PL 101: Introduce Yourself! (Discussion 1)

GlenM June 29th, 2020

Welcome to our first course in the Leadership Development Program! I am very excited to get this going. This has been something we've wanted to do for the last several months and at long last it is here. Please find the course description below. Please also introduce yourself and let us (if comfortable) where you are from and a recent book or movie you have enjoyed. I'll get us started!

Course Description: You have personal gifts and strengths that can help you in life and also help other people. Identifying, amplifying, and deliberately building those strengths enables you to have a better personal life, professional life, and also enables you to more effectively serve others in our community. People sometimes make the mistake of focusing too much on their weaknesses. This can help, but deliberately building your strengths will get you much further in life and in your career. This course provides links to personality testing (MBTI, Big 5) where you can learn to identify your personality style and strengths. It helps you understand how to match your strengths to roles in the 7 Cups community and enables you to find a career path that will be fulfilling. Join other new leaders in individual and group learning exercises.

Please note: In order to successfully complete the LDP, you must respond to all discussion posts. Your comment/response should answer the questions/shows that you completed the given activity (if any). Read the post carefully and follow the instructions given. Save your responses to a document that you can later refer to. You will need to copy/paste your response in the course evaluation form at the end of each course to show that you have done the work and to refresh your memory.

After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.

This post is brought to you by the Leadership Development Program Team, find out more information about the program here.

Hello Glen & Everyone!

I'm Warrior, from India. I'm currently reading a book called, "Ikigai". Its quite famous and very useful for personal development, health and happiness. One movie that I watched last week (and several more times earlier), is "Queen" (an Indian movie) and it gives me so much courage and inspiration every single time! If you can find it with subtitles, I recommend it to everyone out here!!

So glad to be part of 7cups! It changed my life πŸ™‚

Looking forward to a wonderful LDP journey!

Namaste πŸ™

As for Queen, I shall add it to my (never-ending) list of movies to watch. It sounds great by your reaction to it! I'm glad you're here on Cups as well, and I hope this course does you well! xx

Hello, I am Himanshu. I live in New Delhi, India. I joined 7 Cups in June 2018. It's
been more than 2 years since I joined 7 Cups. I have learnt a lot from volunteering as
an Active Listener. The book that I have enjoyed a lot is "The Inimitable Jeeves" by
P.G. Wodehouse. I really loved the comic sense of the author. It's brilliantly written!

Hi I am uniqueDaisy from England.smiley

My favorite film is: Patch Adams with Robbie Williams because it challenges people to think differently. In other words look beyond what you see happening in everyday life, in school, the work place, centres of worship etc and think how things could be done differently for the enhance the experience for all.

At the start of the film Patch is admitted as a patient into a psychiatric hospital. Realizing that the doctors had little to offer him and that he could help patients by thinking differently he discharged himself and went to train as a medical doctor. Not long into his training he discovered that seeing things differently got him in lots of trouble. The medical system was against him, for example training had to be completed in a set way, no talking to to patients until they entered their third year of medical school and even then it was by using the protocol. The kidney in bed 8. Patch set out to learn as much as he could from the patients as he could about medical conditions by dressing as a clown and using humour, which as you can imagine got him into lots of trouble.

Patch also wrote a book Gesundheit! which is about his life and trying to establish a hospital. Though some posts on the internet say that Patch Adams is not a real person he can be contacted, though it is via the post. He responds to all his post by long hand. Most importantly Patch says if you need a friend you can write to him and he will respond.

I think the film and book are a useful learning experience for 7 cups listeners because it:

Helps you realize that you can choose to think differently about the world you are in and make a difference into peoples lives. Establishments, such as health care facilities do not have to continue in the way they are at present.

Seeing how Patch learnt developed his listening and communication skills helps you also see how your could also further develop your own, which in tern not only benefits yourself but the wider 7 cups community.

My book choice would be: Atomic Habits: An Easy and Proven Way to Build Good Habits and Break Bad Ones by James Clear. I personally have found it very useful in changing long standing habits. I think it useful for listeners on 7 cups to read because it may either help them personally and/or their members. It can be life changing.

@uniqueDaisy

Hey, Daisy! I can tell you have put a lot of thought into this, which I love! It's so good to hear from people about their perspectives and thoughts. Keep warm during your England winter! I love your summary for that film- I really must watch it. It sounds like something I'd highly enjoy (if only it was on Netflix Australia!) I like how the film challenges the notion of "what is done now is the only way things can be done". Funny you mention that, because I've applied for a job that is exactly that- the first few in the country are doing what the place will be doing.

As for Atomic Habits, I'm reading it on and off right now. Everyone has said it's life-changing, do you agree? How has it changed your life? I'm really interested in your response if you want to reply! No pressure though of course.

Ultimately, I hope you enjoy the LDP and take some more things out of it! xx

@SophieWX

Hey, Sophie! How is the book going? I've never heard of it before- it sounds like it's a fiction?

2 replies
SophieWX September 17th, 2020

@rebecca947

It's more of a historical fiction, actually. It's by a Russian author who won the Nobel prize for literature in the 60s, after he wrote this book. The book itself is well worth the read, I feel, the language is very pretty since its author also occasionally writes poetry. You should give it a try!
