Hello everyone,

Welcome back to the second discussion of the course!

John C Maxwell defines leadership as, a leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.

Effective Leadership starts with utilizing skills to guide your team. There are different research and studies that show that to be a good leader, one would require a blend of some key skills like communication, problem-solving, decision making, conflict resolution, clear vision, integrity, emotional intelligence, listening, empathy, adaptability, resilience, etc.

Behavioral Theories believe that people can become leaders through the process of teaching, learning, and observation. Leadership is a set of skills that can be learned by training, perception, practice, and experience over time. Leadership learning is a lifetime activity.

Everyone holds his fortune in his own hands, like a sculptor the raw material he will fashion into a figure. But it is the same with that type of artistic activity as with all others: we are merely born with the capability to do it. The skill to mold the material into what we want must be learned and attentively cultivated. -- J.W.V. Goethe

The same is true with leadership. You may or may not have all the required ingredients of becoming an effective leader. And, thats totally okay. You can acquire them by learning. Taking small steps every day. That is how one learns, practices, and masters skills.

Next step, below in the comments of this discussion, share
1. Are leaders born or made?
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
4. Please reply to 3 of your peers in the thread!

After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.

@Heather225

I think leaders are definitely made because we all need Observation for that

I think I really need to work on my decision making skills , boundaries and selfcare

I would listen to both sides and ask them to be as transparent as possible about their intentions then set common ground for them so that help them to become more stronger

1. Are leaders born or made?

Leading is not something that you either can or you can’t. That's just not true, it's a myth. You don't just wake up and have amazing communication skills and be able to de-escalate conflicts and show everyone amazing empathy without messing up a million times. You have to work. Practice is key. Sometimes the leaders that start out the worst make the best ones in the end because they work the hardest. If you put in the work and are determined and you are motivated to practice your skills and are willing to grow and learn, then you can most definitely become so much higher than you thought you could.

2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?

Overcoming self-doubt: I often doubt myself and am not very confident in myself and my abilities. Second-guessing choices and where I am making the right or wrong choices.

Time Management: it is important to be able to manage your time, making sure that tasks are getting done so that you are a reliable person and that your team is efficient. Sometimes I procrastinate or redo things multiple times. So making sure my time is meaningful is important too.

Giving and receiving feedback: as a leader, it is important to be able to work on both giving and receiving. We must give feedback as a conversation to be able to grow and improve the team, even tho I never want to upset or hurt anyone or feel that their work is not valued and appreciated and reconized. Also be able to be a role model to receive feedback too because it's a team, not a dictatorship.

3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?

I would first speak to people individually where it is a safe and confidential place to hear them out and gain insight, ask questions, gain insight into the problem and see what it's all about. I would then call everyone together and have a discussion so that people could hear each other's points of view too. I would use active listening skills, encourage others to share, be respectful to each other, ask for everyone's perspectives on the situation, and start to look for solutions. Then making up a plan. No matter what the solution may be, finding new roles for people, redistributing work, making up a timeline, or implementing new processes, work to have everyone being able to agree and commit and hold accountable for the new plan. Then follow up with people to make sure things are going smoothly and that anyone that was not the happiest with a check-in with so problems don't recur.

1. Are leaders born or made?

It is a bit both some people have natural instict to be leader easier but you can become a leader by working hard on it.

2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?

not good at small talk, using body language and time managment.

3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?

I give responsibility as how skilled, free and determined on the project. I will try to look at each ones strenght and weakness. I can offer to give more responsibility more to other people other projects. ı can also assign to same responsibility two people and see who did better job.

1-Are leaders born or made?

Certainly made, where leadership learns to practice the skills it possesses and develops them to become a distinguished leader and leads a group that helps them develop and enhance internal skills, as people become leaders through teaching, learning and observation since learning to lead is a lifelong activity.

2- Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?

1- Making decisions.

2- Continuous communication.

3- Practice and experience.

This does not mean that I do not have these skills, rather they do, of course, but I am working on developing them continuously and clearly.

3-Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader , how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?

I can solve the issue by dividing the tasks between them and giving each member the task that matches his skills that I know from working with him! Certainly, they are different in responsibilities, skills and tasks that they perform. Therefore, I listen to everyone and sympathize with them, and through my ability to be flexible, I can resolve conflicts and take the appropriate decision that serves all parties.

1. Are leaders born or made?

I would say that leaders are definitely made, however, a lot of individuals are naturally born leaders. Therefore, I would say that it does depend on the situation!

2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?

Not thinking about what I am going to say next instead of listening to an individual speak.

Making sure to think before speaking.

Becoming more adaptable in situations.

3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?

Firstly, I think it’s important for me to not take sides when it comes to the two team members. Secondly, I will make sure to listen to both sides and make sure that both individuals feel heard. I will then speak with both individuals to come up with a solution that benefits all parties.

1. Are leaders born or made?

  • I believe leaders can be made, however, you have to be willing to put in the work.

2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?

  • 3 skills that I need to work upon are: communicating with team members, listening to team members and allowing team members the space to grow.

3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?

  • I would approach the situation by speaking with the team members and getting them to share their feelings over the situation and then I would ask them what they think their responsibilities should be.

I am a born leader; I have always been in a leader role since I was a little kid. The three skills that I need to work on my communication as you can always improve your communication skills. The next one is my team building skills as you can always improve these skills also. Team building is very important. The last skill I feel like I need to work on is conflict resolution the reason why is that conflict does happen and there are always different ways to deal with conflict and learning new ways to deal with it is important. As a leader I would talk to my team and get all of their strengths and divide the work up like that.

1. Are leaders born or made? I feel like a lot of leaders are being born, but that doesn't mean someone can't become one! Most leaders were made through the path they chose!
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon? Be able to communicate with team members, motivate the team and encourage everyone to complete tasks on time.
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
. When a problem or disagreement arises I try to stay calm and try to find a solution step-by-step. If someone lets a disagreement or a problem fester, there is a high risk of the problem escalating and even affecting the whole team. So what I did was to let both sides explain their thoughts and the benefits they saw in their own method. Then I helped them to brainstorm different ways in which both arguments could become a combined solution. I tried to make the two members work together and see each other’s perspectives. I also made sure to remind them that we are all working toward the same goal and should collaborate in the best way possible.
