only refuge. It’s nice to think about.

I will share something. When I was younger, my mum used to take us to the local library. It was a trek because we didn’t have a library in our town (now there is one there). There was no limit on number of books we could take out, so my mum just said, “Take what you can carry!” So, I would take a bag, so I could stuff it with books. Then, especially if it was raining, I could huddle up in some comfy place and just read. All those worlds.

I think it was reading that made me want to write. Even now, do I like reading on the computer? Not as much, though I understand how it’s the only strand of communication and community for many. Anyway, I thought I would share that with you. I just felt like it.

The world of books. That is a big world.

I hope you are well, and I’m proud to call you a friend.

Love and Courage,

Rose

I didn't last long without internet, only 5 days
I realise I can't trust my mind, it's so ironic
I have always felt I had some kind of inner plan I could trust... And when I look back at all the things I wanted and never got, it makes me realise oh I really am clueless.. Like its just a stupid illusion and actually I am just guessing and mostly getting it all wrong
 Sad really
Maybe I will live without internet forever at some point. Right now I have it again though

@WhatNameidk Depends on what you use it for. If you're looking at bad things it can corrupt you thoroughly. If your using just to learn intensively it can make you into a genius. It all depends.

RainbowRosie June 12th

@WhatNameidk

I don’t think it’s all bad. It’s like generic says, it really depends on what you use it for. Being older I didn’t grow up with it but now it’s here I’d certainly find things much harder, without it. I’m forever using google for this and that. I’d say all in moderation…and all is good! 😀🌹

cafedaydreams June 16th

I think when it comes to the internet the phrase "everything in moderation" really hits it. I think of the internet as a tool. The tool itself isn't bad, it's all in how people use it.
