Hello everyone,

Welcome back to the second discussion of the course!

John C Maxwell defines leadership as, a leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.

Effective Leadership starts with utilizing skills to guide your team. There are different research and studies that show that to be a good leader, one would require a blend of some key skills like communication, problem-solving, decision making, conflict resolution, clear vision, integrity, emotional intelligence, listening, empathy, adaptability, resilience, etc.

Behavioral Theories believe that people can become leaders through the process of teaching, learning, and observation. Leadership is a set of skills that can be learned by training, perception, practice, and experience over time. Leadership learning is a lifetime activity.

Everyone holds his fortune in his own hands, like a sculptor the raw material he will fashion into a figure. But it is the same with that type of artistic activity as with all others: we are merely born with the capability to do it. The skill to mold the material into what we want must be learned and attentively cultivated. -- J.W.V. Goethe

The same is true with leadership. You may or may not have all the required ingredients of becoming an effective leader. And, thats totally okay. You can acquire them by learning. Taking small steps every day. That is how one learns, practices, and masters skills.

Next step, below in the comments of this discussion, share
1. Are leaders born or made?
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
4. Please reply to 3 of your peers in the thread!

After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.

1. Are leaders born or made?
Leaders are made. A person can use the skills they already have as their strengths and then learn other skills that are needed.
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
Assertiveness
Decisiveness
Patience
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
Have everyone step back a bit and pause for a bit. Then have each person tell me their concern as we discuss in an open chat. Laying out ground rules first that each person can have 5 uninterrupted minutes to explain their frustration. Then we will come up with a plan to meet in the middle and work on ways to fix the issue for the future.

1. Are leaders born or made?

I think you can be born with some characteristics that can be helpful to become a leader, but leaders are definitely made and everybody can be one, overall because we need diversity since there are lots of different types of leaders. I used to think I would never be a good leader until I start trying myself out and I learned from my mistakes until I became more effective.

2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?

1- I should improve my communication skills. Sometimes I am just afraid of giving feedback because I know that not everybody reacts equally to it. Although, I learned that if you do it well people can be more receptive.
2- I would like to be more confident in myself. Sometimes I get scared to trust my gut feelings, but it is important for me to trust myself and be confident in what I am doing.
3- I should improve my time management skills. It is important to be committed to things in order to be successful. In other words, I like being able to be consistent in everything that I do.

3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?

I will, first of all, meet with them and make sure that I am fully aware of the situation and get to know what is happening. Then, I would like to ask them what they would think helpful solutions could be and also how could I help them improve the issue. I would make sure that everybody is doing okay and they are not overworking.

First of all, I love this quote from John, I have one I also would like to share.
Leadership is not about a title or a designation. It's about impact, influence, and inspiration.
Impact involves getting results, influence is about spreading the passion you have for your work, and you have to inspire teammates and customers.
To become a great leader, first, become a great person.

By Robin Sharma

Are leaders born or made?
I believe leaders are born, we are all born with it to become leaders. It is our right to be a great leader! Doesn't have to be in a workplace/position it can be a leader in life to be an amazing humanitarian.
Imagine you are a project leader and there is a conflicting among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
I would ask them both to step into my office to discuss this matter privately. I would hear both sides of the story and help them come to an agreement. I would also express about us working together as a team and what that means with helping each other and supporting one another.
If its more than two people then hold a team meeting, still expressing the above, and ask for input.

I would also listen to both sides @explore1000. I feel it is important to hear/see all sides before making a call. During the time where I'd be listening though I'd keep a neutral stance so I don't upset anyone and all feel supported. If a team can't get along and support each other the team will fail which is why listening is sometimes the best way to approach a situation.

I agree! It is important to stay calm under pressure, it helps us think straight and resolve the problem!

1. Are leaders born or made?

Leaders are made. It takes some practice to become a leader and work through some setbacks that may prevent you from being a good leader.

2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?

I need to work on communication, so I can talk to people and come up with a solution to be more efficient. I need to work on being less hard on myself because that is not productive and can in fact, prevent the best work from being done. I also need to work on decision making because I get scared that someone will not like my decision but I have to remember that I just have to make the best decision for everyone overall.

3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?

I will make sure that they communicate with each other effectively and talk about their strengths and weaknesses with each other. They will decide what works best for them based on that discussion.

