Hello everyone,
Welcome back to the second discussion of the course!
John C Maxwell defines leadership as, a leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.
Effective Leadership starts with utilizing skills to guide your team. There are different research and studies that show that to be a good leader, one would require a blend of some key skills like communication, problem-solving, decision making, conflict resolution, clear vision, integrity, emotional intelligence, listening, empathy, adaptability, resilience, etc.
Behavioral Theories believe that people can become leaders through the process of teaching, learning, and observation. Leadership is a set of skills that can be learned by training, perception, practice, and experience over time. Leadership learning is a lifetime activity.
Everyone holds his fortune in his own hands, like a sculptor the raw material he will fashion into a figure. But it is the same with that type of artistic activity as with all others: we are merely born with the capability to do it. The skill to mold the material into what we want must be learned and attentively cultivated. -- J.W.V. Goethe
The same is true with leadership. You may or may not have all the required ingredients of becoming an effective leader. And, thats totally okay. You can acquire them by learning. Taking small steps every day. That is how one learns, practices, and masters skills.
Next step, below in the comments of this discussion, share
1. Are leaders born or made?
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
4. Please reply to 3 of your peers in the thread!
After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.

Next step, below in the comments of this discussion, share
1. Are leaders born or made?
MADE
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
Managing an issue at hand, walking through solutions, and letting all ideas in not just a few or what “i think is a good idea” as others may feel the other ideas are good just as well
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern? First i will speak to each individually to find out if the communication is off, if they are not adding up the story, or they feel differently.. I Will have to resolve that it is communication and then i will help both work together to solve the problem by communicating more effectively and listening to ones story intently before commenting
@Heather225
1. Are leaders born or made?
I think, there are people that have natural qualities that help them to become a leader, but in the end, you have to work on yourself and your skills to become a good leader.
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
I need to work on my conflict solving, on my delegation and on my staying-relaxed skill. :)
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
I would let everyone share what their concerns and wishes are, then ask them how they'd want to resolve the issue and if there's no agreement, I'll decide as good as possible.
@audienta
I like how you say that despite having natural qualities you still need to work on yourself and your skills to become one😄
@Heather225
Leaders are grown/made. Although some people may already have the required ingredients of becoming an effective leader, others may not and will have to acquire them through learning. Even those who may already have the skills have room to develop and grow as a leader, and this makes an effective leader.
Decision making – Welp, not sure much would ever get done if it wasn’t for team helping with this. I’ve been taught before that although you ask for input from your team, you make the final decision and tell everyone the idea you are using. I definitely need to work on this!
Patience – Patience with myself and with others. I know that I lose patience easily, and I know that is one of my weaknesses. I aim to talk myself through each time I feel myself losing patience, and that most things, are not time critical.
Keep opinions to myself! – Sometimes, even when I see something going not quite right, I need to keep my mouth shut. Maybe give them a hint. But if they aren’t willing to listen, don’t push it. They’ll learn from where things don’t go quite right, rather than me going blue in the face trying to tell them!
@SparklingSeashells
Forgot the last point!
If there is conflict within my team, I would try to understand what the conflict was about, listen to each person in turn. I would emphasise the importance of working together. And finally come to the best agreement possible to make sure all parties are satisfied with the outcome.
@SparklingSeashells
I can relate to the " keeping it to myself" haha
I like your approach on how you'd resolve the conflict 😄
1. Are leaders born or made? they are made
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon? the first thing that comes to mind is making decisions
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern? I would have each person get in a group and each person gets a task to do and i would give them guidance just like a teacher would give a student guidance.
@Heather225
1. Are leaders born or made?
I would say, both are true. Some people are born with leadership qualities and for them things come automatically. However, leadership is also something to learn and to put them in practice. Most of the time Leaders are made mainly through experience.
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
1. Patience 2. to be more social human 3. to get involved in community activities here in 7 cups.
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
First I will be calling them, listening out to them, same time analysing their views. Understanding why they have to come to that particular decision. If possible to identify the common issue on both sides and working on it . Or to try maximum to put in both sides differences as a common point to resolve this very issue. Once we have a solution, then I make them understand how a team work can really help in growing the organisation as well as our self.
1. Leaders are made because leadership skills can be learned
2. -Time management
- conflict resolution
- communication skills
3. I will encourage them to calmly discuss instead of arguing. I will also remind them that every opinion is valid but we just need to try to collaborate.
@Heather225
1. Are leaders born or made?
Leader are made. You don't have to b born one to become one.
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
Communication: I often just do things on my own and just forget to tell my process to my peers.
Aggressiveness: I should be more aggressive. Not in a mean way, but often I tend to let people just walk over me.
Say no: I should say no more. always say ' yes' to avoid the other person being angry with me or disappointed in me.
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
I'd talk to everyone first and ask their opinion. After that I would sit with them and we discuss what we can do to resolve the situation.
*claps about saying no*
@Ninziesss
I sometimes struggle with saying no too! It can be difficult but it is great you have identified this area to improve. Wishing you all the best luck on your journey 😄 In relation to your final question I agree with the taking turns to listen and discuss ❤️
@Ninziesss
Yes, you shouldn't let anyone take advantage of you <3
@Ninziesss I agree with the skills, we all need to work on them sometimes. Thank you for sharing it with us!
1. Are leaders born or made?
Although some people are more natural leaders than others, there are still ways for everyone to improve and continue growing in their leadership.
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
I need to be more intentional about breaks instead of allowing burnout. Team building is difficult for me. And time management!!
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
I would start by empathizing with and validating everyone's experiences. We would then work together to make a list of all team responsibilities and assign them out. We could recruit more team members if necessary.
@WarmLightX
You made a very good point about burnout and self-care. I think I also need to look into that for myself. Empathising and validating is a point I missed thank you for the reminder 💗
@Heather225
1) I believe that leaders are made. Leaders are forever growing, developing, and learning. People can have natural leadership skills, but it is how they choose to use them.
2) 3 things I need to work on include: time management, conflict resolution and handling feedback.
3) I would approach the situation by listening to each person individually so that their idea can be shared and listened to fully and not overlooked. I would encourage an open conversation and encourage everyone to incorporate everyone’s ideas to create one where everyone feels included and involved.
@CalmWaves3939
I have a hard time accepting feedback as well — glad to see that I am not the only one!
@CalmWaves3939
Well said!
@CalmWaves3939
Including everyone during conflict is a great decision ! I liked your answer
@CalmWaves3939 your points are spot on- agreed!
@Heather225
Course two:
Q: Are leaders born or made?
A: leaders are definitely made, the way the leadership work is learned and it comes with big practice, some people have it naturally but it does need a lot of practice to be a good and strong leader
Q: Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
A: I want to work on multiple skills of mine but the three skills that I need to work on are: 1: communication, 2: making important decisions and 3: I’m pretty good at problem-solving but I want to work more on this one.
Q: Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
A: I would talk to everyone on the team and I would ask everyone why their thoughts are on this but I will also ask them to name strengths about the other team members on the team.
I would take everyone’s comment in consideration and from there I will handle what is best for the situation and team.

@kenzolena
I agree — great points!
@kenzolena
I agree with your view
@kenzolena
Communications and making good decisions are really important skills to develop. I hope you get to better them :)
@kenzolena Taking everyone into consideration is what a true leader would do and I appreciate you for thinking to do that. Thank you for sharing it with us!
