breaking free from negative thoughts

How do you break free from negative thoughts I know it is sometimes hard to do but in order for us to have a peaceful and calm time it is something that needs to be done.
Negative thought can interfere with out daily life, interfere with our sleeping and have a toll on us physically and mentally. There are steps we may take to help us not continue on with these negative thoughts.
How are some ways you handle getting rid of negative thoughts?