@Brinaa101 I also have a hard time making decisions! I love being friends with everyone but at some point I would have to make calls if I felt it was needed. I agree that when a decision is made it should be for the greater good and not just one person.

August 8th, 2021

@Brinaa101
It is normal to get scared when making a decision and that's okay if people don't like you decision: as you said that decision was taken after considering whats good for everyone! Best of luck!

unique73 August 8th, 2021

@Brinaa101 I hear you, it is hard not to be hard on yourself when things don't work as they're supposed to be, but we can remind ourselves and definitely work on it!

1. Are leaders born or made? I believe that leaders are made. We are all born with different genes and depending upon if it is a dominant or recessive gene we are more or less likely to be a leader but we still have that gene no matter what. Our life experiences and where we want to go in life effects on if/how we progress into a leadership role.
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon? My biggest flaw is that I am often too shy. I struggle to get a conversation going and keeping it going. Another skill I need to work on is communication. As a leader it is important to make sure things are getting done but also that they are at a challenging but achievable level. A 3rd skill I need to work on is being assertive. This kind of goes along with how I am shy but I am someone who likes to get along with everyone. There is nothing wrong with that but at some point when things aren't getting done or aren't done how they should be that is when as a leader I need to step up and say ok this is what needs to be done and how it needs to be done. It's vital to make a firm stand and show them that while interacting is good it is important to remain on task at the same time.
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern? I would first listen to each members sides of things objectively. I would remain neutral to ensure all feel supported. Then, I'd sit down and go over what all the responsibilties are and who is in charge of what based upon their position. If there is multiple with same position I'd first attempt to see who is either comfortable with doing one task over another, OR by making it a responsibility for person 'A' week one and then week 2 it would be person 'B' responsibility and so on.

I loved how you said that tasks should be challenging at a achievable level! It is important to learn that as a leader but often times people don't notice that part and it potentially results in the failure of that task/project!

Are leaders born or made?
-
Leaders are made. To become a leader one need to work hard and gradually improve as a leader and an individual person.

Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
-
Communication: I am an introvert so it is hard for me to talk and/or discuss with new people.
- Adaptability: After a lot of denial I finally came to a conclusion that I tend to not adapt in my surrounding; I fing it hard to work out of my comfort zone and I'd really like to improve.
- Decision-making: I need to learn that as a leader my decision will not please every team member.

Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
-
Communication is the key. Arrange a meeting and talk about our strengths and weakness. Then mutually agree to take a task/responsibilty.

1. Are leaders born or made?
~ Leaders are made, it is a process through learning, teaching, analyzing and improving. Leaders are developed by focusing on the skills that help to enhance leadership.

2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
~ Communication, organization skills, conflict resolution.

3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
~ I will understand and analyze the situation and all aspects of the problem before moving ahead, then I will talk with all the members individually to know their views and insights and then discuss and work with the team members in the team meeting to tackle the problem and divide responsibilities accordingly.

@Heather225

1.) Are leaders born or made?
Although qualities like general assertiveness and active command are naturally present, per se "born with it". However, to be a leader, you also require good communication skills, conflict resolving skills, empathy, strength, and a good mindset driven by a goal. These skills are only learnt, smoothed, and refined over time.

2.) Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
a) I believe one can never be the best communicator. There are always things to learn.
b) conflict resolving skills
c) strength. i must remember not to say yes just to please another person.

3.) Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the conflict?

As a leader, I must listen to all the team members carefully. Identify the root cause, why do the team members feel as if they aren't getting enough control, how can i assign them a few tasks to make them feel in control in a sense?

1. Are leaders born or made?
Nothing is purely innate or environmental, they're a result of epigenetics. In terms of it being fixed or changeable, I think every individual has the capacity to grow to become a leader so it's a changeable trait. Something within the circle of influence.
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
In certain situations, I find it difficult to ascertain what is a leader appropriate behaviour, I feel like I might be misinterpreted if I say certain things a certain way. This is a barrier to decision making, I want to work on that by observing leadership norms.
Conflict resolution also I could improve upon. Lastly, delegating work according to my team member's skillsets.
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
I will listen to the issue, make every attempt to understand it from everyone's perspective, and propose ideas that will be implemented based on a majority vote.
